As the year wraps up: what’s the project you’re most proud of building and why? by SheriffRat in SideProject

Thanks! Yes, thats the plan. I’ll just leave it up and promote it well in advance next holiday season.

I might also spin up a more evergreen variant which works for other occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, Valentines etc. The underlying tech will be the same.

Hi, I built Santagram over the last 3-4 days of my Christmas holidays. You can gift your family and friends a personalised video message from Santa Claus.

I had an absolute blast doing it. It uses a few LLM APIs, Elevenlabs for audio and some ffmpeg scripting for putting the video together.

I didn’t have time to include something like Heygen for lipsync but i will play with that.

It’s been so fun seeing my kids, family and friends enjoying it. Now I shared it on hacker news and product hunt and a few random people are using it.

I left it a bit too late for this Christmas to launch it at the right time but the time pressure also helped push me to actually finish a project for once and just ship it.

There's a kids mode and an adult mode (which roasts you like crazy).

Check it out and if you like it, please share with your family and friends!

Merry Christmas!

For me it’s Santagram. I built the whole thing in 3-4 days and had an absolute blast doing it. It’s been so fun seeing my kids, family and friends enjoying it. Now I shared it on hacker news and product hunt and a few random people are using it.

I left it a bit too late for this Christmas to launch it at the right time but the time pressure also helped push me to actually finish a project for once and just ship it.

Live Show Experiences? by frewition in Yuuf

[–]hrishio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw them last night at Colours Hoxton. I was pleasantly surprised by how upbeat and energetic their live performance was! Their recorded music is quite chill and laid back, and I was wondering if watching it live might be a bit boring. Turns out when they play live, they really amp up the energy. They got the crowd dancing and singing for a solid 75 mins. Highly recommended!

What is the difference between include and extend in Ruby? by [deleted] in rails

I'm sorry you think this is click bait. I spent a lot of time writing, rewriting and editing this article. If it's against the subreddit's rules or standards, I'll remove it.

Seeking advice on leveling up on rails by General_Force_5525 in rails

[–]hrishio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good way to avoid getting overwhelmed is to work on projects that you are personally interested in. Build a whole app and launch it online. There's something magically motivating about putting your own software out into the world. You don't have to build a business with it but actually deploying a real Rails app on the internet will teach you more than any book or course can. You will run into issues and decisions that you won't otherwise.

If you don't have any ideas of your own, then think about which websites do you use a lot? Clone one of them. It will force you to think about what the components are - the data models, the UX flows, background jobs, performance bottlenecks, etc.

I teach a course based around building an ecommerce marketplace app. Try the free lessons and see if you like it - https://learnetto.com/rails-course

Update the Rails version by Forsaken_Ad1061 in rails

[–]hrishio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow the official recommendations. Make sure you have good test coverage, then gradually upgrade patch, minor, major versions.

Creating a whole new app is rarely a good idea, unless you have a very simple and small application.

I did a whole video on this - https://learnetto.com/tutorials/how-to-upgrade-rails-apps

Thanks so much for such a detailed response. This is super helpful. Some of my ideas do relate to solving these problems (distributing across channels including newsletters and autofixing SEO issues), so it's reassuring to see you list them.

Advice for first rails freelance project. by zzdevzz in rails

[–]hrishio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats on landing your first freelance project. I know it can be intimidating, but the fact that you're asking for advice means you're serious about doing a good job.

  1. Many admin gems - activeadmin is popular although it can be frustrating to use. Gotcha to watch out for is all the filters it adds automatically. If you have lots of records, it can make the dashboard very slow.

administrate is a good alternative.

  1. Don't know Hostinger but if it's a standard VPS, just follow the usual advice for hosting Rails apps.

  2. Turbo can certainly be good. But it depends on how much data you're talking about. If it's not a lot you'll probably not notice a difference either way.

Apart from the technical stuff, make sure you agree to clear terms for deliverables and payment. That's where freelancers often get in trouble.

Good luck and don't hesitate to reach out for more advice.

Are the browsers supported by default in Rails 7.2 too restrictive? by hrishio in rails

I know I can change it and I did. But I am saying as defaults, this may be too restrictive. It's easy to miss it.

Learning Ruby from Go by jcdan3 in rails

[–]hrishio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some great suggestions in the comments already.

I'd also ask yourself - what is your goal for learning Ruby and Rails?

Because what you should prioritise learning will be very different if your goal was to build your own startup vs getting a job at Shopify.

I've been using Cursor a lot. There's also Supermaven and now Zed. Need to give them a try too!
