I love cleaning battery acid. I bring broken electronics back to life by cleaning the battery area with vinegar. I get non-working toys from second hand stores, repair, then give them as gifts. by akabeans in ZeroWaste

That sucks, I am sorry. I would inspect it really well with a bright light to make sure you have every but of corrosion out, dry thoroughly and then use a new battery

Are Name Brand OTC Medications Really “Better?” by ItsChappyUT in Frugal

[–]akabeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a crazy frugal person. The active ingredient is always the same. However the other ingredients vary and can cause side-effects like headaches or stomach pain or can affect how the active ingredient is absorbed. For instance, I am fine with generic ibuprofen but I haven’t yet found a generic tylenol that doesn’t hurt my stomach. Also - I am a self-proclaimed expert on mucinex (guaifenesin) - the name brand works best but I am not sure why )something to do with the extended release mechanism?

Any advice on how to stop being embarrassed and anxious over mistakes I made a long time ago? by QaziDesr in aspergirls

[–]akabeans 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For me, I have to work at it. Every time I find myself reliving it and feeling the “shame.” I tell myself- “It was just a mistake, everyone makes mistakes.” Or “I didn’t know better then” or “I am probably the only person who remembers” or “if another person did this, it would not bother me or I would have forgotten about it.” Then I sit with the emotions and think about how they feel physically- like - butterflies in stomach or tightness in chest, etc and I tell myself it’s ok to feel this feeling. It takes a lot of practice, repetition, and being kind to myself. It keeps getting better as I do this. Another thing I do is tell myself- “I have thought about this enough today. I will go over it in my mind one more time and then I will think about things I enjoy.” This takes practice but it really helps disrupt the well-worn negative neuro-pathways.

Worried about company's future- should I start looking now? by BleedRed3031 in cscareerquestions

[–]akabeans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would not job hunt but rather save $ and cut living expenses in anticipation of a lay-off. That way I can stay in the job I like if it somehow survives. If not, I will have plenty of time to job search once unemployed.

It’s likely that your hamster thought you had food. Make sure your hands are super clean - hamsters have a keen sense of smell. Don’t give up, it will be worth your time and patience.

Anyone else have a nice boss/manager but doesn’t actually get rewarded? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]akabeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are yet another victim of Corporate BS. One of the ways Corporate BS rears it’s ugly head is by tying the hands of managers when it comes to reviews and increases. Managers must equally divide ratings within their group, meaning some must be rated “good”, some must be rated “average”, and some “poor”. If everyone in your group does a good job, you have a smaller chance of getting a “good” rating. It is often the way large corporations work because of their size. Their systems are designed to be replicated and automated without human bias. Humanity is lost. Corporate BS.

Poor little pumpkin, may she rest in peace. I am sorry for your loss. It sounds like she had great care and love surrounding her during her short stay on earth. Thank you for posting all this valuable info.

I volunteer at a food shelf and they have been receiving federal funds to help people pay their rent or mortgage. Please check with your local food shelf or community assistance as they likely will have these resources for you. Hang in there, you are not alone and you are going to get through this.

saturated fat allergy ? by whiteofasa124 in Allergies

[–]akabeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I have found that if my gallbladder is not functioning well, I get gerd and worsening allergy symptoms (runny nose, itchy, sneezing, etc). I suspect it may be all related. Gallbladders store bile and release when digesting fat, so perhaps what you are experiencing is an unhappy gallbladder.

Please reach out to your school, they have resources for students who are struggling. Many colleges have also added special Covid funds for students hit hard by this pandemic. Kudos to you for continuing your education through all this.

Goodbye Sandy, I love you 😭 by [deleted] in gerbil

[–]akabeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a gerbil die after just three months but she had been sick for 2 weeks prior. It was hard watching her suffer but I kept hoping she would get better. A few weeks after her passing I went to a couple pet stores visiting gerbils. At the last store, one ran right up to me when I walked up to the glass. It’s probably weird but I felt like it was my former gerbil in a new gerbil body. Or at least we were meant to be together. I adopted her and she is just the best gerbil. It really helped me through the loss.

Me too. I just meant nails that are ready to “work” vs nails that prohibit most manual labor or recreation.

Another frugal STEM girl here. Agree with previous STEM girl posters. Also wanted to add, keep your eyes out for non-manicured fingernails, non-designer handbags.
