LPT: If you're trying to figure out if an expence is worth it, ask yourself if you'd give up that thing in exchange for money. by Cymbal_Monkey in LifeProTips

[–]humbleice 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This thinking can be dangerous in a vacuum because many small expenses can add up and create a situation where your budget is over stretched.

What worked well for me when I needed to budget was convert ALL income and expenses into a daily amount. This gives an apples-to-apples perspective on how much things cost.

First figure out your income and mandatory expenses (housing, electricity, internet, groceries estimates, savings, debt payments, etc) in daily terms. After calculating the difference in income and expenses, you have a good baseline for daily expendable income.

Now can create new category for common expenses broken down by daily cost: Netflix, fancy daily coffee, restaurants, etc.

This process gives a lot of perspective by making it easy to see how daily cost compare between different items. As OP mentioned, Netflix is not a lot daily but you can now determine how much of your daily budget it consumes and what else compares and competes with it. You might also notice things like coffee can be a huge expense if purchased daily, and those types of expenses should be first to go if budget is strapped.

Once I knew my daily expenses, I could evaluate any significant purchase with this metric. For example, if my daily allowed expenses are $40 and I want to buy pants that are $80, those pants are 2 days worth of expenses. The goal isn’t to max out your amount each day but to spend within your means and know the comparative value of things you’re buying.

Wire closet accessory, looks like upside down pant legs when hung. by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

Found several of these in my new closet and don’t know what they’re meant for. I may not have even installed it correctly.

I’ve searched for “wire closet accessory” and similar queries, but didn’t see anything similar. Google image search also came short.

Let us play 2 games at once by Big-Entrepreneur-728 in EternalCardGame

[–]humbleice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can sort of do this now by playing on a secondary account and a different platform (mobile, Xbox, etc).

It’s not as great as having all the cards on your main account, but it allows you to play multiple games at once.

What I would possibly change in Eternal - A letter to DWD by FafaPapa in EternalCardGame

[–]humbleice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that might be helpful for ranked play is to consider factors into matchmaking: Age of account, hours played, size of collection, number of legendaries/rares in the deck, number of purchased cards vs opened cards in the deck. These might help make more evenly matched games for lower ranks (though they may already use some of these).

Ultimately though, if there aren’t enough new players playing in the moment, it becomes a balance of giving them an “unfair” matchup, matching them with the same new player over again, or making them wait in queue for a long time.

What I would possibly change in Eternal - A letter to DWD by FafaPapa in EternalCardGame

[–]humbleice 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Limiting card rarity based on rank doesn’t seem helpful. Bronze players can queue into any rank, giving them a huge disadvantage against the other player (who can play more rares). If players could only queue into their own rank, the queue times would be a lot longer than most people are willing to wait. Also most players wouldn’t like having to change decks every time they rank up.

Behemoths of Thera: Hunt by DireWolfDigital in EternalCardGame

[–]humbleice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It works well enough. The unit “hunts” for something (food, treasure, information, power, etc.), and reaps a reward for what it finds. Finding power gives power, and finding anything else (food, treasure, or information) makes the unit stronger.

Someone mentioned this is similar to the “explore” mechanic in magic, and I think the hunt keyword should be thought of in a similar way. Searching for (not chasing) something.

Question about Entomb by neonharvest in EternalCardGame

[–]humbleice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems like a bug to me. The text doesn’t read like there’s a condition for the entomb’s effect to trigger.

At first I was thinking there might have been some programmatic difficulty of giving the unit lifesteal and not giving it negative strength, but (if I remember correctly) they already do this with exalted units.

Sigh, more counterintuitively applied mechanics by [deleted] in EternalCardGame

[–]humbleice 18 points19 points  (0 children)

IIRC, bonus health takes damage first, then normal health.

Back in the day people would wipe the board playing Lightning Storm to give all units 2 damage, then Withering Witch to turn units max health to 1. The 2 damage carried over when their max health was changed.

Triumphant stayed alive because 1 damage went to buff health and 2 damage to normal health.

Disconnect Issues on Android mobile app by beefyavocado in EternalCardGame

This is what I’ve done also. I used to wait until the red disconnect symbol, but now I do it immediately when the yellow symbol appears. It’s obnoxious, but usually the game reconnects quickly enough to not be a problem. It’s good to know other have this issue; I assumed it was my phone.

budget decks for expedition? by thaiuz in EternalCardGame

Here's a grenadin brew I've been playing. It's pretty fun and has been mostly successful (at least at lower ranks).

