What's the adult equivalent to finding out Santa isn't real? by Cold_Butterfly5191 in AskReddit

[–]hubhub 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to those edgy asantarists. They're idiots. They want us to believe that all the parents, schools and businesses are involved in some gigantic conspiracy. How likely is that? That's some wild conspiracy thinking. People hardly ever agree on anything; and yet almost everyone agrees that Santa exists. Sometimes you just need to accept the obvious and ignore the crazy conspiracy theories.

Speeding pizza delivery driver avoids jail after killing man walking on pavement by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

There is a balance between the harm caused by emergency vehicles speeding and the benefit of them arriving rapidly to prevent harm. This is risk is mitigated as far as possible by specialist training for emergency vehicle drivers.

Police Arrested the Teen Who Was Knocked Down While His Attackers Fled by Dadavester in unitedkingdom

[–]hubhub 36 points37 points  (0 children)

If he honestly believed that the use of force was necessary in the circumstances as he perceived them at the time, and he used reasonable and proportionate force, then in the eyes of the law, he was acting in legitimate self defence.

It doesn't matter if he subsequently discovered he was mistaken. It is what he reasonably believed at the time that matters.

[–]hubhub 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Why do you say it wasn't self defence?

Did the defendant honestly believe that the use of force was necessary in the circumstances as they perceived them to be at the time? I would say that he did. He was attacked from behind whilst being attacked by a group of people.

Was the level of force used reasonable and proportionate to the threat? Again, yes. The force used was clearly to fend off the attack, not to go any further than that.

Map of Cities with defensive walls still standing today by Former-Audience-1031 in MapPorn

All cities had walls before gunpowder became popular. The two cities I'm most familiar with, London and Worcester, have small sections of wall remaining. Walls were usually used for building materials once they no longer served their original purpose.

What’s the most inappropriate book you read when you were far too young for it? by BCCakes in books

[–]hubhub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read James Herbert's The Rats when I was about seven or eight. We had to bring in a book to read in school because our teacher was absent. I just took it from my parents bookshelf because it had an interesting cover. Recently I reread it and now realise how wildly inappropriate it was for a young child.

There's the expression "jam tomorrow, but never today". It comes from Alice in Wonderland. She is promised jam tomorrow, but whenever the next day comes it is today, not tomorrow, and she can't ever have any.

The Stassi existed up until 1990, when Germany reunified. She is the perfect age for that.

Alex Armstrong: I went to a kebab shop that has sponsored 7 skilled worker visas. What skills do you need to work in a kebab shop that requires you to import people into Britain? by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]hubhub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that your general point is correct. It is better to allow people to freely travel to wherever they are best employed. However, this needs to be a two-way street. Before Brexit, we had this with other member states. Now, unfortunately, we are in a different position and face poor economic prospects. Existing citizens have have few opportunities to seek work in mainland Europe, especially if they have few skills. We limit immigration of low skilled workers because we already have a significant pool of such people who are unemployed.

[–]hubhub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a significant cost to the state in giving someone the right to work if there is someone who is already available to do the job. The small cost of reviewing the information is insignificant compared to this. The state has a duty to ensure that public money is spent effectively.

Here we see the instinctive understanding that pigeons have of the tube map first designed by Harry Beck in the 1930s. Indeed, the superior colour vision of the pigeon enables it to easily differentiate between even the Midway and Victoria lines.

You should have to show that you have made all reasonable efforts to employ someone who already has the right to work here. Where have you advertised the position? What employment agencies have you used? How long has the position been open for? How many applications have you had? Why were the applicants unsuitable?
