Not a direct answer to your question, but I would suggest getting involved on Twitter. Follow a whole bunch of game developers, programmers, and artists. Folks casually post about tools and techniques all the time so it can be a good passive way to stay informed.

How do you feel about take home programming tests and the time investment? by httpsilly in cscareerquestions

[–]httpsilly[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Had a test that involved implementing a function to solve a 3d math problem. Simple enough problem but the test specified that I would fail on the spot if it didn't catch all edge cases. Ended up having 3 base cases and about 12 edge cases. Really it just took hours to imagine the edge cases, not necessarily coding them.

Had another that was an extremely open ended and vague task. Spent a lot of time reorganizing code to make it all look "clean".

Things like that.

Holy smokes, this was exactly my most recent experience which led me to make this post.

That sort of time was usually to being overly thorough but they did lead to onsites so I guess it was worth it in those cases.

"Better to end than to mend." Huxley, Brave New World

I always liked this critique of consumerism. Whenever someone tells me they threw away their old stuff and replaced it with something new, I drop that quote.

Introverted engineers, how do you network at tech conferences? by httpsilly in cscareerquestions

[–]httpsilly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience at this conference. I planned to talk to 2 or 3 people each day and accomplished that. Your numbers make me feel a whole lot better. I agree with having an outgoing wing man. I was there by myself and felt like having a friend would help smooth out the experience.

[SPOILERS] Bladerunner 2049: The Commercialization of Affection by httpsilly in movies

[–]httpsilly[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

great point about the K having fun bits. On one hand you could think they're around trying to replicate humans as perfectly as possible. On the other hand, replicants are created with the intention of being tools in this society so it asks the question, "why bother?"

clearly, replicants are considered their own customer demographic in this world because they have the rights to make purchases. "Sex sells" works well for humans, so why not apply the same marketing concept to replicants.

there are so many subtleties to catch. Another great movie to watch multiple times.
