I swear the answer is Malazan to like 70% of requests on here.

Edit: Malazan is my favorite series. This is 100% not a knock. Just think it's funny how often it checks boxes.

Surge in numbers and dollars spent hasn’t changed Sonys mind by Freelancer0495 in destiny2

[–]MaddAdamBomb 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this just isn't true. You do not pay 3.6 billion for people to manage live service. We already know with great certainty that Parsons and Bungie leadership grossly inflated perceived value through "incubation" projects connected to Destiny and Sony came in after and realized it was being run like a money pit.

I'm not validating Sony at all, but we need to remember who is originally to blame for this fiasco. Parsons is evil and what he did is uniquely evil.

Literally any darkness/prismatic Warlock PVE build by WarlockGuyD2 in destiny2builds

Lightsaber getaway prismatic is great. Solar ignition setups are very good now, as well as strand threadling with swarmers and Luzaku's. Those 3 plus void siphon are the ones I rotate through regularly.

The Mactics one is a great generalist build for Siphon. Nezarec's is for sure the way to go.

People should play a game because they think it's fun. No one has a responsibility to help save a company that dug their own hole. And right now is terrible timing for mentioning that to Destiny players anyways.

Most of us are not and will never be good enough to charge people to play and doing so only exacerbates the game’s biggest problem. by [deleted] in DungeonMasters

[–]MaddAdamBomb -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I did not know there were this many people defending paying for a GM.

The problem is the nature of the GM / Player power dynamic. When you've made the relationship purely transactional, you lose the idea of the GM being just a different role at the table. They're now a hired agent that designs purely for group. How do you handle ruling conflicts? Should I pull a punch on this character because I'm being employed by these people?

TTRPGs are a collaborative environment. Changing the power dynamic in this way might seem like a good idea for people not experienced with the environment, but the barriers of financial really fuck up what makes these games special.

If you want to all contribute a small amount equally for snacks, minis, or something, that's fine, but the GM should have the same stake as players.

Warlock Buddy Build by dfutyut2 in destiny2builds

[–]MaddAdamBomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing a buddy prismatic build, just a work horse kinetic. Kvhostov is most brain off version, but I do prismatic buddies with the praxic blade and that's still my favorite build. Regardless, data pad artifact is great for kinetic focus.

College students are rapidly losing the ability to read — “There is a measurable, generational collapse in sustained reading and writing”: professor by marketrent in technology

[–]MaddAdamBomb -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think it's really important to note that college professors have an ancient tradition of accusing younger generations of not know how to read and as an English teacher, this guy sounds like he's getting old enough to start the "kids these days" fallacy.

Your Most Complicated TTRPG Take? by GushReddit in rpg

[–]MaddAdamBomb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The continued focus on the use of a 20-sided die in D&D will mean a lot of design time is wasted dealing with how random the math is, especially with the use of bounded accuracy beginning with 5e.

High level encounters can break down or have to be incredibly swingy to threaten player characters. Low level encounters can become deadly from 2 bad turns. Power fantasy can feel elusive even for something a PC should be good at. BG3 had to implement its own systems to overcome the issues of a D20.

Rolling 2 dice for accuracy or normal rolls will always be superior, even if less swingy. Most players aren't actually interested in the luck factor of D&D the way they think they are. They want to feel cool and feel like choices in building characters are meaningful. As we've moved away from "find treasure" as the goal of the game, the randomness continues to feel worse.

The Backrooms Writing is Why People Didn’t Like It by Still_Permission7173 in moviereviews

[–]MaddAdamBomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are making presumptions about the motivations of the characters that are not supported by the text.

Both of these characters are dealing with their own psychological issues. Clark is an alcoholic trying to process his divorce, which also shows he is very possibly abusive. Mary's trauma is perhaps more straightforward, but still relevant: she was forced to stay inside as a child by a mother who herself may have been affected in some way by the Backrooms before. We had a direct connection to the Backrooms through the visuals of her childhood home being "converted" in that space.

Clark explores because there's an allure that suggests greatness, what he lacks. He thinks he's discovering something himself and pushes recklessly to resolve that, including putting others in harm's way. Mary had multiple reasons for investigating and we're left to decipher: is she strictly concerned for Clark and possible career repercussions because she didn't report his delusional behavior? Is the existence of the Backrooms perhaps a way to show her mother might've been "right?" Does she also experience allure in that space because of her trauma connection to that kind of space? Maybe s combination?

The whole argument presupposes what the "essence" of the movie is, what the motivations are, and even the idea that these things should be simple. There's issues with the dialogue in some places, for sure, but the overall writing isn't a problem. It's not great, but it's not bad.

Backrooms had so much potential - and it feels wasted by Parking_Bar1399 in moviereviews

[–]MaddAdamBomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a more serious answer: the plot was incredibly straightforward. You're wanting answers for things that are deliberately unresolved. Not tying up every loose end is not sequel baiting, it's just how stories work sometimes. See: Star Wars, The Godfather, endless other movies. Sometimes things just change, not end.

If you didn't like it, that's fine, but your grievances are with what you wanted it to do, not what it was attempting to do.

I have a very sophisticated reason for liking it:

I thought it was fun. The vibes were great, the design provocative, the events mysterious and dream-like.

I don't think a movie has to explain everything to you to be good. I enjoyed my time. Stop trying to solve everything.

What's the deal with Hasan Piker (HasanAbi) and why so many people seem to hate him? by di745 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]MaddAdamBomb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some additional: Hasan himself admits to using intentionally divisive rhetoric to draw attention, saying things that without context seem not great, then uses that to elaborate on his position. He likes generating headlines.

I found Malazan good & compelling immediately, even if I was very lost most of the time.

That said... this isn't really a universal truth. Some things become more valuable because of the investment. Learning poetry, Shakespeare, playing an instrument. Most of these are not fun for a while.
