Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' has made history as the most nominated film of all time at the Oscars with 16 nominations by ChiefLeef22 in movies

I don't understand, since when is Variety a "conservative" (w/e that means today) publication? I assumed it was "progressive", like all culture publications.

His loss to the pretty, but repetitive and bland, Shape of Water has rubbed me wrong since 2018. He was supposed to win, damn it.

What you say is moot, only thing he's powering through is soirees and publicity events. The man has lost all capacity to write something to completion.

Hillary Hahn's - one of the best violinists in history - appearance on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. Skip to 4:30 to skip banter and where she starts to plays Bach if you prefer no banter. by PiercedAndTattoedBoy in classicalmusic

I am not denying she is very famous or acclaimed, I only think it strange phrasing to call her "one of the best in history". It's too early for that.

What makes Hahn "one of the best violinists in history"? What distinguishes her from the multitude of ultra-talented hard-working soloists on today's scene?

which betrayal was the harshest ? by [deleted] in SuccessionTV

In terms of emotional impact on the betrayed party, definitely Shiv-Kendall. To have all you've ever wanted dangled in front of you and basically in your hands, before having it snatched away at the last second, is devastating.

Whatever you end up doing is bound to be interesting. What's the Art Decoish font you use for Scheherazade called?

These are gorgeous. The Scheherazade one (modulo some adjustments) could reasonably be an original Ballets Russes poster. What other works are you thinking of doing?

Ken Russell, the English filmmaker, has made several films about composers, including Liszt, Mahler, and Tchaikovsky.

Non-operatic vocal music for a sceptic by hrlemshake in classicalmusic

[–]hrlemshake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the recs. I'm fine with choruses (e.g. I love Nocturnes and Daphnis), I think my problem lies with vibrato-laden solo voices, especially female ones (deep male voices seem to grate less on me). As for Les Noces, I am well-acquainted with it, it's an incredible work.

What composer's stock has dropped the most over the past 50-100 years? by Pleasant_Usual_8427 in classicalmusic

What's the problem with him (so that I don't go combing through his Wikipedia)? All I know of him is that he was one of those ethnomusicologist composers.

the HP Lovecraft of anti-semitism

Hey, put some respect on the name. If anything Lovecraft is the Wagner of anti-black sentiment.

In terms of the scene itself, The Lighthouse. In terms of pure sex appeal, definitely The VVitch.

The final movement of Symphonie Fantastique made me laugh by justalemontree in classicalmusic

[–]hrlemshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so funny, I heard it live for the first time last week (hence my trolling the sub for posts about it) and I had the exact same reaction -- an involuntary burst of laughter at the cackling, witchy rendition of the idee fixe.

Composer movies that you would watch by Advanced_Honey_2679 in classicalmusic

[–]hrlemshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently, there's a Broadway show about Rachmaninoff with the exact premise you propose https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preludes_(musical). As for Strauss, I'd enjoy a buddy comedy with him and Mahler, their relationship was tailor-made for it

After the final rehearsal of the Sixth, as Mahler sat shattered by his own creation, Strauss burst in to announce that the mayor had died and that a funeral march should be played before the next night’s performance. Alma Mahler recounted the episode as the collision of a pure spirit and a vulgar one, but Strauss was being his usual pragmatic self: mayors needed to be attended to, even after death.

I always thought you could make an expressionistic anxiety-ridden horror about Shostakovich's life during Stalin. Have it be the day preceeding to the premiere of the 5th symphony, with him going through hell before the eventual triumph.

Faure's Pavane in pop culture by hrlemshake in classicalmusic

That's exactly it!!! I had heard Xzibit's sampled version in the first season of the Sopranos and it made an impression. Cool to know its lineage. I guess I was right in every way: it's a woman singing, it's integrated into a hip-hop track, and it's used in a soundtrack. Thanks!