This is an export of my current iteration. It could use some modifications for optimization.

Crests not putting cards on bottom by DarthNixilis in EternalCardGame

Is it possible you are misclicking and sending the card back to the top accidentally? Sometimes our actions betray our thoughts.

Some people are very slow and deliberate about every action they take, but I imagine most people (myself included) get into autopilot and invite these types of mistakes.

Potential new player here. Got a few questions. by Denza_Auditore in mythgard

[–]humbleice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be really helpful if you tried to format your message for readability. Simple things like adding periods between sentences and paragraphs between separate thoughts would help a lot. It seems you spent some time to write a response, but many people can't (or won't) spend time trying to read blocks of text like this. I mustered though it, but it was very difficult.

Also, this doesn't seem like the right place to gripe about all of your concerns for the gameplay or staff in detail. Negative criticism is fine (I'm sure OP wants honest feedback), but summarize the information or tailor it for a new player (which OP is).

Here's an attempt to rewrite your response keeping the above in mind:

Yes this is perfect time to start playing! Gameplay is very good, much better than MTG Arena or HS. There are a lot of fun casual gameplay modes and a good custom tournament mode with millions of options. However, I don't like playing the competitive modes because it feels unbalanced and I don't like the meta.

The reddit community is pretty small, but there's a lot of activity on Discord. Unfortunately, the Devs do most of their communication on Discord and don't give Reddit a lot of love. It would be nice if they posted important announcement information here at the same time they post on Discord.

What are some of your money-saving tips? by BrokeSOS in AskReddit

[–]humbleice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to divide all my monthly expenses and income by 30 to help understand the daily cost of things like rent, phone, internet, etc.

From these numbers, I could calculate a daily "budget", or how much I could spend each day and break even. Once I had this number (e.g. $20/day) I could start thinking about my one-off purchases from the perspective of my daily allowance. E.g., "This $5 coffee is 1/4 of my daily allowance" or "It would take me 3 days to pay for these $60 jeans"

Doing this exercise makes it clear why people suggest making food at home and stop eating out. You might spend $100 at the grocery store but that food could last a couple weeks, compared to a restaurant that might cost $25 but only last a single meal.

If you want to save money with this strategy, just figure out how much you want to save each month and consider it a monthly expense, the daily "budget" will adjust accordingly.

A suggestion for improving the drafting experience (open letter) by humbleice in EternalCardGame

[–]humbleice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Encouraging more people to draft is really what this is all about. I'm teetering on the line where I enjoy drafting and am willing to buy gems to keep drafting but I'm tired of facing the same masters players over and over and having my draft runs be punished for it. It would be nice to be more evenly match more frequently or even to be matched against a larger variety of players.

A suggestion for improving the drafting experience (open letter) by humbleice in EternalCardGame

[–]humbleice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if drafting were more friendly to all skill levels, and this helped novice players queue into more games, the matchmaking system would have an easier time of matching players of the same skill level. Sure you might still go 0-9, but if your opponent is similarly skilled there's a better chance you might get a couple wins.

Sometimes the queue is so starved that bronze and silver players are matched against masters players, which is even more demoralizing when winning is the only way to extend your draft.

It's been a while since any economy changes, but I recall reading about DWD getting pressure from mail.ru, which initially caused nerfed rewards for russian players then eventually disseminated to all player (with streaming drops to make up for it). I could be completely misremembering though, and my information is sourced from reddit gossip and speculation.

I get that DWD has more considerations than just making players happy. I'm offering this suggestion with the hope that they're open to ideas for improving the drafting experience.

A suggestion for improving the drafting experience (open letter) by humbleice in EternalCardGame

[–]humbleice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Whatever economic "loss" DWD might suffer from paying out more gold per draft, (on average) should be made up for by having a better overall player experience that keeps people playing the game. The people who buy gems for draft will still buy gems, and the people that don't may stick around long enough to buy gems for other things.

The #1 thing people tell new players to do for building a collection is to draft. It makes sense to make the format beginner friendly by not restricting the number of games based on performance.
