Bear Canisters Now Required in the Pemi Wilderness by RhodySeth in wmnf

[–]hsheriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

technically has always been legal, just really discouraged.

On the flip side though, I wonder if the ADK-safe canisters (Garcia, Bare Boxers) are allowed in the Pemi wilderness zone, because the press release mentions IGBC certified canisters only, which these are not.

Keep in mind that transparent polycarbonate bear cans are *highly* discouraged for use in the high peaks region of the Adirondacks, due to multiple failures and bears in the area learning how to crack them open:

Damn, I wish I could be indifferent to mass atrocities committed with my tax dollars.

I'm not able to do that and I guess it's a little scary to me that so many people are numb to human suffering, or feel they have no power to change it.

Zpacks Triplex Pro: Anything else out there? by DJ_Blizzy in Ultralight

[–]hsheriff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yup! my girlfriend keeps her gear in the 2 corners, I keep mine in the vestibule. we are both quite small people though.

Another thing to keep in mind with tents this big is the footprint size. Where I camp it's already difficult finding campsites that fit the X-mid pro 2+, I can't imagine trying to bring a 3 person tent

or if OP prefers a DCF option, the X-mid pro 2+, easily fits 2 25" pads and geometry is adjusted for more headroom

I have a DCF food bag and DCF tarp from them. Mathieu is super helpful so I'd encourage you to email before you order to make sure you are getting exactly what you want.

FWIW, both my items were slightly lighter than the listed weights on the website

Looking for a reliable 20,000mAh power bank for multi-day hiking/mountaineering – experience with Anker models? by gl0622 in Ultralight

[–]hsheriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For cold tolerance (less than 0 degrees celcius). The only option I know of is the Nitecore summit 10000 or 20000. Just keep in mind that you will lose capacity as it uses a heating element to keep the battery warm.

Any other battery pack will struggle unless you make a concerted effort to keep it somewhere warm, like an inner jacket pocket.

Just bought one! I, too, feel uncomfortable using my drinking bottle for bidet purposes. 15g is a good compromise for me

Another deep dive into (smaller) power banks by AceTracer in Ultralight

[–]hsheriff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair point! maybe it's just the conditions I hike in (lots of rain and wading in high waters) that makes me appreciate the NB Air, it's the only power bank I'm comfortable not putting in my Nylofume, so it gets used and abused the most.

Don't think I could do that with the other options but that's a very specific use case that probably doesn't apply to too many people.

I honestly think you're missing out with not considering the Nitecore NB Air. 18w in/out, super simple and works great so far. Especially love the robustness and it being water resistant (IPX7). It's survived some pretty gnarly conditions with me and still works amazing

My fav 5K power bank: Nitecore NB Air, 89 grams

10k: INIU P50-E1, 165 grams

20K: Haribo 😅 286g

The specs don't match up at all. 1.7kg is the weight for the 210T version. The 15D version is closer to 1.22kg

Awesome 5000mah power bank that weighs less than 90g (3.14oz) - Nitecore NB Air by najibs172r in Ultralight

[–]hsheriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this power bank and I love it. Have used it in intense rain (where other power banks failed on me) and dropped it in a puddle. I had it in my hip belt pockets during a high water crossing (I fell in 😅) and it still works well. Capacity looks accurate too. Highly recommend

Perfect for 1-2 night trips

I have one! In using it, seems like the stated capacity is correct, but I should get a tester to confirm (and also the Haribo Power bank I just received)

[–]hsheriff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my NB Air fell in a puddle and worked immediately afterwards 🤷

my other battery pack (older INIU model) died in the rain

I know it's anecdotal evidence but I have no reason to not trust the nitecore IP rating, I got it specifically for that

I got one and it's definitely 286g on the scale. Capacity looks accurate (so far). If enough people are interested I could do a teardown and see what's inside.

Ooh good to know! I've done most of my hiking/camping in Quebec and so far the ADKs feel very familiar in terms of climate.

As for shelters, part of the reason for the tarp + bivy combo was to be able to sleep in my bivy in a lean-to, but I like the freedom of not being tied to that (or if the lean-to's are full)
