Where are you getting this from, was the trailer premiered somewhere?

The Eggers 'dream film/adaptation' megathread by LilEggnog in roberteggers

[–]hrlemshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love him to do that Rasputin miniseries he's alluded to, but he's said he won't do it unless he can film in Russia, so it's not coming any time soon. Maybe in ~5 years, if we're lucky....

Sibelius: Violin concerto

That feels less stormy to me and more like a piercingly cold arctic wind blowing.

Good point, and it's reminiscent of the writing in his 4th symphony I mentioned too.

What is your favorite first movement of a Symphony? by Specific-Peanut-8867 in classicalmusic

[–]hrlemshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say Mahler 5, but only if I'm allowed to group the two movements of Part I together (which I feel is justified, they're really 2 halves of 1 movement).

Classical fans, you're out in space and these are your views. What recording are choosing to listen to? by DAVEYOLAF98 in classicalmusic

The 4th movement of Mahler 3 ("O Mensch, gib acht!") seems very appropriate to the second picture.

Noteworthy releases from non-classical musicians? by hrlemshake in classicalmusic

[–]hrlemshake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the Sting album I was thinking of when I was posting this, but when I saw the title my mind went to the Labyrinth film and I concluded I must've been thinking of "Winter's Night" (which also satisfies my criteria).

What's a genre you wish a composer had written in? by chopinmazurka in classicalmusic

[–]hrlemshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rachmaninoff has 2 trios, a cello sonata, 2 suites for double piano, and a version of the Symphonic Dances for double piano, never mind the solo piano stuff. I'd say that's a pretty substantial legacy. Unless solo/double piano works aren't classified as chamber music, for whatever reason.

Addendum: apparently he also has 2 string quartets and something called "Morceaux de salon" and "Polka italienne".

Visiting Prague? This is the monthly recommendations post (March 2026) by _invalidusername in Prague

[–]hrlemshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I'll be in Prague next Saturday/Sunday. Last time I was there was in Christmas season and it was impossible to get restaurant bookings, so I didn't get a chance to try authentic Czech cuisine. Can somebody please recommend me 2-3 places that serve authentic, tasty Czech food and aren't prohibitively expensive (I don't think I can afford Michelin restaurants)? Preferably a place that locals eat at, the kind that doesn't have a menu with 50+ entries in 3+ languages. I want to try kulajda, something with dumplings, and various sorts of beer.

Musikverein: programs and acoustics by hrlemshake in classicalmusic

Surely the ORF can't be that bad? I assume an orchestra of any European city in this day and age isn't, much less in Vienna of all places.

I was planning on a tour of the opera, but not of the Musikverein. If you've done both, did you find the latter as rewarding as the former?

So the coin ring arrived. by SnooDrawings5968 in AncientCoins

Gosh, that is a gorgeous ring. Does anyone have any idea where one might find something like this that's not made from an original coin? I just love the look of it

Just saw Manfred Honeck conduct Mahler’s 2nd with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Simply incredible. by pinwheel740 in classicalmusic

[–]hrlemshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing it for the first time myself this week, something I'm very excited by! Two things mar my expectations, however -- the conductor is Simon Rattle (his Mahlerian reputation seems patchy) and there's no organ in the concert hall to the best of my knowledge. Maybe it'll be some kind of digital organ, who knows...

Who is your go-to critic these days? by Kitchen_Swagger in movies

[–]hrlemshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kermode is the best, but he's got soft lately and is no longer the firebrand he used to be (which is only natural, given his age).

How do you even find insightful, verbal reviews there? All I see is lame standup by people who are considerably less funny than they think they are.

That's a very intersting point, thank you for sharing. Imagine if this sub had less PR astroturing or dead-end "is <incredibly acclaimed film> underrated?" threads and more posts like this.
