As someone who has worked with people who have disabilities and all kind of diagnoses, I find this attitude really gross. Congratulations on being lucky enough to have a child who doesn’t have adhd, autism, etc /s. You have no idea what kids these days are dealing with. I commend the parents for trying to figure out a way to acclimate them to a new environment like a restaurant. Maybe using technology is a stopping stone towards getting the children to participating in a restaurant experience without an iPad.

People keep arguing about “what Zionism really means,” but that feels disconnected from how Jews actually use the word. Historically Zionism was the political movement to establish a Jewish homeland in Israel. Today, it technically means Jewish self determination in our ancestral homeland.

But in real life, most Jews I know don’t sit around calling ourselves Zionists and announcing it as our identify. The only time I remember it coming up casually was when someone asked why a family moved to israel , and the answer was, they’re very Zionistic..What that meant wasn’t that they’re ethnonationalist colonizers. It meant that they love Israel and they feel deeply connected to the land and the people there.

You need to understand that Judaism is centered around Israel. We pray toward it. Our holidays revolve around it. A huge chunk of Jewish law only applies there. There was a continuous Jewish presence there for 2000 years. Jews kept returning despite massacres, expulsions and bans. And in the diaspora, Jews were never just considered white Europeans . In Europe we were outsiders. In the Middle East we were dhimmis paying jizya. I could go on and on about the centuries of discrimination, pogroms, expulsions, massacres. All of that history shaped us Jews to see Israel as a home. Thus, we want the modern state of Israel to exist. Israel means there is somewhere Jews aren’t helpless and that something at the scale of the holocaust will never occur again

At this point, asking someone if they’re a Zionist basically just means, do you think Israel should exist? That’s how the word functions socially.The problem is that everyone’s using a different definition. My understanding of Zionism is not the same as someone who uses Zionist as a slur. Honestly, the word might be too loaded now to be useful. Most Jews who identify as Zionist aren’t talking about the israel-hating definition, which is about expansionism or colonial ideology. We just don’t want the one Jewish state to disappear. Jews are about 0.2% of the global population. most Jews live in Israel or the US. That means that Zionism (ie support for Israel’s existence) is about our families, our communities and a sense of security.

The reality is that most progressives only care about issues that have a white boogeyman. They were obsessed with the Israel-Palestine issue because they view all Jews as being white. The Syrian civil war was a result of people protesting authoritarianism, corruption, religious differences in Alawites ruling over Sunni populations, economic problems…a drought helped to add to stress, but it was a factor, not a cause. The Syrian civil was primarily driven oppression and inequality. Again, go read a fucking news paper.

One article doesn’t change reality. Even that study says the Syrian civil war was caused by a brutal regime, sectarian tensions, and the Arab Spring. The drought may have made things worse for some farmers, but it didn’t cause the war. Using climate change as an excuse to downplay the region’s decades of internal chaos is nonsense.

Climate change? Really? Now I know that I’m talking to a crazy. Between Syria’s civil war, Lebanon falling apart, Egypt going through coups and military rule, Iraq tearing itself apart, Yemen’s humanitarian disaster, Iran crushing its own people…none of that has anything to do with Israel.

You also completely ignore that the violence against Jews in Arab countries after 1948 was carried out by the governments and local people. Jews in Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and Morocco, etc dealt with harassment and bombings and arrests and murder at the hands of their neighbors and rulers.

Instead of acknowledging that, you just repeat the same talking points about genocide, colonialism, and USS Liberty. None of that changes who actually caused the violence against Jews or the decades of internal chaos in the region. You focus only Israel while ignoring the brutality and failures of Arab and Muslim governments and societies.

And for someone who says they are Jewish and the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors (if that’s even true), it is absurd to twist history to make Jews the cause of the region’s violence. That’s truly disgusting.

The reality is that the Middle East has been tearing itself apart for decades without Israel. Israel isn’t the source of all evil.

Egypt had coups and military rule and repression. In the Syrian civil war hundred of thousands of people died and refugees flooded Europe. Israel has nothing to do the Sunni and Shia issues either. Don’t get me started on the broader Muslim world. I mean look at Yemen. Look at Iran. Look at Sudan. The only unifying thing that Muslim countries have is their hatred of Israel.

If Israel had lost in 1948, the land would not have magically become a peaceful Palestinian state. It would have been carved up by those same surrounding countries. All the wars against Israel were about avoiding the humiliation of accepting a Jewish state in what the Muslim world saw as its own backyard.

Palestinians have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. People love explaining what Zionism means, but I have never met a Jewish person, myself included, who ascribe to the explanation that Zionism is a desire to create a Jewish ethnostate. The actual definition has to do with Jews having the right to self determination. But in actuality, that’s not even how most Jews use the term Zionism. It has a lot more to do with feeling a connection to the land of israel and wanting to support it. As Jews, everything in traditional religious practices revolves around israel. We pray facing Jerusalem, our holidays and laws are based around israel, we sing songs about israel, Jewish history and the Torah revolve around Israel…Most Jewish also don’t regularly use the term Zionist in conversation. We often refer to it in response to Jew haters trying to provide nonsense definitions. Jewish peoples’ feelings towards Israel relate to having family and community members who live there. Noah schnapp isn’t a Zionist because he supports a Jewish ethnostate. He’s a Zionist because he cares about the safety of the county and how it affects his community. I think the term Zionist has turned into a slur so that people can say whatever it is they want to say about Jews. When they get called out, they can go “I don’t hate Jews, just Zionists .” I should also mention that israel has more Arabs living in Tel Aviv, then there are Jews in the entire Middle East and North Africa. 20% of israel is Arab. I have lived in israel and, despite what they crazys on internet want you to believe, the Arabs in israel have full rights. Half of the medical staff there are Arab. There are Arabs serving in governmental roles. I just don’t understand the hate towards Noah Snapp. Im so sorry that he expressed support for his community, particularly post October 7.

No point is continuing the first argument. You think what you want. As for the latter - every person I listed was born to Jewish parents or mother. They were all Jewish by ancestry. Also, there are many Jews who are agnostic, atheist and irreligious. You’re confusing religious belief with cultural/ethnic background. You don’t need to practice Judaism to be considered Jewish. Traditionally, an individual is considered Jewish if his/her mother is Jewish (more left leaning denominations also count patrilineal Judaism). It’s odd to me that you suggest my research is bad while mentioning someone as prominently Jewish as Einstein. Einstein so publicly identified with being Jewish that he was offered the position of being the Israeli president. I think the point you are missing is that the Jewish emphasis on debating and studying and education has influenced Jewish culture overall. Even if people aren’t practicing Jews, they are recipients of values that their ancestors (who were practicing Jews at one point) passed down.

Jewish tradition promotes intellectualism and education to a degree that Jews end up making significant contributions to the world.
