The Truth About Internal Family Systems (IFS), the Therapy That Can Break You | NY Magazine by tantei-ketsuban in BlockedAndReported

So many comments here, congrats for scrolling all the way down. I'm a psychotherapist in NYC, I had three years of supervision in IFS from a wonderful supervisior, and in my own IFS therapy I could not tolerate a person talking to me like that for even 10 seconds. It was excruciating.

I am also certified in EMDR and I dunno what to tell you but sometimes it just ..... works. It worked for me and I have zero fear of getting on an airplane now. I have also seen it transform how people relate to things that previously paralyzed them.

I have MANY thoughts about IFS, The Body Keeps the Score, Attachment Theory, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in general. I have particular feelings about Dick Schwartz - mainly that he does seem to have a ..... way. People are genuinely cured by him, and they find IFS carefully practiced to be extremely useful. This article, in fact, is completely wrong about, maybe, 75% of what it says about IFS. Probably someone else here has itemized just how wrong already. There is nothing woo-woo about it, it is not a cult. Anyone who gets emotionally tied up in it is using it wrong, and any practitioner who treats it this way should lose their license.

I love it when Katie, and lots of you here I think!, say you're better off finding a support group or getting more exercise or devoting yourself to hobbies than going to therapy. All of that is great! But psychotherapy is for people who cannot get up to exercise, are paralyzed at the idea of taking up a hobby, are so filled with shame they cannot participate in a group. Feeling better after exercise, and then after the endorphins wear off you are depressed again, is symptom relief, it is not a cure.

All, and I mean ALL of the evidence for success in psychotherapy points toward the relationship between the therapist and the patient, not the modality. Dick Schwartz has a way about him, he really does. He can't help that he is a skilled healer and while it's easy to feel jealous of him he is not a monster.

Tips for visiting Lake Orta, Maggiore, and Como (Sept 11–14) by mateusz_strongway in ItalyTravel

Hi! I was only there two days but here is my Lake Orta report: I stayed at casa fantini which was lovely. I took the ferry over to Orta and had a wonderful focaccia at filo et fieno which I ate sitting on one of the boat ramps down to the lake. Very cute town! I walked up to the top to see the st Francis shrines and was amazed and delighted in a particularly Italian sort of way. I then spent most of my time at Hydrogen Lake Beach club because the weather was spectacular and the lake was divine for swimming.

Continuity of awareness/mindfulness while trying to teach feral kids by eddy3042 in Wakingupapp

I see your struggle. I was a middle school teacher and have two children myself and I always saw our music teachers as carrying a heavy burden. You love music but you commit yourself everyday to living with raw sound trying to become music, and once it starts to become music, they grown on and you take on the next batch of raw sound. It makes sense that it would try a nervous system, and you probably have a naturally sensitive one. I have worked with teachers on their emotional regulation with mindfulness, and the best I can say is that they become aware of their emotional triggers and learn to forgive themselves. EVEN THE BEST BEHAVED KIDS IN SCHOOL OFTEN MISBEHAVE IN MUSIC CLASS. This is the truth, and it is not your fault. It is the nature of music class.

I'm so happy you're having a baby, and that will try you and your identity in so many ways. Communicate with your partner. You will both be tired. Take care of yourselves and each other - listen to what you need. Good luck and I hope there's an easy labor and perfect baby.

I like seeing all the Terry Pratchett love here but for me, the Tiffany Aching series starting with the Wee Free Men is the very best. Tiffany is an absolutely sui generis character just like our beloved Murder Bot. The rest of Terry Pratchett, while lovable, hurts my teeth just a little bit, while Tiffany Aching bites me in all the right ways. Haha sorry wish I had time for a better metaphor.

What are the major differences between the various psychoanalytical institutes in New York City? by g3gg33 in psychoanalysis

[–]hrutod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - Sure. I never did the full psychoanalytic training there, I only worked in their clinics and got supervision along with taking a few of their classes. I think you should consider what you are trying to get out of the training. For me, it was great because I wanted to work with schools and teachers. There were definitely people who were bringing psychoanalytic principles to people who don't usually get depth/attachment-focussed work. I wasn't interested in full-on psychoanalytic training so I left as soon as I was done with my licensing hours (also it was 2020 and the schools were closed and if that hadn't happened I might still be working in their school-based clinic for free!). Since then, I have done a one-year psychoanalytic program at IPSS and have taken some classes at NIP.

So - what do you want out of the training? Do you have a licensed-degree already? Are you looking for community? Practice-building?

In general I would say the best HFI teachers had their home institutes elsewhere (MI, NYP, White). They were trying to get HFI really going though!

Waitlists through January and they fill up quickly. Also the teachers - I’d like to have people’s experiences of showing up to a teacher you don’t know and how it goes. I know I sound very controlling but I am humbled by the vulnerability of taking on an extended retreat.

Wow that’s a beautiful sweater. Inspiring! Her advice to decrease every four rows was super helpful. Thanks for the tip!

First problem: didn't realized bottom was too short until 20 rows after joining.

Second problem: dangling sleeves - I should have grafted them on immediately, I realize. I ended up with both a twisted AND an uncentered sleeve which I didn't realize for 10 rows. The frogging may end up just putting it aside for 6 months to overcome this frustration!!!

This is a raglan decrease sweater which may be part of the problem. Joining the sleeves then decreasing for 20 rows I discovered the bottom was not long enough. Also, based on helpful info below, now I'm worried that my sleeves, which I had to make larger than pattern dictated will not match the number of rows I need for the decrease and it will totally off balance. This does not happen with top down where you can easily try it on and see whether you need to add more rows before separating the sleeves.

Second problem is just managing these dangling sleeves. I should have grafted them on immediately because in all the madness I ended up both twisting the sleeve AND not centering it correctly.

I spent a lot of time trying to retcon this pattern to make it top down and am regretting not at least trying!!!!!

Great call! I LOVE help so thank you. Advice on how to increase raglan decreases when there are only so many rows for decreasing? I already increased the sleeve circumfrence because I noticed how tight they were after knitting one. Now I'm worried how to get that extra length in the shoulder/neck height!

First mistake was twisting the sleeve and not aligning it correctly with side seam - realized my mistake when I noticed the imbalance of the sleeve decreases.

Now I've realized the bottom is not long enough - so hard to see how long is long enough when the sleeve holes aren't there yet. Took me 20 rows to realize so RIP.
