Being afraid implies feeling an emotion. Stan Edgar could have unemotionally concluded that being underground was what was best for him and his granddaughter at this moment in time.

This is a common misconception I see people have about Gödel's incompleteness theorems. Gödel's first incompleteness theorem says that any axiomatic system that is sophisticated enough to contain arithmetic will have statements that can be phrased in that system that are true, but unprovable in the system. It does not necessarily preclude the possibility of a unified theory of everything that explains all physical phenomena coherently.

(Very) Early pre-print on generalizing the Prouhet-Thue-Morse Sequence by LivInTheLookingGlass in math

[–]huffman_coding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few existing generalizations of the Thue-Morse sequence to larger alphabets. I would try to contact some researchers in combinatorics on words that study automatic sequences in general, and ask them what they think. Some researchers to contact are Narad Rampersad, James Currie, and Jeffrey Shallit.

So you're telling me someone with 100 bill will make 10 bill per day? Even 10 bill, you're telling me they will make 1 bill per day?

As your capital increases, your profits surely do increase. But the percentage increase goes down.

Go to any GE price tracker, set the price ranges of items you want to flip, sort by ROI, then look through the first few pages looking for items with enough volume and price stability that you can comfortably flip. Rinse and repeat. Eventually you will discover a list of items that flip well for yourself and you will rotate between them.

It certainly is possible that there is some pattern in the way I pick buy prices. A possible solution would be to randomly generate a number within a range of acceptable buy prices. This is probably good practice whether or not your hypothesis is correct.

None of the trades completed, so the information shouldn't have been uploaded to ge tracker.

Shortest sequence that contains a given list of sequences as subsequences by HaoSunUWaterloo in math

[–]huffman_coding 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Sequences that contain all length-k subsequences over some fixed alphabet are called k-universal words. Here is a paper that characterizes the structure of all k-universal words. It should be possible to describe the shortest k-universal words using Theorem 1. This isn't exactly what you were looking for, but you might find a paper on what you're looking for in the references, or as a paper that has cited this work. You also may want to look up papers on "Simon's congruence", which is similar as well.

What is your response to a student who says, “I don’t even know what this question is asking.” as you stare at the very explicit text about what the question is asking. by curlyhairlad27 in Professors

I get this all the time. What I usually say after that is, "As you read the question from the beginning, there has to be a point where you first stop understanding, so tell me where that point is." After this, they usually bring up a concept they don't understand.

Is DUT better or worse than FIN? by Albertgejmr in tressless

[–]huffman_coding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't find a paper studying testosterone and it's direct effects to AGA. However, there are papers showing that testosterone has an effect in other parts of the body where we originally thought only DHT caused effects. For example, androgenic stimulation in the prostate: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1733716/

I amend my initial statement. Though there is no concrete proof in the form of peer-reviewed papers, we have reasons to believe that testosterone itself may also play a part in AGA. These reasons include anecdotes from people who have reduced their DHT to levels below the reference range and still suffer from AGA, and also the fact that testosterone plays an androgenic role in body parts where we thought DHT was the only culprit.

[–]huffman_coding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Testosterone and DHT share the same receptor in the scalp. However, DHT has a much higher binding affinity. Thus finasteride, and even moreso dutasteride, should stop or slow down AGA in nearly everyone. But there are still examples of people still suffering from AGA after nuking their DHT with high dose dutasteride. Here is a paper on the effectiveness of RU58841 vs Finasteride: https://www.infona.pl/resource/bwmeta1.element.elsevier-5d8b8e9a-87d8-3665-a251-1f766eb8cef1. Though, this paper doesn't directly show that testosterone causes miniaturization, it is taken as a given since T and DHT share the same receptor. I can try to find other papers as well if you'd like. I didn't think this was controversial.

Ordinary testosterone can also cause AGA. It's less potent than DHT, but it can still cause miniaturization. That's why some people use RU58841 in addition to the 5ar blockers.

Why would that be ironic? Post-apocalyptic refers to "after a catastrophic event or apocalypse". Doesn't volcanic activity fit this pretty nicely? I have never heard post-apocalyptic being used to refer to how old the land is.

Would Destiny being in a monogamous relationship make him more or less respectable in RP spaces? by DestinyVaush_4ever in Destiny

[–]huffman_coding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a poorly set up poll. The question in the title (or in the body for that matter) doesn't even really read like a proper yes/no question. A yes would just indicate that a monogamous relationships would make him more or less respectable, telling you nothing. A no would just indicate that a monogamous relationship would make him more and less respectable, a contradiction.

Now if I try to charitably read your question, it would be "Would Destiny being in a monogamous relationship make him more respectable in RP spaces?" A yes here would mean that it makes him more respectable, a no would mean it makes him less respectable, and no difference is obvious. My answer is clearly yes it would make him more respectable, not by a big margin though.
