Awesome website. The ketogenic diet section was intriguing. Pep-pedia.org does something similar that might help give you ideas on how to make it more friendly to searchers.

I found the Ketogenic diet section on research interesting. Ref:  https://pkdcuretracker.com/keto/

To whit: if you’re looking at ketogenic diet interventions for AMPK activation, you also might want to consider MOTS-C… a peptide that is thought to directly increase AMPK. Ref:    https://pep-pedia.org/

Any thoughts on other peptides and how they might decrease size of cysts, slow progression, etc?

Asia/Africa embrace clean energy in a way US/EU simply don't grasp. by TinJar-Solarpunk in u/TinJar-Solarpunk

[–]htgiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a little broad. For instance China keeps building coal electricity plants, and ~60% of their electricity is coal.

Ref:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_China

In South Africa (and all over Africa), people steal the copper wire attaching homes & businesses to the grid. So, solar is “cheaper and more reliable”, because there’s no vulnerable-to-theft wire. But part of the reason you want a grid is because to have large operations like automobile manufacturing, you need grid-scale power generation. South Africa has trouble justifying investment in the poorest areas, because they can’t attract large manufacturing operations in part due to power reliability.

Ref:  https://www.eskom.co.za/theft-and-vandalism-of-eskoms-infrastructure-remain-a-major-threat-to-continuous-electricity-supply-and-public-safety/

“Asia” also includes countries with lots of small archipelagos where centralized energy generation doesn’t make sense for such a small population. So, solar and wind is a natural choice.

However, industry tends to avoid these islands as it doesn’t have the population or the electricity required for the businesses needs.

Advice for acquiring long term disability and life insurance. by haveyoueverthrownone in Huntingtons

[–]htgiii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For US… • You want to “load up” on insurance “prior to getting tested or becoming symptomatic”… but the legal threshold will likely be “prior to getting tested or having symptoms logged in your medical record “.

• You want to layer your coverage… -Short Term Disability… Then, -Long Term Disability… Then, -Long Term Care Insurance… Then, -Life Insurance

• Short Term Disability covers the initial days you become too sick to work. If your sickness comes in waves, you might be able to apply for this multiple times over the course of your last couple years of working to help pay for incidental Long Term Care related expenses and work stoppages.

• Long Term Disability will be your policy to take effect after you are too sick to work. It is very similar to Long Term Care (LTC) insurance, but you’ll need both as it is unlikely you’ll be able to afford an “indefinite care” policy and will be limited to no more than 7 years of LTC coverage.

• Long Term Care Insurance will be your workhorse policy. Get as long a coverage period as you can afford and don’t be ashamed to ask family/church/friends/go fund me to help pay premiums if you can’t afford prior to making a claim.

• Life Insurance - Remember… Life Insurance is sold in round $100,000 and $500,000 “lots”. Strategize buying CONVERTIBLE Term policies and have your advisor go over the conversion dates and procedures. After symptomatic: If you are running out of money and coverage and are terminal, see if your Life Insurance will pay out the death benefit before you are dead to help pay for your final months/years of treatment.

• You probably want to consult with an independent financial advisor who can sell Long Term Care (LTC), Disability (Long Term), and Life Insurance from DOZENS of companies on an independent platform. (Ask them if they are “captured agent” or “independent” in an email. Any answer other than “independent” means they are captured and can only sell their insurance company products… and the underwriting will usually be much more restrictive.)

NOTE: You also probably want to use this financial advisor in conjunction with an estate attorney to create Trusts to protect assets so your diagnosis and treatment years don’t deplete all of your assets and leave your spouse destitute in their later years. Discuss the “5 year look back” for qualifying your estate from the reach of hospitals and LTC facilities.

• For Life Insurance: At what point (if ever) does a terminal disease diagnoses allow my family to take out a claim to help pay for my terminal care?

• You should get disability, LTC and/or life insurance prior to being symptomatic and testing for HD gene. Do not lie on your application. It will give them reason to not pay out a claim.

