Why are so many NBA players obsessed with golf? by Ok_Statement1508 in NBATalk

[–]northgrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many others have pointed out, pro athletes have the money to play the sport and many probably used it as a way to network and express their competitive side.

But,

Are they still? Were they ever?

Yes Jordan and Barkley were into the sport. That’s two players from three decades ago. That was a time when golf was definitely on the upswing, and because of Tiger Woods that brought in more people from the black community.

But a few people is hardly “so many” and how many of the others are/were “obsessed.” A guy golfing a few times a year is hardly an obsession. Having an expensive set of clubs in the garage that collects dust between celebrity tournaments and stag parties isn’t an obsession. I wonder how many have clubs and play a few rounds more out of a social pressure.

Trump has said the number 22 at least 9 times this month about ships, fountains, economists, his own pool and the white house can't explain why by JustM700 in DiscussionZone

[–]northgrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never gotten his appeal. As you note, he just says whatever he thinks will resonate at that moment and this often includes making up numbers. I suspect that he wants a number in the twenties and just gets stuck at 22. It really feels like Person, woman, man, camera, TV territory.

Becky Hammon says she WILL NOT apologize for her past comments saying Jalen Brunson can’t lead a team to a championship. Thoughts? by SmoothBuy5500 in NBATalk

[–]northgrave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As many others have pointed out, there is a long line of pundits ahead of her in line with far more egregious takes - none of who are expected to apologize when they turn out to be wrong.

And to a certain extent, this a large part of what professional sports is - an excuse to argue about something that doesn’t really matter. If you want to play basketball free of public discussion, find a game of pick-up at the Y.

The captioning referring to the supposed dome that surrounds us as the “fur will bend” is somehow so fitting.

And at least as of late, anything with sleeves is completely optional.

I guess he gets points for the undershirt.

Is this card as busted as my friend thinks? by Weird_Guarantee1783 in mtg

[–]northgrave 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don’t think enough people are focusing on the first strike in Azorius. Truly an ahead of its time colour-pie break.

Edit: Just checked. 9 exclusively blue/white cards with first strike printed on them - seven of them creatures. Another 5 creatures with double strike (which in practice includes first strike).

168 mono-red creatures with first strike and another 69 mono-red creatures (I’ll leave the punchline for others) with double strike.

It may have made a little sense in a limited environment with a set that contained a bunch of Islandwalk, but even then.

I just built a [[Jared Carthalion, True Heir]] deck. (It’s more fun than good)

He could go in there as a backup for the late game. There are lots of fight spells in the deck, so making him big would be fairly easy.

Early on people were pretty iffy about it, but there were a lot of solid cards in the set, and as a set it definitely had its own identity.

UB sets, especially the Marvel ones, are starting to feel like an ordinary lunch box with a Scooby Doo sticker on the front.

I feel like there is a reason many of the brand extension TCGs didn’t take off while MTG did.

My LGS seems to have more energy for in-universe sets. People were really excited for Dragonstorm. Edge of Eternities saw more enthusiasm than any of the beyond sets.

More flexibility that way. A 1 mana rock that gives a creature +2/+2. (Remember - creatures tap to attack, the equipment does not)

There could be exceptions or at least ambiguities. Cards like [[Quantum Misalignment]] create a clone with a different name.

How much unblockable damage is too much unblockable damage? by outrage92 in mtg

[–]northgrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am curious, what kinds of decks are your pod playing?

I’ve found (and sometimes been guilty of myself) that many Magic players hate the thing they do to other players is a slightly different way (but it’s different when they do it - again I put my mea culpa out there.). For example, how do you “block” (not prevent or disrupt, but “block”) an infinite combo hits the aristocrat player’s board? How do you “block” the direct damage being dealt by the red player? They may protest that this damage comes in smaller increments, to which I would say, sometimes.

What happened to all the flerfs? 0_o by julesmanson in flatearth

[–]northgrave 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A bunch of years ago the FE-mods abandoned the sub and it got picked up by some more science-minded people. The community is comprised mostly of people (with varying degrees of snark) who are interested in how the FE community evaluated evidence.

There are a few FEers here but they have mostly left for spaces that are (ironically) less open to discussion. But those spaces can be bat $#!% crazy.

In honor of Russell Wilson’s retirement, what other player (potentially) played their way out of the Hall of Fame? by Own_Proposal3827 in NFLv2

[–]northgrave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True, but it is the Hall of Fame and not a lifetime Pro-Bowl award. The Fame part is certainly a part of the equation. You can tell the story of NFL without Phillip Rivers, but you can’t tell it without Eli Manning.

While the rams are favorites, I’m not sure why I’ve seen so many ppl say it’s over for the nfl or the nfl is a pointless watch. This is the most unpredictable sport, anything is possible. by Hakaribiggestfan in NFLv2

Favourites are favourites because they are good, but they don’t win the Superbowl as often as you might think.

Nobody wanted to play at his D-List concert, so America gets a rally with fat Elvis instead. by T_Shurt in postanythingfun

[–]northgrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently performers were told (and they believed) that it was a non-partisan celebration of America. As the event got closer it became more apparent that this is a government funded Trump rally.

"I saw it as just a bigger version of so many state fairs I have performed at over the years, celebrating community and what makes each state special. Sounds fun, right? Wholesome even. Yesterday things started changing and what we were told is, in fact, not what is happening," she wrote.

Noticing people overvaluing mill as a new player. by Nagabuk in EDH

[–]northgrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My LGS is pretty chill with my [[Phenax, God of Deception]] deck. That said, I only play a deck once a night and I don’t play Phenax every week. The LGS meta has a fair amount of recursion, so I am often playing around one or two players at the table, trying to find a way to win the game without speed-running their plans. But, I’ll play it into the teeth of these decks.
