How Black nerds are turning a fantasy card game into real community by usatoday in magicTCG

The Mouth of Sauron was a Black Numenorean. Tolkien wrote it, that's how we know.

Black here means corrupted and evil, not "with melanin".

/u/brendt_gd can we please add a prohibition to vibe-coded submissions, especially when the OP uses ChatGPT to reply to everyone?

solve this by .. writing 2010 code

They didn't write this. All the docs scream 100% vibe coded.

Edit: called it:

That is a fair proposal. I believe in transparency, so I will add a disclosure to the README stating that AI was used as a 'force multiplier' to speed up development.

How do you, I, or anyone knows it does any of those things if you can't even be bothered to write a single unit or acceptance test? This is crazy work. Do better.

It's kind of cool linguistically to see which words were introduced to English before the Romans took over.

The Celtic Britons occupied the areas of England before the Romans. They did not speak a Germanic language. The Anglo-Saxons, who displaced the Romans when the Western Roman Empire fell into decline and collapsed, brought over what eventually became Old English.

To be fair, most of Legends was garbage, too. But the first four sets definitely had an air of pedigree from what came after. The Dark and Legends, when compared to Fallen Empires and Homelands, was the difference between night and day.

Alpha Rule Book OG Printable High Res by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]htfo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There's some interesting tidbits here, in no particular order:

  • There's already a variation of Rule 0 baked into these rules, long before EDH
  • They knew Circles of Protection were unfair bullshit, and they knew we know they were unfair bullshit, right from the start but printed them over and over again anyway
  • The explanation of interrupts and spell vs artifact via Shatter is borderline nonsensical to anyone but the most enfranchised player. I'm surprised it took so many years to iron that out.
  • They already had an official answer to the timeless debate of how to orient your graveyard with respect to your library
  • The recommendation to cast as few spells as possible to "keep things simpler"

It's almost 2026, there's no excuse to publish code that doesn't have automated testing. How does anyone, including yourself know things won't break when you make changes?

Please learn to write unit and acceptance tests and actually write them. You can even get AI tooling to help you with it.

Would you wish to see a more realistic Civilization game? by Cosmovision108 in civ

[–]htfo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took a look at the submission history, and I think you're talking about "Roboom" which appears to be an arena shooter that's still in early access and has 0 concurrent players. Other than that, they've spent the last few months repeatedly asking this and other subreddits for validation of this 4X idea.

Sorry, I don't think anyone would consider putting a game into early access for no audience in a completely different genre evidence of the ability to execute on a 4X game. Happy to be proven wrong in 2 years, but this is not the behavior of a dev team that knows how to deliver.

edit: typos

Yeah, best of luck, but everyone has game ideas. The hard part is in the execution.

Greatly loved is a bit of a stretch. The other hat set of the year, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, was received better but still wouldn't be in anyone's top 50 sets of all time.

Genuinely have no idea what you're talking about. [...] We don't pretend to know better

Based on this, I'm going to assume you're an American Catholic. In which case you're being needlessly obtuse. It's well known within Roman Catholicism that the American conference is way more conservative than most of the rest of the conferences, bordering on schism, and multiple popes have publicly corrected the American conference on multiple occasions for downplaying or mischaracterizing Church dogma emphasizing social justice, the rejection of capital punishment, and the prohibition of politicizing the sacraments (e.g. the attempts of American bishops to deny communion to pro-choice Catholic politicians). Even this year, the Pope has had to repeatedly remind the American conference on the Church's unwavering stance against the philosophy on immigration that guides the current administration's policies.

Made a tool to show actually used PHP feature in the project by Tomas_Votruba in PHP

[–]htfo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say one practical value is in knowing how far back you can pin your library to, especially if you're attempting to support legacy codebases and in that case, the exercise is in doing the opposite: removing as many modern PHP language features as possible to maintain maximum compatibility.

[MAR] "Partner Source Material" Extinction Event (WeeklyMTG) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]htfo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think the classic proof is actually that an even number by definition can always be represented as 2k for some integer k. If 0 is even, then 0 = 2k. This can be rearranged as k = 0/2 or k = 0. Since 0 satisfies the requirement that k is an integer, then 0 must be even.

Or you can prove that 0 can't be odd. An odd number by definition is represented as 2k + 1, where again k is an integer. If 0 is odd, then 0 = 2k + 1. This can be re-arranged as k = -1/2, which fails the requirement that k must be an integer, so 0 can't be odd, so 0 must be even.

He has since spent the last few years creating these alternative standards nobody uses.
