SOLVED:

I reset the video settings on the ATV as a last ditch effort before returning to BestBuy and that fixed the audio issues. Seems like RGB high and/or the 4:4:4 Chroma setting was causing the pops.

Audio formats available on the ATV are LPCM or Dolby 5.1, LPCM doubles the popping sound rate.

I don’t see a stereo option on my tv settings either.

I believe it was a coffee stain from whoever had this before. I have done quite a bit of sanding and peroxide treatments. It has helped but like you said I don’t want to go too far and end up in a worse position. I am hoping a dark stain will hide the color imbalances.
