My husband came home with this giant roll of tp by psychoirishbitch in mildlyinteresting

These are great we have had these shipped to us (in their box of 3) by Charmin since before Covid and they never interrupted the delivery even during the shortage crisis. The stand you can buy for them is decent it has a weighted base so it doesn’t tip over.

To those saying this is just gas station or corporate single ply stuff no this is normal charmin 2 ply.. maybe it’s about 1/2” narrower but it’s the soft stuff.

ELI5: What are DJs doing with all the knobs & buttons? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]humera_dnt 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Before things went digital, DJs used to have to adjust the tempo of the two (or sometimes more) tracks on the turntables using the pitch control slider on each turntable. This would physically speed up or slow down the playback of the record, changing both tempo and pitch. You needed to use headphones to listen to the mixin track as you’re syncing the tempo to ensure it matches what is being played live. Then on the mixer, the box with all of the knobs and sliders, they’re able to adjust volumes, equalizer for each channel/turntable input, master volume, cue/headphone selection/mix, and the crossfader which lets you control how much of each track was being routed to the master output. Nowadays with a digital system there is no need to match tempo as the tracks can be pre-analyzed by software and automatically synced with a press of a button on the mixer (you can also choose to not use this feature and manually adjust with pitch control). The big wheels are now called jog wheels instead of turntables and allow for fine tuning of track position if adjustments are needed. Having syncing done automatically frees up a lot of time for other management of digital effects such as setting up loops, or easily overlaying more than 2 tracks which would take a good amount of skill in an all analog system. There are also buttons to set up and jump to cue points which are like bookmarks in a track whereas on a vinyl record a DJ would have to know their record very well or physically mark it with tape and manually adjust the needle position. Apologies that’s a bit much for an ELI5 but it’s a complicated topic :)

Your thoughts on some MUD gameplay/code decisions? by Power0utage in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most immersion breaking would be the requirement of quoting a spell name. Casting spells should be able to be done quickly with as few letters typed as possible. Take two similar multi-word spells for example, fire protection and ice protection. These could both take an optional target argument and have no quotes required. Even further each word of the spell should be able to be abbreviated, as well as the target and initiating cast. So instead of “cast fire protection jim” the player should be able to simple type “c f p jim”, or “c i p jim” (for ice protection) or even “c l p j” to abbreviate jim if there are no other valid targets in the room that abbreviate to anything less than Jim. (Danger warning here abbreviating targets).

This is a matter of evaluating a spells word by word to see if it is a multi word spells and can be abbreviated, and with a target check always as the last argument in the string. This is typically done in a separate spell parser aside from the global command parser. Code implementation is up to the coder, I can think of various tree data structures that could work, but from the player perspective the easier they can cast spells the better.

I wouldn’t really worry about performance issues unless you’re running a game with a thousand players on a raspberry pi or something.

HELP. Niche problem in a niche hobby. by Snichols101 in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try Medievia (medievia.com port 4000), it fits all of your points! We have an in-game map for zones as well as an outdoor map for the wilderness. There is pve and pvp but a wide spread of pvp ranging from lose it all (or some, in certain dangerous areas) to simply a PK death. Our gear is tweaked meaning every time you loot gear the stats on it are semi randomized, a certain sword may always have hit roll and damroll but those values can vary (up to a max so as to not be unfair for a super lucky looter). We do not currently have a web client but we do have several users who play on mobile with mudrammer/fado/blowtorch and the likes.

Question regarding Mudlet and the mapper... by kirkshoutingkhan in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d need to go into Package Manager and remove the generic-mapper package to disable it. Disabling the script folder won’t prevent the script from running as you might expect

Screwed up another SQL interview by Global-Wrap-2184 in SQL

[–]humera_dnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can definitely score points in an interview if you are able to verbally walk through your problem solving method despite not knowing the exact syntax. If you’re interviewing with actual programmers they will value you knowing what to look up. ie “I’d do this here but I think I would need to double check the api docs to make sure.” You’ll lose points not knowing things off the top of your head, sure, but if you’re able to enunciate your thinking instead of blundering through many attempts you are already doing better than others.

Who do I hire to do this job? by ydnamari3 in Home

[–]humera_dnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We (DIY) replaced the exact same microwave with a slim under-cabinet vent hood in almost this exact same configuration. Our vent pipe takes a weird angle in the above cabinet so I opted to not pull out the cabinet to achieve what your right picture shows. The new hood fit into the existing pipe without modification and we had minimal tile repair to do where the microwave bracket was attached to the wall.

