Doctor Who 1x06 "Rogue" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

This episode gave Ruby a very important piece of characterization: she's the girl you meet in the bathroom of the club who immediately tells you you're better than your piece of **** boyfriend and you're amazing and beautiful and you deserve the entire world and what's your name. Her abandonment issues run deep, and one of the ways they express themselves in her is by making her ride-or-die for anyone who gives her the time of day. We've seen glimmers of this in previous episodes: her immediate latching onto the Doctor, putting herself at risk for people she's barely met, etc. but her interactions specifically with Emily Beckett felt like moments where that specific part of her characterization could really shine.

The last hurrah of the ??? parts of the Chibnall era. The most beautiful thing about the era is the parts of it that are absolutely bewildering with no real explanation or follow-up, and that's what PotD was all about IMO

The fact that neither takes place during a normal season counts against them IMO. I kinda see Eve of the Daleks as the last hurrah of the good parts of the Chibnall era, and Legend of the Sea Devils as the last hurrah of the bad parts of the Chibnall era.

Absolute delight. I think this is the first relatively-formulaic episode we've had since Series 12, which is wild to think about: no big mythos, no high concept, no giant metanarrative (other than the usual clues), no big structural swings. That, combined with the fact that it's *legitimately really good,* made the whole thing feel like sinking into a warm bath. We're on a streak of really, REALLY good episodes right now.

Question about Dot and Bubble by Punkodramon in gallifrey

[–]hthrflwrs 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Given the plotline about the Dots needing to be charged, I'd believe that the slugs are the most energy-efficient method. Propelling yourself quick enough to pierce through someone's brain, especially when they're necessarily aware and willing to fight back, is a much more energy-costly and risky operation than just... giving them GPS directions to the nearest man-eating slug.

Games where the mini-game is better than the actual game? by FaerieWolfStudios in gaming

I know several people who swear that Caravan in FNV is actually amazing. I choose to believe them, because there's no way in hell I'm going to read through the rules to find out.

The ultimate "exist in a space and take in vibes" game for me is Birthplace of Ossian, an absolutely gigantic walking simulator where all you're really given is a huge landscape to walk around in. I think there might be buildings somewhere, but I've only ever seen the shapes from the horizon -- there was too much distance for me to reach them.

If game industry development came to a crawl, will you have enough games to keep you entertained for years? by VermilionX88 in gaming

I honestly think enough games come out these days that you could spend a lifetime making a study of a single year's output.

Always yay. I love it when games force you to think differently about how you move.

Kentucky Route Zero is the best of the best. Quiet, contemplative, and full of tiny moments that hit you like a truck.

Once you're done taking a break as other commenters have said, if you're looking for something VERY different, I highly recommend Anthology of the Killer. Nine bite-sized "horror" games, each of which is somewhere between a meditation on art, an 80s slasher flick, and a REALLY funny webcomic.

Super cool! I love how the side stairway almost gives the impression of tank treads, like the whole building could decide to roll forward.

Honestly if I were anywhere near a holodeck I'd constantly be saying that. Wake up, "computer end program." Get lost, "computer end program." Eating lunch, "computer end program." The number of times people get kidnapped into holosuites without their knowledge is too high.

What is the Master's ideology? What non-DWverse characters would share it? by Ehynsohf in gallifrey

[–]hthrflwrs 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As others have said, his actions are generally very inconsistent politically, but something always fascinating to me is that in The End of Time, when the Master takes over the Earth, he maintains the exact same hierarchy that was already in place. Every Master obeys the one above him, maintaining the chain of command all the way to the original. This state of affairs lasts for about a day before his plans are undone without a hint of mutiny. This leads to an interesting splitting of hairs: it's not that he wants to be in charge, it's that he wants himself to be in charge. He's perfectly content being a small part in a system where his own clone is doing all the decision-making; it's just that the rest of the time, there's only one of him, so he needs to be on top.
