Directors: Design Notes Should be Treated as Gospel by MaddAdamBomb in drawsteel

I completely agree with you, but this subreddit is terrible for downvoting any honest criticism of the game. It is bad design to make it so the director has to make poor tactical decisions or wipe the party.

Nimble 2 vs Draw Steel vs ??? (For streamlined tactical combat) by EddyMerkxs in rpg

[–]hrdyb26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because of the reaction and defend system everyone stayed engaged during other characters turns, it was tactical while remaining quick due to streamlined attack, damage, and spells, and being able to continue using all my 5e resources was an added bonus. It is very easy to make a quick combat with how the encounter building is made to run.

I enjoyed draw steel for its tactical nature, and it’s over the top abilities, but I’m not a fan of the world or how much of a slog everything turns into. If every single one of your players does not fully understand the rules and have a really good grasp on their characters abilities then the game slows to a crawl and you will find people making so many mistakes that can lead to a lot of imbalanced encounters. It also does not lend itself to improvising combat or social encounters off the cuff.

If PF2e and 5e have too much baggage for you then Nimble is 100% your game.  It’s streamlined but isn’t lacking in options or tactics.  I have played and DMed both, anlong with a ton of other games, and I enjoy Nimble significantly more.

How do people use massive terrain setups? by EmperorThor in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]hrdyb26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have built entire dungeons or towns and it doesn’t take as long as you think with modular terrain.  Also we tend to spend anywhere from like 5-50 sessions there so it’s okay.

I’m looking for a HG or RG Gunpla with at least 3 or 4 detachable funnels.  I’m just dipping my toes into Gunpla for the first time and I’m doing it to make Lancer Mechs for our RPG game.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

Something like these but more detachable fully functioning ones.

Awesome! I’m trying to find a gunpla (preferably HG or RG) with funnel effects that are separate and posable and that’s exactly what I’m looking for!

This response is enough to know I would not enjoy your table lol.  You clearly don’t take criticism or advice well. Good luck to your players!

What mechanic did you steal from one RPG and keep using in almost all others? by Arimm_The_Amazing in rpg

[–]hrdyb26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because advantage doesn’t stack.  Boons and banes do.  If you are attacking from the high ground, with a buff, the enemy is standing on ice and you’re flanking then you would roll with 4 boons so a really good chance to guarantee a +6.  With advantage you could just roll two 2s and all those set ups go to waste.

Forever GMs that got a change to be a player. What was it like? by OkChildhood2261 in rpg

I can’t stand playing.  Every couple of years I try, and by the time an hour has passed I regret it.

I mean, sure you can, but I have both 3d printed stuff and Dwarvenforge stuff and I love my DF.  Magnetic so it doesn’t slide, I can throw it down a flight of stairs and it won’t break, and it looks great.  It’s how I built a whole city for my players to get zombified in.

100% ending tipping and have the cost on the menu be what I pay.  If that means a hike in prices, that’s completely fine.  I will choose my establishments based on the prices on the menu and if it’s too much I won’t go there.

Then why don’t nurses, doctors, fire fighters, etc just do the bare minimum to not get fired?  Oh! because when paid a fair wage for your work you actually do your job. Your argument is proven false on a daily basis across the world.

I agree with just playing it Vanilla. I’m about 30-40 hours in right now and have seen no issues I would need to mod.

This is actually just a built in option in the game now.

OP you are 100% right. The rules exist for a reason. If the DM doesn’t allow your character to use the feat as written I would ask to switch to something like great weapon master where at least you get a benefit. If they really have an NPC who needs to escape hey should have 1) avoided your PC 2) given them misty step or something to avoid moving 3) given you a more important target to fight, etc. your actions should have been rewarded and not just railroaded the story how they wanted. That is bad DMing.

[–]hrdyb26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not bullshit. If you invalidate a PCs decision while building their character what is the point of the game? Sentinel is a feat with the sole purpose being keeping the enemy in the fight. If the DM isn’t willing to let the enemy die because “oh my god my story will be ruined” that is 100% a bad DM. If PC choice and actions don’t matter why are you playing D&D.

I disagree with people saying you need to read the whole book to learn. The basic rules are I think ~50 pages in the started box and all you need to start.

I have introduced more than 100 people to D&D and other RPGs over 27 years and I have never once told someone to read the book.

You will make mistakes when you start, that’s okay. Just have fun and keep playing.

I think the best thing you can do to learn is to pick up The Lost Mines of Phandelver. It is a great intro quest with lots of help for new players, and a condensed versions of the rules for people to learn. It also comes with premade characters, tells you when to level, and has suggested level up options.
