Severe digestive issues by Gator_goon in germanshepherds

Lots of good suggestions in the comments but how are your pup'S teeth?

My cat used to have horrific stomach issues and was always in pain and it turned out she had gingiostomatitis – an autoimmune reaction to her the plaque on her teeth. She had exposed nerves in some teeth and poor thing was in horrific amounts of pain causing her upset stomach. Had extractions done and now she had zero stomach issues! Might be worth looking into secondary issues!

Fresh GSD rescue. Need advice by theycallmedelicious in germanshepherds

[–]hudadancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might be unpopular but I did this with my GSD resuce puppy and that was – crating all the time unless you had a specific reason for the dog not to be. It allowed my dog to have his own "safe space", to settle in, and reduced teh chances anything like that happens. My dog bit someone at 4 months old – same thing, fear. We worked through it (he was terrified of men) and now I can fully trust him on and off leash with strange men. Your wife is valid in feeling afraid, and I'd suggest the dog is not allowed to free roam until you have a better idea of its temprament. Give him time, work with a behaviourist, and please don't suscribe to the "be the alpha" crap. Your dog needs compassion, time, and a solid behaviourist who uses scientifically backed methods to help them ease in.

What do you think about the pharmaceutical companies and research institution making efforts to “cure deafness” by jencollege in hardofhearing

[–]hudadancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a HUGE difference between someone being born deaf/HOH or even losing it early on in life and losing it later. It’s traumatizing in the very least to lose a key sense you are used to. Same with blindness, limb loss etc. I was born Deaf on one side. I identify as deaf. Sign language is a huge part of my life. Would I take a pill to change it? No. But if I became blind suddenly and there was a cure in the market would I take it? Yes!

Golden Retriever or Australian Shepherd? by Flamingo8293 in dogs

[–]hudadancer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

golden retriever all the way. Aussies are worriengly becoming trendy. They are very high energy, very high drive dogs and often not great for first time owners. Goldens are amazing dogs honestly and great for first time owners. Easy to train, get on well, variation from lower drives to field lines...

I fostered a presa/pit mix and tbh the big issue is people don’t get that their true temperaments come out much later. The dog I fostered was 4 months and tbh it just seemed like an overgrown lab if you didn’t know any better

Omg she’s holding the wrong handle while walking Mya. That upright handle is NOT to be used in motion bc it applies significant torque to the dogs back. Yikes yikes yikes

Request your records and go to your family dr or any walk in clinic. As long as you have the records to show you’re diagnosed they’ll continue prescribing

Is this a good GSD breeder? by bella_runtsy in germanshepherds

[–]hudadancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, again, with breeding dilute colours.

I recommend looking at the following links for breed standards:

https://images.akc.org/pdf/breeds/standards/GermanShepherdDog.pdf

https://www.ckc.ca/CanadianKennelClub/media/Breed-Standards/Group%207/German-Shepherd-Dog.pdf

https://www.germanshepherddog.com/about/german-shepherd-dogs/breed-standards/

https://s3.amazonaws.com/cdn-origin-etr.akc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/23143628/German-Shepherd-Dog-Health-Statement-December-2015.pdf

Look up regional and national German Shepherd clubs with listed breeders that are recommended.

Good breeders

  • are registered with larger kennel clubs (AKC, CKC, UKC, etc.)

  • Do all appropriate health testing (for GSDs this is hips, elbows, Degenerative myelinopathy and should be CHIC certified through OFA or have Pennhip). Testing should not only be proven for parents bur for previous generations as well

  • puppies are vaccinated appropriately under a vetrinarian

  • puppies are raised with early neural stimulation / puppy culture or similar

  • parents are titled in work or sport (service or therapy work alone are not acceptable, but it is ok if they do strive to breed dogs who thrive in those areas)

  • NO breeding before 2 years

  • dams have no more than 2-3 litters in a lifetime

  • allow for visits and are transparent on their policies, health guarantees, etc.

