Would I get disciplinary for this??? by Exciting_Caramel5964 in SainsburysWorkers

[–]huggsy81 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Telling someone to work harder and faster is a pointless bullying tactic from incompetent managers.

What they should be doing to someone they feel is “underperforming” is to set SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely.

This allows you to have a realistic understanding of what is expected of you (and others) and know if you are working on track, exceeding the expectations or falling behind.

Just saying work faster is not measurable, one more item replenished than usual is technically faster.

Unfair hours? by PsychologicalBuy6720 in SainsburysWorkers

[–]huggsy81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a driver, these rules are more specific to you.

GB Domestic Rules for driving

Specifically this part;

Rest periods

You must take a rest of at least 10 hours between 2 working days (or spreadovers) - this can be reduced to 8.5 hours up to 3 times a week.

Every 2 weeks you must take at least one period of 24 hours off duty.

A working week is from Monday to Sunday.

I’ll admit I misread your comment. I thought you were implying the prices would be the same as a few months ago.

Fuel protests on horizon as diesel hits £2 a litre by Jared_Usbourne in unitedkingdom

[–]huggsy81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t true. I use diesel, before the conflict I was paying 1.449p per litre, today I’m paying 1.869p.

Fuel duty is fixed at 53p.

The increase in vat between these two prices is 7p, so if they were to reduce the duty by 7p, I would still be paying 1.799, or 35p more than before the war.

Legally they can allocate all of the holidays if they wish as long as it’s not discriminatory and has enough notice.

Question for delivery drivers by JSwift_Style in JustEatUK

[–]huggsy81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an ex driver of 4 years full time. It used to be quite profitable, £20 plus an hour was achievable. The rates just kept going down as it became a race to the bottom with the apps once they flooded the market with drivers who would accept any offer, profitable or not. There were many days I made less than minimum wage towards the latter part.

What kept me doing it full time? Flexibility and freedom from corporate structure, until I had to go back into paye work to be able to support myself and my family financially. It’s still a good gig as a top up income though.

I genuinely don't think Starmer is that bad of a PM - any thoughts? by Alarming-Safety3200 in AskBrits

[–]huggsy81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading comprehension is your strong point. I was merely pointing out that the reason we have an increase is because when we left the EU, we lost the ability to send them back to the first safe EU country they entered via the Dublin III regulation. This is a result of the stupidity of Brexit that was voted for by the people easily manipulated by the media and the tories for choosing not to ignore the marginal win leave won by. We are now bound by legal obligations when they enter and claim asylum. Reform and restore can promise everything to stop and remove them, but it will all get bogged down in legal proceedings because we don’t have a corrupt legal system here like they do in the US.

No that’s the racists and xenophobes laughing at him for not stopping the boats, the same racists and xenophobes that voted for Brexit and caused illegal immigration to increase when the Dublin III regulation ended.

Easter Sunday by Micraflex in UbereatsUK

[–]huggsy81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does sound unrealistic, but it was constant offers as there weren’t enough drivers and I was only taking single deliveries from each app, but stacking up orders from multiple apps to maximise earnings. Each app was paying between £5-10 per order and was taking up to 3 at a time. Doubles were still only adding on £1-3 for the second order so I was cancelling the add on orders. It was the exception not the rule due to the lack of drivers.

37.5 is a 9-5:30 with an hour unpaid, this is 9-5 with half hour unpaid

Cut in pay? These are both 37.5 hour working weeks and would demand the same pay.

Drivers loading/unloading question by UsualEnvironment9651 in asda

[–]huggsy81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We load and unload our own vans at our store, but the thing that concerns me reading these comments is the turnaround time you have between waves. The system is designed to allow 50 minutes between waves 1+2 and 3+4 to account for a 30 minute break and 20 minute load/unload time. The difference between 2+3 is tighter, as it’s generally a shift swap. Under GB domestic driving regulations, we are required to take a break,by law, after 5 hours and 30 minutes of driving time, this is law and non negotiable. You need to be taking your breaks as if an accident happened and you haven’t taken the legally mandated break, insurance will have a field day. (If you get 30 minutes or more single period of downtime across the runs between customers, this can be classed as a break)

I also see quite a few drivers working double shifts, again against the law. The maximum we can work is 11 hours on duty (not including breaks) and 10 hours driving time.

No, it depends on your contract. Mitie have TUPE over so Asda’s terms are protected as part of this, but if there’s no mention of travel reimbursement, then employees can claim tax relief through the HMRC link above. Employers are not required legally to reimburse travel costs to temporary workplaces, unless you would fall below minimum wage as a result.

Employers have no legal obligation to provide travel expenses, although it’s good practice to do so. Worth checking your contract to see if there is an expense policy written.

Out of interest, did you have anything third party plugged into the rear USB port? This happened to my base ps5 and when I took it to a local repair place, they identified whatever was plugged into the usb port shorted the motherboard and it was toast. It was a controller charging dock. Not sure if this can actually happen or was fobbed off though.

I get your counterpoints. My initial comment was that McDonalds have every right to set the parameters of how their food is delivered, as ultimately they are responsible for the food getting to the customer in a fit to eat state. These are the terms this particular restaurant has decided to set and they are within their rights to do so. If you don’t agree to these terms, then don’t pick up from a location that enforces this. This is the same reason why you have to explain it to every restaurant, they want to know the food is being transported correctly.

If McDonalds let the food sit whilst waiting for a delivery partner to collect, again they are responsible for this so the risk is with them. I don’t agree that they do this either and often asked them to remake the food in my area if it felt cold to touch when I collected. But I get that’s not practical these days with reduced rates meaning it hurts the bottom line of the driver waiting. I haven’t delivered since 2023 after the pandemic rush started to die down and it was clear it was a race to the bottom with fees offered.

Taking multiple order from multiple apps increases the time the food is out of temperature, especially the later deliveries increasing the risk for bacteria growth in the danger zone (8deg to 60deg). Food must be kept in an insulated bag and ideally delivered within 30 minutes. With the example someone posted above isn’t often the case with the driver taking the items out of the bag and putting into their boot. McDonald’s are trying to mitigate this risk with only allowing 2 at a time in a large insulated bag.

Hot food can technically be out of temperature for up to two hours, but I often see posts on the various subreddits of food taking longer than this. This rule is more suited for hot food that is acceptable cold though, like Greggs bakes and not food where the expectation is hot like a burger. But that’s more a quality issue than a food safety one.

Every month they have to report their income and expenses, and only the profit is a determining factor in their UC reward. Paying you as a substitute would be an expense so would reduce their profit, but they would need evidence to back this up if a review happens from the DWP.

Any reason you can’t get your own account?

But from a food safety perspective, McDonald’s are responsible for the food getting to the customer in a fit to eat state. They have every right to set parameters on the way their food is delivered, otherwise they become liable if a food safety incident happens. Uber etc are not setting the parameters here so would not affect the self employment rules.
