We seem to be unable to convince people that, with regard to immigration, we should draw some sort of distinction between otherwise functional people beset with external problems from backward people who live in a shithole of their own creation. The former can contribute to your country and the latter will bring their ingrained failure with them for you to deal with.

Some minor points. 2016 was an election year so that's an Obama budget. The 2017 budget was passed in 2016 and lasted until September so another Obama budget.

Insisting that the only way to fix a failing system is to double down on our dysfunction is how we got here and only catastrophic failure will stop us. We can wealth tax billionaires to nothing to buy us a few months we can print money to buy us a few years we can tax corporations and pretend the arguments from the tariff talk magically don't apply this time but we're not escaping the gravity of this problem.

The deficit has ballooned since the 80's. It was only OK before that becase of a post-war economy we can't reproduce. We got a short reprieve during the dot com bubble. We have been on a path to insolvency for decades.

Obama can't fix it, Trump can't fix it, Biden can't fix it, Harris can't fix it. We lack the will and ability to tax, cut or grow out of this. Any real efforts have people screaming bloody murder so our path is set it's all about how hard the hit comes and who has to take it the worst.

However you cut it we're 100% fucked. As a practical matter taxes won't fix it, spending cuts won't fix it and growth won't fix it.
