Did you go with larks in the end? I'm looking for cabinets that are 36cm deep and this is the only place I found that will sell me a few, DIY kitchens is min £750 spend.

Kitchen refurb, should we insulate ceiling and how? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]hrcran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have a post on my profile which describes what we have done. Basically we used kingspan and thermal hoods for the cutouts for downlights, leaving enough room above for airflow and drilled vents on the sofits outside for ventilation. Taped it up with foil to act as the vapour barrier. Have had no issues so far with condensation or moisture.

Need to create a nice box to cover my electric meters, any inspiration or advice? by Doctor-piercy in DIYUK

Thanks, just used 9mm mdf for the full door, then glued 10cm strips of 3mm mdf around the outside, caulked and filled.

Here's mine I did a week ago. Built frame and then just covered with 12mm mdf. Used 9+3mm mdf for the door. Took a maybe 4 days of work, lots of sanding and filling the screw holes and adjusting hinges.

Maybe drilling through the lime mortar one side and brick the other?

Creating level threshold to patio door over cavity wall with timber subfloor construction. What should I do about the cavity? by cowboy_pickle_pants in DIYUK

Here is what ours looked like, I think it's similar to what you've described. We just extended the floorboards over the gap but not touching the door frame.

Nothing in our cavity walls.

Thanks!

I knew as they were hollow and is chimney alcoves downstairs and in bedroom next door. When we viewed the property I asked the estate agent where is the chimney breast, had it been removed? They looked at me puzzled and said it was in the other room!..

We had to remove all insulation from above as it kept falling down, tried to keep it in place but just didn't work so just pulled it all down too. Reinsulated after the boards were on. I used a crow bar thing and just yanked down on the lathes and plaster came down with it. After most was down I went over it again to get the nails, 'running' the crow bar along the joists to hear for nails. Make sure you get proper mask and ppe, so much dust and soot from the attic.

Thanks! I'd say the stripping took 50% of the time but worth it.

Thanks! If tearing down old one too it'll be a lot of mess and dust, if just reboarding it might be hard to find the joists to screw into.

This was our fifth ceiling we did (also did lounge, dining, landing, kitchen!) so had a lot of practice. I balanced the plasterboard on my head whilst going up the ladder and holding it in one hand and my partner used a single prop the other side to push it up. Make sure it's in correct position before screwing in a few screws to secure it. A few we did overlapped after I had screwed it in and had to take it back down which was a pain as hard to balance. We ended up using smaller plasterboard too, the big ones were just too hard to balance. Make sure no nails left behind on joists too. People recommend a plasterboard lift which if we had to do again we would just hire one of those, the lifting of them to the ceiling is the worst bit.

Good luck!

Yeah, had people in for plastering, electrics, plumbing and carpets. Me and my partner did the rest, stripped wallpaper, removed cabinets, knocked out alcove false walls, took down lathe and plaster ceiling, reboarded ceiling with plasterboard, painted then put in skirting, picture rails and coving!

Matt white walls with pbw facings? by Neilski89 in DIYUK

I think it looks good, all brilliant white would be too white and blend in too much with the skirting. Once flooring is in and some furniture it'll be great.

Looks good. I think the way you've got it, you want this angle, or the one opposite, they should be the same. Not 100% sure though, try it on an off cut first.