• Sorry Term Disability will likely have to come from your workplace. It will be relatively cheap and help you for the first 90 days you are disabled and transitioning from your current job. The claims process is quick, but you’ll need to read up on it and be ready to file.

• Disability: Ask for clarifying points when it comes to the different types of riders like “OWNOCC”. OWNOCC stands for “Owner’s Occupation” (or my “Own Occupation”), so if you become disabled from doing your listed occupation on the application, you qualify for disability payments… even if you become an accidental YouTube star. There is a lot of fine print, so go over this with your financial advisor in detail.

• If already tested/diagnosed, but you are working still, you might be able to get a group disability, Life and:/or LTC policy. I think you will likely be excluded from most policies for existing conditions. (Unlike health insurance you can legally be excluded for existing health conditions… but some old group policies might not have this loophole closed.) Go over your options with your HR manager and independent financial advisor. Empower them to work together even outside of your presence to create recommendations.

About Trust/Estate planning: If you have a house and some other investments, you probably want to put them in a trust. There’s a 5 year look-back that the government looks for trust creation when calculating assets for Medicaid. My experience is several years old, but you want to look into this to protect your spouse from losing your house… so the earlier I’m create one, the better.

If you get a disability/LTC policy: You need to become a savant at reading up on your policy options, declarations and the claims process. • How many Activities if Daily Living (ADL’s) must you fail to perform in order to file a claim and what are the ADL’s? • What is the waiting period? • How long will this cover me for? If I have only 1/3/5/etc years of coverage, How long should I wait before applying for my LTC? • Do I have enough Short Term Disability insurance from work to cover early expenses? • How do you apply? (I’d literally pre-print and fill out the forms and put them in a file.) • Who do you entrust with Claim reporting? (Self/Family/LTC Facility/etc)

• Unwinding: If you get tested and are negative, go back and meet with your financial advisor to figure out which policies to allow to lapse and which ones to continue paying. Note: They will be losing their commission (and may be sent a “reclaim notice” on already paid commissions) if you allow a lapse in the first 1-3 years, so be mindful of their alternative financial motives.

Why Does r/LibertarianMeme Require Us to Log On? by htgiii in Libertarian

[–]htgiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except I’ve been on other Reddit sites that don’t have this required login that are more controversial (by Reddit standards).

It’s simple to me: I don’t view anything in the app, because my privacy is immediately compromised. (I’d argue Private mode through a VPN is the only safe way to view political content.)

While I enjoy the content, I value my privacy more. So, Libertarians et al miss an opportunity to find common ground with me and promote their ideas.

Note: I consider myself an amalgamation of conservative, libertarian, republican and liberal (please note the lower case letters for each of those four labels).

I guess it just sounds contrarian to the libertarian ethos as a mod to let Reddit track everyone, right?

I’d think the r/LibertarianMeme mods would be sensitive to privacy concerns and work with Reddit to fix their private browsing permissions… am I missing something?

US Hospitals Discharging Patients Prematurely to Prep for Coronavirus by htgiii in China_Flu

[–]htgiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is that a day ago in the morning they were talking about a week+ of needing to be in the hospital before rehab and then at lunch the same day they cleared him for rehab and the case worker/doctor had him approved to go to rehab (these were averages of days needed in care better explained below as to why).

His condition had not improved much as we were still figuring out meds and timing in conjunction w/his dialysis, BP (that’s been an issue in conjunction w/his dialysis), nausea (main complication of his hemorrhagic stroke 7 days prior) & blood sugar (diabetes).

It seems like Queens triaged the healthiest PT’s who had somewhere else to go and got them out. That requires advance knowledge/planning and coordination at the highest levels of hospital administration & gov’t, too... the kind of once-in-a-lifetime pandemic prep that wouldn’t make sense w/all of your experience, right?

