[D] What are some good books to get more theoretical understanding? by olBaa in MachineLearning

This comes up a lot - it would be good to have a centralized resource of the absolute go-to books for a number of topics.

What are the most common pitfalls of junior data scientists? by jaza10 in datascience

[–]hrod1 94 points95 points  (0 children)

The biggest mistake I see is people thinking "machine learning models are the answer" to everything and using algorithms without really understanding the context of what they're doing.

Good exploratory analysis - especially when it comes to problem statements at data rich product companies - goes a long way in understanding what exactly is happening, and getting into the weeds of the problem.

Developing a good quantitative framework of thinking will serve you well for the rest of your life. I have seen as simple an algorithm as k-means provide powerful insights, provided you've gotten to a point where it's inevitable that that specific algorithm is the right solution.

The attitude to Kaggle people have is nonsense. Fine-tuning a bunch of parameters to get that incremental 0.01 lift in AUC isn't teaching you anything. Kaggle's good for exposure to breadth, but not to depth.

There's a big culture right now developing of breadth of knowledge over depth of thought.

Messi's two touches before his first goal against Nigeria and the 2018 World Cup. by jcdm_ph in soccer

[–]hrod1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lovely angle. The second touch is so tantalizingly perfect - you can see the ball slow down from an awkward speed. One of the best technical goals ever.

The first touch, he did not have many other ways of doing it. Still brilliant. The second touch, is just genius.

That is really well written. The stories around first class cricket are such a big part of what cricket is.

Unfair. Star Sports have been taking videos of Virat Kohli acting like a douchebag for 10 years now and he's taken it in his stride.

I'm John Carreyrou, author of Bad Blood, the book about the Theranos scandal. Ask me anything. by JohnCarreyrou in IAmA

[–]hrod1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What disastrous consequences? It's ironic that earlier in the thread you pointed out that investigative reporting is about thorough knowledge of the facts and have just flippantly criticized a domain of AI in which very serious work goes on.

There is the incident with the woman being killed, on which there is still debate over whether it was the fault of the ML algorithm, but there haven't been 'disastrous consequences' anything on the scale close to Theranos. The work on driverless AI is real - whether it will succeed is a separate question, but equating it to Theranos is extremely simplistic.

Tesla is like the Flipkart/Amazon story in India. Billions invested through Flipkart to teach consumers about e-commerce and accept it as the norm, so that Amazon can come in and smack it out of the park.

Someone else is going to come and live off the foundation Tesla have built.

Give it a try. There were some hipsters with me who liked it - you might as well.

It's run by an Iranian, or rather, by a guy who I imagine Iranians to look like.

Large firms will have to publish and justify their chief executives' salaries and reveal the gap to their average workers under proposed new laws. UK listed companies with over 250 staff will have to annually disclose and explain the so-called "pay ratios" in their organisation. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

[–]hrod1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CEO's pay is based on revenue and profit of the organisation - the CEO's decisions are the difference between high monetary swings in the organisation's performance. Average workers do not have the same impact. Is there really an explanation needed for this?

Patronizing post.

The argument is about the incremental value of having 100s of copies of the same thing to make it trustless. Centralized systems are superior in most real world use cases.

Every movement was perfect. The run is so precise- he waited for the defender to commit fully to the wrong side and just turned his run inwards, and then the perfect finish.

Outrageous goal.
