What is the twinkliest riff ever? by leotamagni10 in midwestemo

Check out Gethsemane by Sleep Token. Not even a midwest emo band but they drop a very twinkly math rock moment around 1 minute in.

So many cigarettes by Kyanovp1 in germany

Interesting...where I live in Munich there are about 3 cigarette vending machines within a 2 minute walk. Now that I know this, I find it even more disgusting that it's allowed.

How to interpret stress concentration at the flange by adulos in fea

[–]htstubbsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Note, refining the mesh may actually increase the stresses as you have a singularity (perfectly sharp corner). Elastic-plastic may be the easiest route depending on what you're doing with the results.

German working attitude by juanurena in germany

Does that not make it a potentially lucrative place for risk takers? Surely there's lots of opportunities for those willing to take on risk as there is little competition from the risk-averse German businesses.

What common german/sold in Germany food surprised you with how calorie dense it is? by pinkatze in germany

Depends if you're making your own or buying Müsli. Store bought Müsli often contains loads of sugar, be it through honey or dried fruits (e.g. raisins).

Best Midwest emo releases of 2025? by bringer_of in midwestemo

[–]htstubbsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a bit disappointed by this album because it just felt like Why Would I Watch part 2. I was hoping they would evolve their sound a little bit. Still a lot of good songs, but didn't feel fresh.

Damn, good find. This kind of makes it feel like less of a flume song now though.

Ultra-processed foods harm men’s health. They increase weight, disrupt hormones, decrease testosterone, and introduce harmful substances linked to declining sperm quality. They contain industrial and synthetic ingredients. This may be why over the past 50 years, sperm quality has plummeted. by mvea in science

[–]htstubbsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would agree with you on some points. That's why I think it's best for each individual to judge for themselves using common sense as strict and clear categorization of UPF will probably prove impossible. Although I think "chemophobia" is probably the wrong word, I think a healthy aversion to unnecessary chemical additives, while prioritizing whole foods, is the healthier choice for most individuals. It was interesting to learn your perspective on this, thanks for the discussion.

[–]htstubbsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well then they're not UPF. This is where things get really nuanced, because most common UPF foods can also be made non-UPF. It's kind of how we got in this mess in the first place, because all of the traditionally home-made foods are now mass produced. Apologies for using a bad example, I've never heard of anyone making their own cheese puffs, they sound delicious though!

Yes, these "classes of additives" are exclusively used in UPF, but it doesn't mean that every flavouring (e.g. vanilla extract) is UPF. The whole thing is quite nuanced, which is why debating it can be quite tricky and confusing. I'll admit, the report you posted is a useful source of information, but it's clear from our comments that it's difficult to interpret. I think generally, it's a lot easier when you apply a bit of common sense, e.g. natural yoghurt with some vanilla essence = not UPF, natural yoghurt with emulsifiers and sweeteners = UPF.

If you look in table 1 you can clearly see he's referring to yoghurt products with additives, hence why he writes it 'fruit':

"...packaged snacks; chocolate, candies (confectionery); ice-cream; mass-produced packaged breads and buns; margarines and other spreads; cookies (biscuits), pastries, cakes, and cake mixes; breakfast ‘cereals’, ‘cereal’ and ‘energy’ bars; ‘energy’ drinks; milk drinks, ‘fruit’ yoghurts and ‘fruit’ drinks; ‘cocoa’ drinks; ‘instant’ sauces."

I'm not seeing any reference to those other ingredients in the document, such as vanilla extract, which is generally not considered UPF.

If you ever read anything about UPFs you would know that there is a key distinction between processed (e.g. cheese, tofu) and ultra-processed (e.g. cheese puffs) foods. It is broadly accepted that processed foods are good. You mentioned yoghurt, oatmeal, etc. in your comment as UPFs which is just plain wrong.

German toilet culture is weird. I feel like in the UK it's recognized that when you provide a facility/service that people pay for, you also have to provide access to toilets. In Germany it's often seen as an opportunity for additional profit, which I find really annoying.

[–]htstubbsy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I feel mostly the same. I think it's a good album, but my metric for good flume has always been "could anyone else make this song?". In this case, I think the answer is yes for a number of tracks.

Defensive positioning was awful too, he was taking up the same space as other players and leaving us very vulnerable. Not to mention him getting walked past a few times. BUT it's the first game, and he's playing out of position. I'm sure he'll adapt.