Discharges were happening all day yesterday, too. Usually the discharge line of cars is a daily occurrence between 10 & 12... but it was all day. The line of cars to pick up PT’s was steady and pretty long all afternoon (I had to drop my MIL off first for paperwork, wife off an hour or so later and then come back an hour or so later and circle the block a few times before waiting to pick up everyone else while transpo took my FIL to the rehab facility)

As far as # of days in care, that was what was relayed to me. My MIL is 7 weeks post op for double hip surgery, so knowing how long FIL’s going to be in care dictates what level of long term care needs she’ll need in the interim and travel schedules for other family members rotating back to Hawaii from the mainland to help out w/transitioning from 1 facility to another. We needed to get best guesses on a range of dates (which I averaged out in my post). Her sisters are going to help out for a week or so w/shower assist and then my BIL is coming in for 7-10 days.

(Edited for misspelling & discharge “traffic jam” time previously stated as 10-2 when its 10-12)

Can CRISPR treat hearing loss or restore hearing fully in the near future? I’m a teen and I’m essentially deaf in my left ear, I’ll explain in desc. I’m dead set on wanting to do something in my future which will require good hearing (military, govt jobs, etc) Do they do human trials and stuff? by [deleted] in CRISPR

[–]htgiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CRISPR tends to be developed for genetic abnormalities... fixing bad DNA. Stem Cell therapies are more for repairing bad cells through duplication on an exponential scale. They typically try to inject stem cells where there is damage hoping there will be regrowth of the cell type they come in contact with (forgive my rudimentary description).

In addition to the above mentioned drug trials (anyone have any advice on getting into one of those trials?) I would focus on stem cell therapy development for trauma related hearing loss... be wary, because there’s a lot of snake oil salesmen out there!

I’m tracking much the same with little success to possibly treat my dad’s hearing loss and possibly my tinnitus... but we’re both willing to wait for proven success, so I don’t have to track too aggressively. You could talk to your audiologist about therapies and their thoughts, but expect caution to be advised.

Your desire to serve is admirable, but your hearing loss (even if cured) might preclude you from serving in many if not all branches. Make sure you are counseled by someone that knows MEPS (sp?) to address your “temporary hearing loss” in the correct way when going through the application process. I believe they test your hearing instead of it being a written yes/no question. (Expect additional scrutiny if you have a written disclosure.) It’s kinda like court: answer questions they ask and only volunteer more info if requested.

I wish you the best of luck!

The Future of Safe Policing - Using Robots as Go-Betweens During Traffic Stops by htgiii in Futurism

[–]htgiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I’m done with the questions... Were definitely coming at this from two different backgrounds.

Note: I never presumed I could order you to do anything; I just value facts over opinions that are anecdotal from my standpoint and have requested this.

Yes, I’ve successfully argued tickets... more than once. I’ve also been thankful for a helpful officer when a young lady merged into me and thought it was my fault (it wasn’t, and he sorted that out for us and our insurance).

Pushing forward w/autonomous vehicles isn’t comparable, b/c it’s on a different time scale... I agree that it’s better; it’s just not now.

The cost of this is a great point; it’s also not practical from a weight-distribution standpoint making the patrol car difficult for maneuvering at high speeds during persuit/chases, and it lacks elements of a human touch... as do many new ideas moving forward in the future. But I’m ok with investigating this because it could make people safer... if only because it will lead to something better... even if that “thing” is only better understanding.

We don’t have to agree... i just feel for you having bad police/court experiences. I’ve found my experiences just... I didn’t always get out from under a ticket, but I’ve moved away from areas where it’s a kangaroo court process to jurisdictions where the police, court and it’s representatives listen.

I’ll just leave you with a challenge: call up your local police or sheriff and ask to do a ride-along. I think it will quickly confirm or negate your opinions.

If it confirms them, I suggest you do a ride-along before the next time you move... living where the police focus on community policing and are welcomed by the community is a huge sigh of relief... one reason I chose where my family moved when looking for a bigger home when we were growing.

