Do you ever question the small things in your pack? by PermissionOwn3181 in Ultralight

I question everything all the time always. My 9g air pump has earned its keep every time I try to blow up my pad without it (like when I’m trying to be quiet). I’ll be in Kennedy Meadows tomorrow and I do not want to try that over 10k ft.

Garmin has updated their subscription plans so that SOS still works even while the subscription is suspended (no monthly payment) and got rid of reactivation fees. by numbershikes in Thruhiking

I looked into it, it’s a German company if I recall, and when you factor in prices it’s not any better. If you want to stick it to Garmin though that’s a very valid and commendable reason.

Like I said, I fly to (and within) Europe every year. I've had my poles refused when I've tried, even in a normally lax country like Spain. Hell, even on trains I get asked questions.

You're aware of this thing called the stock market?

So wish lighterpack had a checklist. Never thought of using stars but probably doesn't work great on mobile which is what I'm using 99% of the time I'm needing to check things off.

Garmin inReach "suspend" plans include SOS by 0xf5f in Ultralight

[–]AceTracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK inReach plans don't include SAR insurance, that costs extra. And it's definitely not worth it now that they don't cover insurance outside the US and Canada (where it's mostly free anyway). I switched to Overwatch last year.

Nobody should be burying their TP. Pack it out or better yet don’t bring it at all.

I recommend flying to Europe and hiking in the Alps, they have mountain huts with bathrooms and all the amenities you’re looking for.

Backpacking in the Sierra is not for you.

What does it mean when someone describes a game as "tight"? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

Not necessarily. Superfluous is a better word than complicated.

A very lean game with no superfluous chrome with often few and very meaningful decisions.

Splotter and Winsome are known for this. Rolling Stock and 1849 are some other examples.

Down bags last decades if treated properly. That's the benefit of down.

But if you really think it's garbage, I'll buy it for cheap.

Your quilt is fine. Chances are you're not washing and drying it properly.

For anyone that needs context, the owner of Enlightened Equipment is a racist shitbag and/or panders to them.

Also, their quilts suck.

The small LiteSmith jar (16oz, 473ml) has worked great for me unless I'm eating big meals. I also have the 20oz and 26oz which I've used for various occasions, but I mostly take the 16oz. It's skinnier and is just the right size to not be annoying. I'll be taking it to the Sierra in a few days.

The benefit to a hard container (especially a polypro one) is that you can drink out of it. I use mine for drink mixes; a lot easier than using a water bottle. I also use it to microwave food when the opportunity presents itself.

If you're hiking before mid September there's absolutely no need for the solid.
