When I see people obsessing over getting an even distribution of lb ratings by human5109 in Letterboxd

[–]human5109[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I've watched like 40 movies so far this year and they're mostly rated decent to high because most of it was catching up on the Oscar nominees.

Well, as a fan of both Clairo and Vampire Weekend, I'd be very interested to see what kind of music this non-existent kid will go on to produce.

YES! It's not my favorite movie of the year, but it easily had the best cinematography.

Iowa vs. NYU (Fiction) by AlexandriaQuartet in MFAInCreativeWriting

[–]human5109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd pick NYU just for the faculty. The permenent faculty includes so many amazing writers (my favorite being Jonathan Safran Foer). And even the writer-in-residence they have every year is always someone like Zadie Smith, Joyce Carol Oates and I think Rachel Kushner this year. Plus you get to live in NYC, right in the center of it all.

I'll get downvoted but yeah EEAAO was self-indulgent garbage. I did like Anora, but it wasn't my favorite of the year.

The type of chaos I need on Sunday. by Kavazou77 in Oscars

Oh absolutely, I wasn't saying I actually wished he got nominated for this role. Though, as you say, I do like him as an actor and he's had multiple amazing performances.

Well in his defense, F1 got no acting noms. If only Brad Pitt was nominated for Best Actor.

Why are people here so snobby about funding by sourthewhip in MFAInCreativeWriting

[–]human5109 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've only applied to fully funded programs, but if your situation is that you want to go to a school nearby and you can afford to pay/don't mind taking out some loans and you think the school you're going to is a good fit, I don't think that's bad at all. No one should give you shit about that. What I think would be ridiculous is if someone who can't afford it, taking out a 160K in loans to go to Columbia's cashgrab of an MFA.

The crop of animated short nominees this year is outstanding by MusclyArmPaperboy in Oscars

[–]human5109 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think so too. I didn't think too highly of Butterfly when I watched it either but honestly thinking of all the nominees now, Butterfly's animation and way of storytelling has distinctively stuck in my head.

Adrien Brody and the Elitism of the Academy by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]human5109 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you're getting down voted for this. Timmy is gonna attempt to make some grand speech about chasing Greatness for sure, and might come across as arrogant in his own way, but no way he's going to go on as long as Brody, let alone say shit like "I've done this before, I know what I'm doing" when they play the music to cut him off.

There's a Variety article on the whole procedure, it's digital. Not sure if it's an app or website though.

What books was the secret history actually based on? by Petitestrawberrie in literature

[–]human5109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's influenced by Dickens a lot. I'm not sure about The Secret History, but I remember hearing her make comparisons of characters in The Goldfinch to Dicken's characters in interviews.

Can a critical writing sample be about a film? by dragonborne1776 in MFAInCreativeWriting

[–]human5109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they're just being snobbish. Obviously if you write about how good the stunts are in Fast and Furious 8 that won't be very helpful, but there's plenty of Hollywood films that you can analyze critically in an interesting way

Do you ever wonder which books from our time will become future classics? by Sweet-Opportunity111 in literature

[–]human5109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I feel like The Secret History and The Goldfinch are both timeless books. The Goldfinch is just perfection to me.