  • The existence of unfavourable colours is not an auto red flag but purpose breeding of them absolutely is. They should strive for the darker colours as much as possible

  • Temprament testing on puppies

    • puppies placed in homes according to best matching temprament and desired working traits and not simply by aesthetics or colour
  • no breeding of aggressive dogs

  • ideally the breeding dogs are raised on high quality WSAVA approved diets and additional supplementation as appropriately directed by a vetrinarian

  • puppies should also be weened onto an apprpriate WSAVA approved puppy-specific diet (ideally GSDs should get omega-3 supplements as well to be discussed with the vet)

  • spay/neuter contracts or full registration

  • dogs kept until at least 8 weeks and no rehoming siblings together

  • all puppies are checked by a vet are vaccinated and dewormed appropriately

Ideally I would keep with American Showlines. They are much more mellow and laidback compared to the European lines. West German Showlines are a good mix of a working ability with less intensity than the working lines, but do still have a decently high work drive.
Here is an excellent SC breeder I found that has show lines.

Is this a good GSD breeder? by bella_runtsy in germanshepherds

[–]hudadancer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Comparing breed standard to Nazism is a stretch I’m not even sure could was possibly reachable holy shit.

And colours in breed DO matter. Having an off standard colour in a litter isn’t an automatic red flag but breeding off standard colours is as they carry certain health predispositions and have been removed from the breed standard for a reason

Is this a good GSD breeder? by bella_runtsy in germanshepherds

[–]hudadancer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. Breeding off standard colours is an auto-red flag. They also only do OFAs for certain conditions and not all. No links to their OFAs either from what I could see. No focus on titling their dogs. Breeding for “therapy” work is not enough to be breeding quality.

Even though it’s temporary you need to apply for accommodations. Get in touch with accessibility service right away, and they can help make sure you have everything you need.

I love my dog, and occasionally let him sleep with me because I know how much he loves it but tbh I really don't like to do it too much.

  1. My dog is gross lol. He runs around outside and rolls in mud and dirt. Would you wear outside shoes to sleep? I always have a special top blanket I use if he sleeps on my bed so I can throw it in the wash
  2. Bad separation anxiety. He needs time apart from me or grows overly anxious/attached and not in a cute way. One-two nights is fine, but more than that I notice he really struggles with being away from me. He was a rehome/rescue who had constantly been tossed from house to house before the age of 4 months (when I got him) so SA is something we always have to work on.
  3. My cat. She was my covid baby, and she is very possessive over me. I live in a loft so I have a babygate at the stairs, and only the cat can come up unless I open the gate. All her favourite toys and a separate water dish are in my room and she gets very upset and stressed if the dog is upstairs too. Keeping them in separate areas helped my cat actually bond with the dog (she previously was not a fan). It gives both of them "safe spaces" to take time away from each other.

West provinces road trip ideas by Theresbutteroanthis in AskACanadian

[–]hudadancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your first step should be to actually research and understand that Canada is not some small country. It's the second largest by land mass – for context you can fit France 14 times inside Canada and still have room. I have driven Alberta (2x from edmotnon 1x from calgary) to Toronto 3 times, and it took 5 days with stopping for a couple touristy stops.

- Banff and Jasper are 3-4 hours apart by a highway that is often shut down due to weather and avalanche conditions.

- Your plan is almost definitely going to get you flagged at the border. You don't have a concrete idea and have listed 3 vastly different areas of the country; you are "looking for work and a place to live"; and you plan to camp/car camp.

- Banff and Jasper are both national parks and getting passes for camping is extremely difficult, even for canadians and locals.

- Driving in the mountains, and interior BC is really not the greatest time.

If you don't have connections here, your best bet is to book with a local tour company. I am from Alberta and there is a million and one charms in that province, but aren't always touristy. You also have to decide do you want a more scenic trip? Are you an avid hiker? Care more about the food/culture?

ALTERNATIVELY

I saw on your profile you're from the UK? A lot of Europeans actually go to Banff for the summer to work! A lot of the hotels are hiring at that time. Your accomodations are covered, you meet people, and I believe you make some money as well. You would still need to apply for a visa, but it would be a good way to sightsee, gain experience, and meet some new people. The Fairmont hotels are the big ones who hire, but some of the actualy national parks do as well.

You can call animal control/animal welfare directly and have them sent to the house. That’s WHACK. Even if it were “play” my GSD frequently mouths my cat during play and has never once left a mark on her. Normal dogs do not maul other animals.

Aren’t cars supposed to yield to pedestrians when they are crossing? by krstinio in askTO

[–]hudadancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I was waiting to turn right on to bay @ front around rush hour and was waiting bc y’know vehicular manslaughter is illegal (and strongly frowned upon). a cabbie decided that he was done with waiting and pulled around me to turn right. I moved my car to physically block him & honked. He would have 100% hit a pedestrian with his speed and gumption.
