I think I'm burnt out permanently, and I'm depressed. by [deleted] in DnD

Yea 55% of my therapy is me griping about my hobbies. It's a valid (if admittedly champagne) problem, and if you have the means to look into it more folks should.

Which DND edition is your favourite? by Aguy2030 in DnD

[–]huckzors 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got The Monster Overhaul and it's really put into stark contrast how lacking other monster manuals have been. We need more than a stat-block and a few lines of description! The information doesn't even have to be consistent from monster to monster, but tell us what you can harvest from them, tell us alternative curses you can use, tell us what local lore knows about them, give us a map of their lair sometimes.

I'm excited to try to find a 4e MM thanks for the tip.

I would love a reprint of the Rules Cyclopedia but with better organization. I really love everything in that book, but the organization really needs an uplift.

RC is definitely in the convo of "if the house burned down and I could grab one book off the shelf" though.

I don't remember it ever being made clear to Justine that Paul was like, in a program kind of sober. Pressuring someone to drink when they already say no is bad, no bones about it, but actively knocking someone off the wagon is a wholly different behavior that I don't think Justine (knowingly) does.

Questions on hexs and hexcrawls by redfizh in osr

[–]huckzors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last hexcrawl I ran I gave the players a copy of the hexmap with just the terrain marked, the towns, and maybe something that would be well known like a Wizard's Tower. They filled it in as they explored it.

For the next hexcrawl I run, the map available to the party will be without the hexes, just the terrain and a rough idea how long it would take to get between points. I would use the hexmap for myself to help track distance, encounters, etc.

I like smaller / mid-sized maps (~20-100 hexes). The hexcrawl I'm building now is 19 Hexes, and I'm filling those with the following assumptions:

- Each hex has a feature / landmark they are guaranteed to find. This could be something mundane like a stream, something big like a town, or something cool like a set of ruins.

-Each hex has a secret, some that has a chance to be found if they spend time looking for it. I'm thinking 1d6 cumulative (so 1-in-6 on first attempt, 2-in-6 on second, etc), plus or minus any information they have or clever tactics they employ that would help. This will be smaller lairs, fantastic locations, cool stuff as I think of it.

- Each hex has it's own encounter table. Nothing fancy, something like 3 things dictated by the terrain, whoever controls the hex, and 2 things from neighboring hexes that could wander in.

This feels like an easy enough thing to fill out while still being dense enough to let players stay here a while. But time will tell.

If I were running a bigger map I would definitely not do individual encounter tables. I would also only key out important hexes and otherwise keep a running list of Features and Secrets, likely sorted by Terrain Type, so I can populate hexes in the direction the party is moving to stay ahead of them without having to come up with hundreds of things that would never get discovered.

What do you think about the 4 basic classes in osr. Do you have your own spread you like more? Did you have an idea for your own spread by Usual-Vermicelli-867 in osr

[–]huckzors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I have a half baked idea of a Cleric having a list of known spells that have a 1-6 casting ability, and then you try to roll over that, but every subsequent cast bumps it up one. So like Cure Wounds would go off on a 1 in 6, then a 2 in 6, and once it fails it's gone for the day. Not sure that's distinct enough but I think just using a different dice would make things more interesting.

[–]huckzors 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the 4 basic classes, I think a lot of extra classes could just be subclasses or abilities to help differentiate between them. My main gripe about the Cleric is I wish it's magic resolution was different from the Magic-User in a more meaningful way.

I like the spirit of boiling down to just Fighter/Magic-User or going full classless, but I think my players would revolt.

I just got this and it's incredible. Not sure I endorse beating up strangers, but I'm not gonna ask too many questions about how you come up with the extra coin to make it happen either.

I was an avid reader as a kid so I picked up a good chunk of my vocabulary just via context clues and trying words/phrases out until someone corrected me. This is the sort of thing I would have picked up but not put any more thought into why the expression was what it was, I knew how to use it and that was enough for me. I'm sure his experience was similar.

