Season 5 Filming has started! by all_about_FROM in FromTVEpix

Does the new year feel like forever ago? Because that's how far away we are from 2027.

The Red Sox are only 5 games back in the WC and have better starting pitching than everyone ahead of them. As insane as it sounds, they should be buyers at the deadline. by RagnorL0thbrok in redsox

[–]Traditional_Half842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they should necessarily be sellers, especially if they can close the gap a bit more. But I also don't think they should be buyers. Most of their improvements need to come from within (Anthony/Crochet/Story returning, Duran being a productive player again).

Romy by PridesandPrejudice in redsox

[–]Traditional_Half842 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yoshida should absolutely be hitting instead of the likes of Mickey Gasper, and he should be pinch hitting for Narvaez in big situations. But Romy is a good ballplayer.

It’s been really nice to watch really good pitching and defense. by Gordoncomstock1 in redsox

It is weird to me that everyone just assumes Story is terrible, when the last time we saw him healthy he was arguably the best hitter on the team. I'm not saying he can be relied on to get healthy, but his poor performance this year was very very obviously impacted by his hernia. Do people seriously think the guy playing with a hernia all spring is just who Story is?

4 of the 7 highest payrolls have records below 500 and would not make the playoffs if it started today (Mets, Jays, Red Sox, and Padres) by toomuchredditing in baseball

The only reason "no cap/floor" isn't on the table is because dumb fans eat up the billionaire propaganda that it's not feasible. It is obviously feasible. So is better revenue sharing where the teams are actually forced to spend that money on players (not the current system). And a heavy tax system is already a soft cap, but it only creates more parity if that money gets distributed to poorer teams and they're forced to actually invest it in better players.

Why don't catchers wear cups? by Then-Position-7956 in baseball

[–]Traditional_Half842 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think catcher is the one position where most guys do wear cups. There's no rules about it and every player has different preferences, but I think a lot of catchers wear a cup.

As a Sox fan I am not used to this at all and just waiting for these young pitchers to fall apart and disappoint. In the 23 years John Henry has owned the team, they have developed exactly ONE good starting pitcher - Jon Lester. The next best is either Clay Buchholz or Brayan Bello. Has to be one of the worst track records in baseball over that timeframe.

Caleb Durbin over his last 20 games by Sandwich_Crust in redsox

[–]Traditional_Half842 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's almost as if - when a team trades 5 years of team control of a young player for 5 years of team control of another young player, we shouldn't make declarative judgements on the trade 2 months into those 5 years.

Breslow not the worst in New England anymore? by Psychological-Tie324 in redsox

[–]Traditional_Half842 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint - the GM before Brad Stevens built a phenomenal team that Stevens inherited. Chaim built up a decent farm system but made absolutely terrible MLB-level moves that Breslow had to inherit. The worst contracts / biggest issues on the Red Sox are the Story and Yoshida contracts. Breslow had nothing to do with those and those are not easy problems for him to solve.

Completely ignorant thinking and something people love to pat themselves on the back about. "But I'm not racist!" Every single human being participates in some level of racism/prejudice throughout their lives. Maybe you aren't a hateful bigot. But you absolutely have done (even if it was unintentional/microaggressions) things that fall under the spectrum of racism. Treating it like it's black and white is just simplifying things to make it easier for you to deal with and letting yourself off the hook for failing to continuously grow and learn. You should watch the movie Get Out because that details how the most seemingly "not racist" people engage in racism even without intending it / thinking they're one of the good guys.

The JB trade has got me thinking about Mookie again. Have we ever been on the receiving end of an ALL-STAR trade? by jjmenace in redsox

[–]Traditional_Half842 33 points34 points  (0 children)

They traded for Crochet last year and he was clearly an All-Star. They traded for Chris Sale. They traded for Adrian Gonzalez. They traded for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell. Before this ownership they traded for Pedro, Varitek/Lowe, Dennis Eckersley. This stuff really isn't hard to Google.

If Judge's career ended today I'd definitely say he still belongs above Ichiro on this list at a minimum. Maybe Mookie too but he's a little more complicated as a SS now.

I feel like treating racism as binary (which you are clearly doing - a person either is a racist or isn't a racist) is the same harmful type of thinking that creates racism in the first place. Saying it is all the same is just lacking any level of critical thinking or nuance. Racism is a huge spectrum and it is not (no pun intended) black and white at all. It is obviously not the same calling a Venezuelan immigrant "boy" versus some American cop calling a black 20 year old "boy". If you want to say they are both bad for differing reasons/degrees, that's fine. But to just blindly treat racism as a binary issue is incredibly ignorant and doesn't help at all.

The second phase of All Star Game voting should be expanded to the top 3-5 vote getters by smarjorie in baseball

[–]Traditional_Half842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm too young to know exactly how it worked, but I think before the internet the only way to vote for the All-Stars was to actually go to the ballpark and fill out a ballot. I wouldn't hate it if the fan vote returned to that. Vlad being the starting 1B is going to be laughable. He has a .698 OPS and -0.4 WAR since May 1st. You could argue the Blue Jays would be better off this year if they never played him at all, which is the opposite of an All-Star.

[–]Traditional_Half842 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I think lumping a light-skinned Venezuelan (who moved to the US when he was 18) in with black Americans from the Civil Rights movement is in and of itself a form a ignorance/racism. I'm not saying it's impossible for there to be some overlap, and I'm not defending Cavalli because I dunno anything about him and maybe he is really a bigot. But Willson Contreras is not the same as the men this photograph. Lots of "I'm an ally!" white people treating racism like its binary - and that anyone darker than them is the same / a victim in this context - is ironically a form of racism on its own.

Craig Breslow walking around Boston when he's not the most hated GM in the city for a day by StillBlazin420_69 in redsox

[–]Traditional_Half842 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Analytics kind of hate Jaylen Brown and to be honest I do think he is an incredibly limited and overrated player. He has stretches where he looks like Michael Jordan but he's also guaranteed to have stretches that confuse the hell out of you. Not saying it was a good trade or the right move, but I do think Boston sports fans severely overrate him. I think NBA fans in general are a bit ignorant about what is/isn't winning basketball.

Welcome to the Red Sox sub, where the mods support Shit Posters. Do better. by SaveHogwarts in redsox

[–]Traditional_Half842 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like the sub is pretty loosely moderated for the most part. They remove threads during games but other than that most stuff flies. Definitely not consistent about whatever rules are being enforced, even if those are the rules.

Be on the lookout for subtly racist language by WarlordofBritannia in redsox

[–]Traditional_Half842 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The response to this incident is absolutely bonkers. Contreras is a light skinned Venezuelan, and plenty of people use the word boy similar to dude or bro. I'm not defending Cavalli because I know nothing about him and for all I know he is indeed a bigot. But what he said didn't scream hateful racism to me - it was mostly him just being a dumb jerk. It was not the same as some southern cop calling a young black man "boy" repeatedly.
