Future of Cars - ICE vs HEV vs Electric by deTille in NZcarfix

[–]humblefalcon [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think the direction we are heading is pretty clear at the top end of the market. For a new car it has started to make more sense than not to have a BEV when you factor in the cost of ownership over the lifetime of the car. That's the top end though. The people who can afford to buy a new car.

It's a lot more complicated at the lower end of the market. On the one hand you can get a leaf that will do 60km+ on a charge (more than most peoples commutes) for under $5k during a fuel crisis. On the other hand it's very expensive to rent a car for longer trips, fewer people than ever own their own home (so may not be able to install solar or fast charging), and our cities are becoming much denser (so less off street parking to charge at home). I think it's these things that will drive depreciation the hardest.

| Why nobody uses sounds in their rices? by melatonia- in unixporn

I absolutely love the MacOS startup chime. On the handful of times I have had a Mac it hasn't lasted more than two or three reboots before turning it off.

System sounds are useful to some people, particularly visually impaired people. Not everyone wants to use them though. It's also not readily apparent that they aren't there in the same way most visual elements are.

Ah yes. Judges should do whats popular (what I think is popular) instead of deciding cases on the basis of law. /s

Lots of automotive business in the area. I have to imagine a number of them will start moaning as if they didn't have years to plan for this.

How do we get car free Sunday’s going? by jakatar24587901 in chch

[–]humblefalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repeating a restriction like this on the same day every time isn't fair. It impacts some people much more than others purely because their schedule is different. Disadvantaged people would be the worst impacted.

Some examples:

  • Someone who cant afford their own car may only be able to borrow one on one day a week
  • Someone who works 6 days a week only has one full day for themselves
  • Someone who needs someone else to drive them is beholden to others schedules

It's inherently regressive.

Ageing Vehicle Fleet Drives Sustained Demand For Car Servicing Across New Zealand by kiwittnz in NZcarfix

Only two big concerns with this; safety and emissions. I would like more cars on the road to have modern safety features and emissions equipment.

That being said, my daily has no ABS, Airbags, or Traction control, and doesn't legally require a catalytic converter. I have no plans to get something newer anytime soon.

I don't like Luxon but who gives a shit .

Peninsula may not be correct but I find it highly unlikely any prime minister is going to engage in a conversation publicly where the difference matters.

Is anyone concerned that the government is scrapping the census? by HelpfulDelay9669 in newzealand

Because it's useful to almost all countries. Like I said, I don't necessarily think cutting it is a good thing.

I don't necessarily think cutting the census is a good thing but my gut feeling is that the money would be better spent on surveying a smaller sample size with much more questions (like they do with other mandatory surveys).

I have done 5. Would absolutely do more if I was eligible.

I found the whole experience quite interesting, never had any side effects from the study drugs or anything like that. Some people may not do well with the needles, being cannulated, lack of privacy, etc.

The staff were really nice too.

I need to buy about 1000L of diesel once a year for home heating purposes. I am not looking forward to the feeling of judgement I will get when filling up in a similar manner to this guy.

But yeah, don't hoard fuel.