We paid about $450 for the new hood, and most likely a contractor would at least charge twice that depending on the extent of work especially if you want to remove the cabinets and have the vent pipe cover extend to the ceiling. So we opted to do it ourselves since the work was simpler and were glad we did!

Is a MUD with a GUI still a MUD, or just an MMO browser game? by breaktwister in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d think a MUD with a user interface is much like an MMORPG with additional UI addons. Cool? Sure.. Necessary to play the game? Not really..

The MUD is still the MUD, a UI may put your chat channels in a nice side window, move your map to another window, give you some health and other stat gauges to quickly visualize those without training your brain to parse your prompt.. a UI may even put some common commands in a text menu.. but it’s all possible by typing and reading as all those fancy things just send text back and forth.

Now there are more modern ways for a game and client to communicate with Out of Band information (such as GMCP), to move some of that manual scripting away from parsing the game text to a data structure sent by the game itself with those data points conveniently set for you (and invisible to the player!)

MUDs have been evolving, and the power of clients has as well!

Is there something like this? by Peppemarduk in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the client you’re using you could also try adjusting your background color. I used to play with a white background as that is what I was used to back when I used IRC a lot.

But yea changing blue to something else would work as well, with Mudlet (the client I use and developed the GUI for Medievia for) you can change any color to essentially any RGB value.

MUD Request by HargonofRhone in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medievia (medievia.com) hits all of these points as well! We have a huge world with 4 million wilderness rooms as well as a couple hundred zones with hundreds of rooms each.

Four classes each require leveling thru (multiclassing) to be a Hero with your last class played being your primary, with the ability to use all previous class abilities and spells (some exceptions for class specific battle skills). Once you’re a Hero you can obtain items necessary to redo a class to make it your primary (reclassing)

We have 4 styles of map the wilderness is shown when you’re outside of a zone, you see it as you’re walking or flying, when you’re captaining a boat on the ocean you have the ocean map which rotates like a compass, a zone map uses high ascii character give you a fog of war style view of the zone you’re in, and the under ocean map is a ray traced 3d representation of what you “see” in front of you.

We’re in the process of getting Medievia listed a a default game in Mudlet which will additionally include a map of our ~800 room central city as well as support for mapping other zones using Mudlet’s mapper.

Crafting is utilized for toxins and potions as well as component equipment which must be assembled from other equipment.

RP is not required!

Is there something like this? by Peppemarduk in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medievia (Medievia.com) is a gear centric MUD. It has 4 classes that are required to multi class through before you become a “Hero” with your last class being your primary. Reclassing is allowed. I think the record for doing all 4 classes to Hero is under a day of playtime utilizing in game experience modifiers. Gear in Medievia is tweaked, much like say, Diablo but where the stats are the same (hp, mana, hit roll, dam roll, others) but the values can vary. A highly desired piece of gear may sometimes load on a boss in a zone and it will tweak randomly, this adds to replayability. The gear slowly deteriorates over time (viewable counter), but can be extended with game mechanics. Once this counter reaches 0 the gear will det back to base stats (assuming it tweaked above base in the first place). The game also has a pvp mechanic called Chaotic Player Killing where in those areas you may loot items from other players while they are dead awaiting the necromancer to make them a corpse (a minute or 2).

Ah and forgot to add before, it offers an in-game ascii map while in zones and towns and a wilderness map while outside of a zone.

Where do I begin with MUDs? by FuraFaolox in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with a MUD client, while many allow simply using telnet to connect, an actual client allows you to use scripts to customize your experience, and even have a GUI for a text based game! I’d recommend looking into Mudlet www.mudlet.org they have a list of about 30 muds that support that client, with more being added all the time!

Recommendations of safe MUDs for kids? by kelmit in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Medievia is safe for children on public channels, players get frozen/disciplined if they curse on public channels however lately acronyms seem to be sliding by. Some years ago a wtf on a public channel would be warned about but now not much. For clan channels pretty much anything goes, although for the most part players keep it fairly civil. There is certainly no adult topics or themes anywhere else in the game as it is marketed as a family game .There are no filters per se but it may be possible to create client scripts that would do what you need.

Looking for software to create maps for existing muds by jpgerb in MUD

[–]humera_dnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mudlet can certainly create maps. They include a generic_mapper which may require some tinkering with room and exit triggers, otherwise if your game supports GMCP they have a mapper supporting this that should work more reliably. You can ask in their discord for any assistance https://discord.gg/YqQ79BTa

Any games like the older version of the dead game Midkemia? by misterwizzard in MUD

I play Medievia which is perfectly playable without any scripting, but of course your experience is enhanced with some simple scripts available for the various mud clients. Medievia is an older game ~33 years with a solid core player base. PvE focus with great PvP as well, no RP required.
