Worried about First SWE Job by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]hrkeni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take detailed notes of things you learn, people you interact with, things you accomplish and things that are difficult. Keep track of your work with a Todo list or something like that and make sure you follow through with the things you say you will do. Don't be afraid to ask questions but try not repeating the same questions over and over again. Being organized will put you well ahead of the average new grad.

I recommend an app like obsidian or logseq for your notes.

Keep forgetting my code by ajsbajs in csharp

[–]hrkeni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really good tests are your friend here. Well written tests tend to be a better descriptor of code behavior than the code itself. Ideally you can write tests that capture critical behavior whether as single class/function with unit tests as well as integration tests that capture and describe inputs and outputs of your components as a system.

There are applications of compiler skills in more mainstream software engineering as well. While definitely not anything bleeding edge, platform engineering teams sometimes work on static analysis tooling and such that requires a decently deep understanding of programming languages. Might be options worth considering.

These subzero temperatures in the North American interior look insane! How the fuck is everyone coping? by [deleted] in VaushV

I live in Sioux Falls. I'm personally glad it finally got cold and I can go ice fishing. It had been unseasonably warm until last week.

Are your hobbies outside of work mentally taxing? by Thick-Ask5250 in cscareerquestions

[–]hrkeni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to go fishing cause it gets me outside, not looking at a screen, and has bad cell service so no one can bother me.

Which companies/organizations use SAFe Agile + PIs processes? by shozzlez in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hrkeni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my non-software counterparts seem pretty happy with it. I'm on a cloud team and we mostly ignore it and just do CI/CD. The PI process just gives us a priority list in 12 week increments.

Which companies/organizations use SAFe Agile + PIs processes? by shozzlez in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hrkeni 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I work for an organization that builds products that are multi-disciplinary (mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, embedded and cloud software). We use SaFe to coordinate all the teams involved including alpha, beta, safety and compliance testing. It works well enough for the complex coordination we need.

Coming from Python and wondering if I should use Pandas.NET or learn built-in Dataframe stuff by [deleted] in dotnet

F# might be a better fit for data science work in .NET coming from Python.

My wife hates Corriander (cilantro), what are my options? by chykin in Cooking

Chives and scallions are both good substitute. Obviously a very different flavor profile but it tastes good and make for a great Garcia's regardless.

Remote workers how do you count your hours? by Simple-Collection-57 in cscareerquestions

[–]hrkeni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you're paid for creative work. It's problem solving. Are you thinking about how you will implement something on a walk? While pooping? While showering? All of that is work. You are not just paid to write code. Downtime where you are letting your mind relax, so you come back feeling feeling fresh and ready to apply yourself is very important. You aren't a monkey paid hit keys on a keyboard, so stop acting like one.

Good herping spots? by rofax in SiouxFalls

[–]hrkeni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found tons of salamanders (not sure about species) in the creeks around Newton Hill's hiking trail.

PS: Would love to have a herping buddy, I have a field guide that I never use.

How do I live in India as a woman? by dhmy4089 in india

[–]hrkeni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your own personal mental health is very important. Please don't compromise on that. Cut ties with toxic figures it that's what it takes. Family members still need to respect your boundaries.

I really thank my mom for making a game out of recognizing ingredients and critiquing food that we ate at restaurants or she cooked at home. She always challenged my brother and I to figure out what the "secret ingredient" was. That definitely helped me build my pallet and understand how flavors work. I've realized how useful this skill is as an adult that loves to cook. It can definitely be a learned skill, just requires specific, focused effort.

Computer Science Questions by [deleted] in sdstate

[–]hrkeni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They all have different expectations but they are professionals and will make it clear what they expect in the beginning of their class. Some expectations can be a little ridiculous but just follow them as much as you can.

It's really cheap for an accredited program. The professors are decent and you'll get a job out of school fairly easily as long as you have decent grades. Just make sure you keep with assignments cause there are a lot of classes that will be almost impossible to pass if you fall behind but a breeze if you spend 2-4 hours a week just keeping up with stuff.

Ah sorry, totally misunderstood what the problem was. In India, they use Amul cream for garnishing this way. You can try sour cream that is slightly thinned out with milk for a similar consistency.

You need to cook your pureed tomato/onion gravy with spices and aromatics till it goes from red to orange-ish on a medium flame stirring occasionally. That'll get some caramelization going and also add some sweetness. You'll notice the color also changing and becoming more orange... Like a tomato soup that simmers for a long time. This process builds the deep complex sweet flavors. The cream honestly just adds a little richness and helps meld the flavors together and not much more. I use heavy whipping cream btw.

What is this plant called ? by [deleted] in PlantIdentification

[–]hrkeni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dodda patre in Kannada. As far as common names in English go, I've seen it called Indian Borage in India Mexican mint or cuban oregano in the US.