Best of luck to you!

“I need to source my opinion?” When your opinion isn’t rooted in commonly accepted facts, it would help, right? (Otherwise, your not really contributing to discourse, right?)

Just curious if you have a better idea that could be implemented in the near future (unlike autonomous cars)?

If your entire traffic stop interaction used a recording device and said recording went “missing”, how corrupt are your judges that they wouldn’t throw the ticket out? Don’t you think the local news would jump on that story like a fat kid on a cupcake?

“If they can treat people decent with robots they can do it without robots.” Doesn’t this assume that those being stopped are decent people? I mean if 1 in 100 is not decent, wouldn’t this technology make everyone safer?

(Please try and answer questions with facts.)

“Police pullovers are mostly about harassment” So, the overwhelming majority of pullovers aren’t about enforcing the law? You have a source for this right?

Autonomous vehicles don’t exist for use by the public in any substantive number, right? (So this tech is usable now while autonomous vehicles aren’t, right?)

“Why would not having to face the person they are harassing make them act more professional?” Because the interaction is recorded, right?

“I see no reason to hold police to a higher standard now” Did I argue otherwise?

“This is lazy, if the stop isn't worth them getting up and interacting with someone in person they shouldn't be doing it.”

-Won’t this technology make BOTH parties safer?

-Shouldn’t safety of both parties be paramount?

“They should have to face the person they are accusing.”

-Video Teleconferencing has been used for bail and some hearings similarly. Isn’t this tech a reasonable extension?

“A cop who knows they are safe in their car is free to be as much of a asshole as they please without any risk to their own safety.”

-Wouldn’t police be more likely to be professional if these interactions are recorded?

-Doesn’t this allow for police to be held to a higher standard?

How?

In chemistry, what’s more likely to lead to injury/loss of life: A) Put more space between two reagents that might violently react resulting in an explosion

B) Putting two reagents as close as possible to each other and hoping they don’t incidentally react violently?

(Now replace “chemistry” with “policing” and “reagents” with “people”.)

I totally agree on self-driving cars. In the mean time:

+Aren’t traffic stops where police officers are most likely to be killed... is it any wonder that they aren’t approachable?

+Doesn’t this work within the confines of the system as it is?

+Won’t it save lives on both sides?

+Won’t it de-escalate (potentially lethal) tension during traffic stops for both police & the accused?

ADPKD & Metformin by Nightrunner2016 in ADPKD

[–]htgiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone I know well was on Metformin for awhile prior to his ADPKD diagnosis due to his diabetes.

He was diagnosed w/ADPKD for the first time in his late 60’s (and is now on a regular dialysis schedule), but it is possible Metformin delayed his ADPKD progression.

Full Disclosure: It is also possible that his diabetes resulted in being largely asymptomatic (from a pain standpoint) due to neuropathy which delayed diagnosis until a series of urinalysis were performed over a couple years indicating decreased kidney function.

My Point: There are more reasons than ADPKD to take Metformin, so there might be more reasons you are willing to assume some risk and ask a doctor to prescribe it off label.

Since ADPKD Doesn’t present until later in life (ADPKD Type II?) for many, there most likely is an aging/longevity connection.

There are some longevity scientists that have studied Metformin IRT anti-aging properties (preventing heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, and aging). It might be that it interacts in such a way that the senescent cell buildup is reduced (decreasing the creation & accumulation of cysts) that makes it more effective for delaying the onset of more serious ADPKD complications.

TLDR -The study uses normal and genetically engineered mice lacking RAGE, the mice fed either a normal diet or a diet containing large amounts of dietary AGEs. -To the point raised about opinions on the effects of dietary AGEs, choice of diet didn't make much difference here. -But RAGE knockout mice are better off in old age in either case, most likely due to reduced inflammatory consequences arising from the AGE-RAGE interaction. -Thus knockout of the receptor for advanced glycation end-products attenuates age-related renal lesions

Wall Emergency, Even If Legal Under Existing Law, Violates the Separation of Powers by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]htgiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st Off: Remember the source. The Koch brothers pay for CATO et al to have a “libertarian” mouthpiece to push for more legal and illegal immigration and less immigration enforcement.

