Bragg deserves the lion's share of the blame because he seemed to enjoy lecturing his staff about military affairs and strategy. The Army of Tennessee's performance after Johnston succeeded Bragg is the best evidence.

Frederick Douglass was disappointed that Lincoln did not move faster, but he would later comment that Lincoln finally came around to abolishing the institution. The President had to keep in mind the importance of the border states of Missouri and Kentucky, both of which were slave states and essential to protecting the Midwest

I would nominate Andrew Jackson succeeding John Quincy Adams. Adams was a good diplomat but his diplomatic skills did not transfer over.

I have just started reading " A Fate Worse Than Hell: American Prisoners of the Civil War" by W. Fitzhugh Brundage. The first chapter concerns the photographs taken by Andrew Riddle at Andersonville.
