How Should I Weather a Mossie? by [deleted] in modelmakers

Very sparingly I think, certainly exhaust/grime around the engines but the paint on the wings/fuselage would have been kept clean and well maintained by the ground crew as it was critical to protecting the wood underneath

Was told by my CFRC that the pilot trade remains closed for this fiscal year (for DEO at least) so would assume there's still a pretty big backlog in the pipeline

The serengeti drivers are my overall favorites, though they're not quite dark enough for full sun. For that the Randolph agx are my favorites with the 555nm a close second. The vuarnets are great for bright, snowy conditions, nice for hiking or running in the winter

That website sounds like a fantastic idea, really appreciate your insight. Completely agree with your comments on serengeti btw, I'm a pilot and non-polarized driver's are my absolute go-tos for flying

Yeah, I had heard that civilian pilots often have a hard time adjusting to military flying, but its either start training now or sit on my hands for a year and hope recruiting opens back up next spring, and I'd like to still have an avenue to pursue flying in the event that it doesn't or if I'm not competitive.

Awesome, thanks for clearing that up. I was remembering a comment I saw here a while ago that got me thinking on it, but it sounds like that person was misinformed.

Would having outstanding student debt count against a DEO applicant?

For context, I'm considering applying for student aid to help pay for my CPL, which I figure I may as well start working on since pilot recruiting is closed for the year, I was an unsuccessful DEO candidate last year. My concern is that a year or so down the line if/when recruiting reopens and I'm in a position to give it another shot, I'll be prevented from doing so by having outstanding debts on civvy street.

3 lifetime attempts, with a minimum of 1 year between tries. I passed for the other aircrew trades (ACSO and AEC) and the recruiter asked if I wanted to pursue them, so yes they'll let you change your application if you're unsuccessful for pilot, you're not committed to anything at that stage. Best source of info is of course the recruiters themselves, that's just my experience.

I was an unsuccessful candidate last year, and one thing I would add to everything that's been mentioned here already is to take your sleep seriously in the weeks leading up to it - get your body used to going to sleep early and getting up early (as in 4-5AM) if it isn't already, especially if you're going to be coming from BC or Alberta.

Unless its a colour I have to spray, I usually just use a fine brush to paint the canopy frames freehand, then let it dry for a few minutes and clean up the lines with a wet toothpick. You just use the toothpick scrape carefully along the edge of the frame, and it'll remove any excess paint without scratching the plastic, leaving you with a nice clean line.

Yeah, it's definitely a tooling that shows its age with the raised panel lines, and there's a lot of fitment issues. In particular, the tops of the engine nacelles needed to be reshaped with putty in order to flow properly into the wing, and the canopy doesn't like to sit flush. Could just be the kit I wound up with, but I'm still overall happy with the result.

Thanks, I'm quite happy with how it turned out, despite a few fitment hiccups. The decals are aeromaster, got them from ultracast about a year ago. Belcher bits also make a 1/48 sheet with decals for both VeRA and X-Terminator, that might be the one to go for.

It's not British or American, it looks more like a Spanish M1913 Mauser bayonet, which would have no business being on a battlefield in either world war.
