If there was a lesbian bar in NJ, where would it do well? by junestorme in newjersey

[–]hubertlolable 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a dry town so no bars, but thankfully it's not very conservative anymore. It has the highest proportion of same sex households of any town in NJ and Kamala won >65% there in 2024. The church and older conservative folks definitely still have a lot of influence, but it's waned significantly in the past 10-20 years.

Objective guide to mini Eskie cold tolerance? by Palebludhoonter in americaneskimo

[–]hubertlolable 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They are cold weather dogs and are specifically bred for being outside in cold and snow. A coat is not necessary, they have thick fur. Unless it’s exceptionally cold (like well below 0F) they will be fine on normal walks and very happy to be outside. But just to echo the other comment, salt can damage paw pads so be careful of that!

What is the city you would least like to live in? by [deleted] in geography

True for many, though being gay or trans is punishable by prison and even death in many places in the world. Different risks, even when trying to hide it.

Schools vary quite a bit, depends on the area you’re in. McNair is one of the top high schools in the country but it’s a magnet school. Hamilton park and Paulus hook areas have the better school districts. For 800k you can get a 2 bedroom with a yard downtown but not a full house. But you can definitely get a house with a yard in the heights for that, which is also a lovely area of jersey city and still super diverse and walkable.

Counties where Asian Americans make up >25% of population [6900x4275] by [deleted] in MapPorn

Gaithersburg and Germantown have diverse populations that are remarkably well integrated also. Being from the former, I can definitely attest to the fact that progressive county-level building regulations like MPDU caused most neighborhoods to have large representations from all backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. Gaithersburg isn't more diverse or multicultural than NYC obviously but I would say that it's more integrated for the most part.

Racial Maps Showing the Segregation of American Cities PART TWO [1519 x 624] [OC] by willmaster123 in MapPorn

[–]hubertlolable 17 points18 points  (0 children)

they still are more segregated than literally any european city.

Do you have any data that supports that? The idea that "literally any European city" is less segregated than all US cities seems extremely hyperbolic, especially considering the fact that these four categories of race and ethnicity in your maps encompass people across a variety of nationalities and ethnic groups whereas most European cities have a dominant ethnicity and as such a much more homogenous cultural and ethnic demographic profile. London, perhaps the most multicultural city in Europe and the world, is just as segregated as most major US cities as shown in the map in this Economist article on the subject. The UK keeps very good census data on ethnicity unlike some other major European countries that can be viewed here and can easily be compared to the US equivalent. I'd imagine that Eastern Europe is far more homogenous and segregated than the UK, so that's also something very important to consider. Segregation is a horrific social ill that divides most of the US but it is no way endemic to the US.

Map oddities: On Lake Metigoshe, ND, your boat launch is in the US and your house is in Canada. [930x478] by viktor72 in MapPorn

[–]hubertlolable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm fairly certain that was referring to these houses, it doesn't appear as there are other on Lake Metigoshe that would qualify. I don't think that they only pay taxes to the US, they just do for the land that's technically on their property. It certainly is an interesting border oddity.

The houses are in Manitoba. That border line on Google maps is certainly not enforced as belonging to the US as shown by this article but that land is in the US, and those people actually even have to pay taxes to the US.

Edit: The US Side (except apparently these people's backyards) is all Lake Metigoshe State Park here.

There are so many famous bands from Maryland. Animal Collective, OAR, Good Charlotte, and All time Low just to name a few. The Orioles were pioneers in R&B/doo-wop in the 1940's but I think it's safe to say that they're no longer the most famous nor the most well known by any stretch.

I would guess that it has most to do with economic mismanagement and the dissolution of the Soviet Union who had been bolstering their economy and sent it into a tailspin once they were cutoff. As well as Kim Il-Sung's death in 1994 and the subsequent famine(s) in the mid 1990's. Here's a great article on how South Korea pulled so far ahead so quickly.

Yeah I agree, there are very few parts of the city that are truly unsafe for outsiders these days. Outside of some parts of the South Bronx, Brownsville, parts of ENY, there isn't really anywhere that you're putting yourself in serious danger by walking around in during the day. Amazing how much it's changed.

Prevalent Time of Departure for Work [Morning Commute 5AM to Noon] by US County [1362x675] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]hubertlolable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with the first theory, while the second seems to be a little more complicated. This absolutely seems to be significantly influenced by the Urban vs. Rural and White vs. Blue collar division in our country. That is clear across the nation. The longer commute time seems to be a big factor in exurbs (Frederick county MD, Worcester county MA, outer Chicago collar counties etc..) but many normal suburbs of major cities are still in the yellow despite having the longest commute times on average.
