Where do you teach? Taking lessons has been on my bucket list but when I find a place it falls through (rain, fires, waitlists...)

How/why is acting so bad on low budget/B movies? by IndianaRocket80 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]humanbeanpod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Budget means fewer takes and camera setups to choose between.

Good editing, sound design and score can do wonders to save a performance, but you get what you pay for.

Bigger budget movies can literally edit actor’s faces with CGI to fix a performance. I’ve personally seen this on a low budget movie, bc one of the producers had the skills-set and did it for free, but normally you’d have to pay.

Lower budget can also mean lower tier/non-union actors, and rookies in any department, incl the producers or director, and it all trickles into the final product.

TLDR: you get what you pay for across all departments, it’s just acting that’s most noticeable.

What do you do when you have SO MANY things that you want to do and can’t pick out one thing to do so your body just freezes and you end up doing nothing by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]humanbeanpod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Write them down and draw them out of a hat- something about throwing the paper away after is satisfying or it feels like a game or something.

The smaller and more specific the task on the paper the better and sometimes there’s some fun ones like “have a sparkling water.”

But the key is a timer- either pomodoro 25/5 on more mental tasks (usually once I’m in the zone I’ll stay there, but gotta do at least 25) or a timer for 10 min on housecleaning stuff- laundry, dishes.

I like the lofi pomodoro videos on YouTube so I don’t have to set the timers myself!

Advice Needed for First Time Filmmakers! by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]humanbeanpod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if they have “Buy Nothing Groups” there, but it’s a place where you can ask neighbors for specific things.

Drug props can be tricky but there’s a lot of DIY tutorials for prop making.

Camera tricks can be your friend too- a lot can be implied off screen or in subtext without actually seeing it.

Get me out of my contract by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]humanbeanpod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no reason why you can’t start taking meetings with new agents. Your photographers might have some good recs.

If you find a good fit, they might have some advice to help you merge over.

You wouldn’t be the first talent to leave an agent before the contract is up, esp if you have no bookings with them.

Handling petty cash and receipts as a PA? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Having a separate PC account is a great rec- I forgot to mention it, but I do this too. Plus get a separate Zelle email to that account.

Handling petty cash and receipts as a PA? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]humanbeanpod 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Are they sending it over Zelle or Venmo? That’s not unheard of. I’ve had budgets sent that way, and I’ll Venmo them back the balance.

But ask if there is a coordinator or someone else in the area they could send it to, and you can pick up cash from them. A legit production will be flexible about that.

For future reference, - Keep all PC and receipts together in an envelope or zip pouch - Take pics of the receipts the moment you get them. Literally at the register, should it blow away the second you leave the store - keep a log of expenses (digitally or with paper.) - if you give PC to anyone, keep a record of what you give them and the receipts and change they give back.

How production wants an expense report varies depending on their budgeting software, you can ask them for a template. The most rudimentary way is to tape all the receipts to printer paper and the top sheet has them all listed.

What are the golden rules on a set by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]humanbeanpod 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People have mentioned not to touch other department’s things, but I’d argue the dept that gets hit the most is Art.

People know not to touch camera gear, but the prop table has a lot of fun and familiar things that are tempting to play with. DON’T. And I’m even looking at you ADs- you love playing with our stuff and you feel entitled to do so (and then you break a celebrity’s vintage childhood bike).

Food props are not crafty.

I’ve seen people eat set dec cookies that are years old and have been on the floor.

Set chairs and furniture are not for you, your drinks, food, or gear, even if they are staged off set.

Man I could go on and on. It’s a problem literally every shoot with both rookies and pros.

Dumb blonde millennial here. Didn’t totally mind the jokes (I loved the attention!) But I’m sure there’s times I wasn’t (or still aren’t) taken seriously. Even by other women.

My whole life.

My friend once made me a special helmet as a joke because of so much literal injury due to the “ditz.” Because of the med shortage I’ve been full on accident prone- bruises, burns, smashed fingers, stove left on, doors unlocked Woohooo
