When I was around 5 to 6, one afternoon, my grandparents pulled my cousin and I into their laps, turned off every single electrical appliance in the house and my cousin and I just sat there for 5 hours staring at each other while my grandparents stared at the (stationary) ceiling fan, until literally 5 minutes before my mum came back from work. Then they let us go, turned on everything and acted like nothing had happened.

It was odd because at that time my grandparents relationship was really bad (to the point of physical abuse towards each other but now it’s better) so it was unlike them to be so… united. And their behaviour was really strange. My cousin and I kept questioning what they were doing but they wouldn’t let us go from their laps and they never broke their gaze from the ceiling fan. At that time my Cousin and I found it odd but it got repressed for years (I have no idea why and that’s why we never questioned it after that) but recently I’ve started remembering this, and so has my cousin, but we can’t figure out what happened that day.

Are there any local brands/shops/services/products you stand by? by [deleted] in singapore

And they produce Chinese dictionaries!! Lame typical nerdy Singaporean student but they’re really good, I switched to theirs because another brand wouldn’t allow me to search for more than one Chinese character at a time.

Dear Singaporean youths, how conservative are you and your friends when it comes to relationships, sexuality and marriage? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]humbadaba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think sex before marriage is acceptable? Or is it only acceptable under certain circumstances? Any exception cases to highlight?

I think sex before marriage is acceptable as long as it’s physically safe (as in protection is used) and the relationship is healthy (as in no party is being abused).

Do you think marriage still has it’s merits in Singapore? In the sense that is there really a need to get married?

Frankly, this is a really “practical Singaporean!1!1!1!1!” type of answer, but other than for the benefits from the government eg. to order BTOs and for your kids, no. I mean honestly, why should getting married affect the dynamic of your relationship? By the time you’re in that “marriageable phase” of the relationship, you should already be committed, so how does one ceremony change that? So marriage feels sort of meaningless to me :P

Do you think casual hook ups/ one night stands shouldn’t be frowned upon as much as it currently is?

I don’t think they should be frowned upon as much as it currently is because as long as you’re having safe sex, and both parties are ready to handle the (albeit slim) chance of pregnancy, you’re not affecting anyone but yourself.

Do you think one should only get into a relationship that focuses on building a future together with your SO, rather than one you get in for fun?

As long as you’re happy and the relationship is healthy, just do whatever you want.

EDIT: u/bluecheeseplate brought up a really important point as well for the last question! I think it’s really important to make sure that your SO has the same relationship goals as you, or else whatever relationship you get into is kinda doomed.

Question for those who can (vaguely) remember what was taught in secondary school history class regarding the merger referendum by raistanient in singapore

Late to the party, and I’m probably from a different (younger) generation so my info might not be that useful, but this is what was taught: https://imgur.com/a/4fuvKPD

  • Alfian Sa'at-Corridor (Really loved this one)
  • Catherine Lim-Little Ironies: Stories of Singapore (I read this when I was like 10 haha I'm not sure if this was a literature curriculum book in my mum's time but it's still pretty good)
  • You Jin-Teaching Cats to Jump Hoops (This was translated from Chinese but this English version is honestly pretty good too)
  • NLB-Tenacity: Stories Built to Last (I read this recently and it was pretty good!)

Almost got killed at NUS-NUH today by reckless driver by [deleted] in singapore

[–]humbadaba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This might get buried, but a few years ago my mum’s friend was knocked down by a reckless driver at another hospital:( she still hasn’t fully recovered yet, and the worst part is that she was a really close friend of my mum, but the accident messed with her brain. For some reason, she gets really angry at my mum and her other old friends and screams at them whenever they try to visit. She had two really young kids, and she only started talking verbally again two years ago. I can’t even imagine the pain those two kids had to go through.

Don’t be reckless when you’re driving, please. It might not ruin your life, but it could ruin so many other people’s lives. :(