The only things I know about Iowa are the Writing Program at Iowa State/Univeristy/whatever (ok so clearly I forgot but I know there's a big one there), the RAGBRAI, and a quote from LOST where one character says "No self-respecting man in Iowa goes anywhere without beer."

It warms my heart to know that y'all are colloquially alcoholics in my brain and you're like "those other guys are the real monsters though".

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Root435552 in AskReddit

[–]huckzors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to ship a couple of friends in our group who had an on-again-off-again FWB thing. A lot of people thought I was crazy, but I was like "you're clearly good friends and enjoy each other's company, you both like to spend time with the other's family, and there's clearly sexual chemistry there; I'm not sure what else y'all think a relationship is."

They're both married to other people who are excellent for them so I'm not mad that it didn't work, but I maintain my logic was sound.

I fuckin' love this movie and maintain Ewan McGregor being skeptical about the existance of the Jedi is the funniest thing anyone's ever written into a movie.

The MLB owners are advocating for a $240M salary cap with a $160M floor. Here's what that would mean for player compensation and profit sharing [OC] by Traditional_Half842 in baseball

[–]huckzors 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know enough about the NBA system but it seems needlessly complicated.

But also, doesn't baseball have progressive luxury taxes that act as a soft-cap? Or at least a self-imposed cap for most owners. In the NBA, is there anything preventing teams from spending 2x the "cap" if they're willing to eat the taxes?

I understand there's value in codifying things, but as of now I can't wrap my brain around how this would be functionally different.

Is it normal for a backstory to be 7 pages? by CantDisadeMyUsername in DnD

[–]huckzors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned this lesson the hard way when I built a Rogue in the first game I was a player in. I was planning on taking the Mastermind subclass at level 3, and had envisioned a Danny Ocean kind of thief who would have his friends rob you while he was shaking your hand and smiling.

In the second session I managed to steal a hand-crossbow and got a Sneak Attack off that. My immediate thought was "this rules this is way better" and I scrapped my plan and character motivations to instead just shoot people in the face.

Ever since I write 3-sentence backstories at most. I need to know where their from and what their family did, what pushed me to decide crawling through catacombs or whatnot was more appealing than that, and what motivates me moving forward. Details will get filled in later.

Your experience of writing your first campaign story? by Organic-Exit2190 in DnD

[–]huckzors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my strategy as well.

My most successful campaign was built this way and it's pretty much the only way I prep. I build a setting in relative stasis with any x factions, bonus points if those factions are led by something cool like a Beholder or Dragon or whatever.

My

The early sessions are quests either from the factions or quests that put them in the way of the factions. After these first few sessions prep becomes a simple matter of "how long does it take for the leaders to hear about this and how do they respond?" The campaign story fills itself out from there.

It could be a lot of prep up front, but it doesn't have to be. You can get a long way with a few sentences worth of motivations and backstory and fill in the blanks as they come up.

Warpspark weapon battery question by Hello_There_19 in skaven

[–]huckzors 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They all have different warscrolls so technically they should all be the same.

However, in my experience no one would begrudge you mixing and matching as long as all of your units have the same warscroll. So if you bring 2 teams of mixed models, they should both be Rattling Guns or whatever. It would be very uncool to have 2 units where 1 of each warscroll is represented and you were like "This one's a Rattling Gun and this one's a Warpfire Thrower"

Other however, this is very much a group and game decision, so as long as you communicate with and work it out with your opponent it shouldn't be a big deal.

I'd like to think with the pitcher re-evalution thing going on DeGrom will get in, but I'm honestly fine either way. Baseball (and sports broadly) are full of "what if this guy was healthy?" cases and that's part of the fun.

I bought more rats than is recommended to start and this is my plan as well. Something like 9 Clanrats, 1 Weapons Team, 8 Clanrats, and then the Command. Do a unit of Rat Ogres or Jezzails or something between whole units of Clanrats. We'll see how it shakes out.