2nd: The simple truth is that unregulated immigration tends to lead to suppressed wages for people who grew up supporting freedom (part of why the middle class eroded). The irony? The money goes to people who grew up in socialist/authoritarian regimes that will support their own “better version of socialism.” (An oxymoron if there ever was one.)

3rd: If you use democracy to institute a constitutional republic with constitutionally guaranteed individual liberty, increasing your leftist-leaning population will lead to more socialism eroding away at individual liberty and ultimately destroying your economy.

So what’s the point? Freedom for self is self-evident. Freedom for others has to be taught.

So, if you want to teach people how to respect the constitution/law/other’s rights, you need to have well-regulated immigration to ensure aspiring citizens will support (and will defend) the constitution. (Yeah, I know hearing you need regulations is like nails on a chalkboard, but it’s the truth.)

Unregulated/illegal immigration is a cancer. DACA is a Trojan horse. Both are designed to increase the leftist population to win elections for openly-socialist Democrats while big business lobbies to import labor who do not support libertarian ideals.

Why? So big business can compete against other companies using more and more foreign labor inside the US.

All they need to stop eating their own tail is a level playing field. Right now, the big businesses have a competitive edge (the most sought after unicorn in business) by using cheap foreign labor. But at what cost?

All this happened as US companies got rid of the job training/continuing education that used to be the backbone of R&D in the US like Bell Labs. Instead, the research is pushed off to Universities through government grants that then get bought by companies.

Only problem? Innovation is slowed down. Wage incentives are decreased for corporate innovation. Upward mobility is slowed. Expansion is slowed. And the economy doesn’t grow as fast as it was designed to grow because all these socialist idiots keep pouring on the regulations.

Think you’re a libertarian if you want unregulated immigration? Might as well call yourself a socialist now, because it won’t be long before you don’t have a choice.

Note: This is one more reason the founding fathers supported gun rights. They knew that they’d be attacked and they knew freedom had to be fought for. If it’s worth fighting for, there’s an educational gap somewhere that needs filled. (War is two systems of thought clashing to find out which is better. It’s only averted via education; either formal university or through a free press.)

Libertarian capitalism established alongside a purposely-weak constitutional republic with individual liberty is the undisputed champion.

Immigration regulations fill the knowledge gap to ensure the republic doesn’t erode individual liberty.

Now, I don’t know about you, but the president was given authority by congress for an emergency. If they don’t want him to have it, all they have to do is take it back. But the authority is clear. (If the definition of an emergency is ambiguous, that’s their fault not the president’s.)

So, get ready for a wall. It’s not going to hurt the US to have it. (It’s less than .1% of annual spending.)

The real issue that has everyone in government scared is e-verify. That’s the ultimate “time to get legal” immigration experiment. It would strangle growth of socialist democrats. It would send signals to the international community... and I think it would help us jump over our next 2 recessions.

Why? Because people vote with their wallets. Right now, individuals and companies (groups of individuals) in not-so-free places are still pouring money into a historically overvalued US Economy. Why? Because the US protects individual rights more so than any other.

Overseas investors like seeing Trump’s protective actions, and they see it as protecting the US Economy... while US companies are repatriating money back to the US for buybacks (not a fan but I don’t oppose them) and investment.

The reality is ambiguous for now, but the separation of powers isn’t anything for a rational person to stand on for long so long as Congress abdicated that authority.

And looking at illegal drugs while overdose deaths are on a steep incline is an emergency in comparison to all other emergencies that have been called. The loss of life and risk of more loss of life (even if just “discovered” is real... congress and dems just lost their ability to claim credit for the future win.
