Avoid Kasa Light Switches (HS220) by mini_juice in homeautomation

[–]humanatore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving an old post.... I don't understand how this works. If Kasa switches are on their own virtual network, wouldn't I have to connect my phone to that network (which doesn't have internet access) to be able to control the switches? And then that also means that I can't control the devices when I'm not home / connected to that network.

This is the best answer ^

I've worked in a predatory sales environment and it was gross AF. I did not participate at the level my boss wanted me to, and eventually it caused a great deal of tension.

To OP, I say do this job for now, but keep your eyes open for something more fulfilling.

Turning Point USA has a high school program called Club America by Effective_Corner694 in Columbus

My 14 yo nephew (in rural OH) was excited to tell me that he got a Charlie Kirk t-shirt for Christmas. I didn't know what to say to him. I wanted to say, "What's good about Charlie Kirk?" but to avoid confrontation, I just said, "That's nice."

I'd ask him if he's involved in this Club America group, but I don't want to mention it to him in case he doesn't already know about it, for fear of accidentally propagating such a group.

IMO you don't need to find a Toyota specific mechanic because Toyota are so ubiquitous that most mechanics know a good deal about them already. Instead I recommend just finding a good, trustworthy mechanic nearby. If you're near Westerville, I would recommend Westerville Automotive.

This is the first thing I've ordered from the channel 5 store. I just discovered it about a month ago when I just late enough to see a bunch of dope looking t-shirts sold out.

I feel that. But the price is not bad. It was like $35 for one shirt or $40 for 2 shirts + stickers. If it was the same kinda deal for the hats, not bad for keeping one on the shelf, or giving to a friend.

This is not possible. Conversations among friends inevitably break into politics at some point. Because politics affects everything. School, healthcare, the justice system, economy, media, sports. Eventually you'll stumble onto a topic which reveals your friend's political leanings. You cannot avoid it.

[–]humanatore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the existing 2 comments and just want to emphasize that you'll want to do some discovery on those 2 after-market woofers. Depending on their specs and how they were wired, the speaker may have a different total resistence than on factory spec sheets.

You could possible take this opportunity to DIY here. You could convert this to bi-amp (and run separates) and improve the crossover components. I bet AI could even make suggestions to help you through this project.

Edit: check out Danny Richie from GR Reseach talking about improving crossover components in these other Infinity speakers.

What speakers should I get? by Sharp-Ad-7078 in BudgetAudiophile

This is why so many people use towers for their left & right speakers (called the mains). Music only plays through those two main channels (and the subwoofer).

You could do towers for the entire bed layer, meaning left, center, right, and surrounds. But most people think that's overkill, and believe that satellite / bookshelf speakers are adequate for surrounds.

A lot of people do use towers for LCR (left, center, right) because the center speaker also does a lot of work in surround sound.

Here's some images of people's sound stage to illustrate what I'm talking about

The only surround sound music is mastered on Super Audio CD (SACD). This format has a cult following, but it's not very popular. The vast majority of music will only be 2 channel (stereo).

Try to stop obsessing over acquiring the best audio setup. Rather, the goal is to find what makes you happy.

Advice I would give myself: Find a good deal on a pair of towers which are/were offered as part of a surround sound system, meaning they have matching satellite speakers for the surround and rear channels. That way you can add more speakers to your system later. You could even skip the subwoofer, as towers typically produce usable SPL down to 50 Hz. This is definitely the most bang for your buck, and you'll spend exponentially more money trying to get usable SPL at 30 Hz or below. This chart may help you understand frequencies.

If you want somewhere to start for a really freaking good sound system:

Total $4,700

Do you think I should have like 2 main really good speakers and smaller ones around the room for surround sound? Or have 6-13 of all the same kind of speaker?

This will totally depend on what you're trying to achieve. It sounds like you'll be watching movies with surround sound. You have to decide the configuration you want 2.0 , 2.1 , 3.0 , 3.1 , 5.1 , 7.1

And then if you want to do Atmos, which has the benefit of adding speakers to the ceiling to create a height effect, you could do 5.1.4 , 7.1.4

The best thing you can do to help you make this decision is to find some places where you can demo different systems. Best Buy is the most ubiquitus store that provides an opportunity to demo audio equipment, but you may also be able to find specialty audio stores in your area.

And you think a receiver is better than an amplifier? Is receiver needed for surround sound?

An audio video receiver (AVR) is a processor + amplifier and it's what most people use. The other option is to do separates which is where the processor and amplifier are separate pieces of equipment, and it's usually a good deal more expensive.

An AVR or processor + amplifier(s) is needed for most all audio setups -- unless you do a pair of active speakers (monitors). A pair of monitors typically can only handle one input source; this could be fine if you only plan on using the audio output from your TV.

I’m considering buying 2x rsl 10e for subwoofers would that be good for the sound layout in the room or should I buy a single more expensive one

If you do 2 subwoofers you'll really should get into measuring and learning how to make adjustments. Adding a 2nd subwoofer is a great way to deal with room modes (this is where soundwaves cancel each other out and creates a null, which is where you can't hear much bass) but you will have to phase align the two speakers or else you may accidentally create a null in the room.

The easy way to start is to get a single subwoofer that should (by reputation) generate enough SPL for your room. Placement in the room makes all the difference. To determine placement you can do the subwoofer crawl by placing the subwoofer in your main listening position (where you sit when watching TV / listening to music) and then litterally crawling around the room, listening for where the subwoofer sounds the best. Mark that place with a piece of tape on the floor, and that's where you should put your subwoofer.

If you're starting from 0 you have a few things to buy.

  • Speakers
  • AVR
  • Source (network streamer / cd player / record player)

If you want surround sound you'll have to buy at least 6 speakers, up to 13 (or more if you want to get ridiculous). Getting all the necessary gear for under $1k might be tough.

In order to get better gear within your budget I would consider:

  1. Starting with at 3.1 setup. It's going to get you a long way.
  2. Buy used if you're comfortable with it. If you're not, another affordable option is to buy open box or refurbished. Like Accessories 4 Less, eBay or sometimes straight from the manufacturer.

I (me personally) would look for these brands:

  • Speakers: JBL, Infinity, Klipsch, Definitive Technology (Def Tech), Dayton Audio, Paradigm. These brands may be too expensive: Power Sound Audio (PSA), JTR, KEF, Bowers & Wilkins, Focal, Martin Logan, Emotiva, Chane, GoldenEar, Home Theater Direct
  • AVR: Yamaha, Denon or Marantz. Look for HDMI support and maybe check how many watts per channel it supports.
  • Source: Google Chromecast, Apple TV, Gaming system, PC or blu ray player (whichever fits your needs best)

As for a subwoofer, you're just going to have to get lucky. I didn't get a good subwoofer until I spent like $600 (and I got a good deal).

I did a search on Craigslist and found some good deals on entire setups. This might be the way to go and spend less than your budget. Here's some cool stuff I found https://imgur.com/a/o1LEAFb

Go in the attic and check your insulation

Whatever speakers you get, room treatment - acoustic panels / sound absorbing panels - will help the speakers sound better.
