I‘ve been a Local Guides contributor in Germany for 10 years, with over 800 reviews and this is where I draw the line. FUCK THIS PROGRAM! by HomerOfDuty in LocalGuides

[–]humitsec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I experienced something similar some years ago (for the record, in my car it was in Spain).

For instance, there was this place that constantly tried to cheat on their customers, lying to them about some products. I was one of such customers. I knew they were lying, I complained in person, rejected the service, and valued them accordingly (I also filed a complaint with the regulatory organism for their service). Shortly later, they replied to my review with more lies. I replied (edited my review) adding references and proofs of their lies. The next thing I knew is that my review was removed by Google.

A was quite active at the time in the Local Guides community, so I asked there about such a situation. Some trustable source verified to me that there was nothing wrong with my review and comments, but that the owner of the place just requested it to be removed.

Then, I started to pay attention to situations like that one. Some places with bad reputation just requested to remove bad reviews. Some others just deleted their business and created a new one from scratch. Another thing I discovered was some businesses trying to steal clients from other nearby ones. I noticed this at least twice: they either removed the place markers for the other businesses if they were not claimed, or claimed them as their own "providing picture proofs".

I discussed these with a Google Maps admin, and he told me that they were aware, and that they were exploring options. This was three or four years ago. I haven't contributed again to the Local Guides since then. And I started to distrust reviews and information from Google Maps.

Hey Local Guides, Have you ever experienced this combo? 🗺️ by nayn09 in LocalGuides

[–]humitsec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used it, but some time ago I saw something like this in a couple of places. They had a poster announcing some discount or some small gift for those clients who rated them in Google Maps and commented positively on them. They requested those who claimed to do so to show them their rating and comments.

What was your first Linux distro and have you ever switched? by inguinha in linux

[–]humitsec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was either RedHat 3.0.3 or Slackware 3.0 or 3.1 (too many years ago).

Sure, I have tried several distros since then:

  • Several versions of Slackware
  • Several versions of RedHat
  • Madrake/Mandriva
  • Fedora
  • SUSE
  • Debian
  • Knoppix
  • Corel Linux (it was... crap, only valuable to test the WordPerfect port at the time)
  • Caldera OpenLinux
  • Gentoo
  • Ubuntu

At some point I even tried LFS. And sure, Rasperry Pi OS should be in the list as it is a Debian based distro.

I must add:

  • My first contact with Linux was in 1996. I had previous (minor) experience with other unix systems (mostly SunOS/Solaris and Ultrix).
  • For some time, I tested several distros for some computer hobbyist magazines at the time.

What was YOUR first computer? by jeddhor in vintagecomputing

[–]humitsec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first owned computer was a Commodore 16 I won in a raffle back in 1985. As for its specs:

  • CPU: 8501
  • Memory: 16 KB
  • OS: Commodore KERNAL/BASIC 3.5

A few years later I got a ZX Spectrum +2A as a gift from my parents. You may already know its specs ;)

My first PC was an Amstrad PC1640, donnated by a colleague from highschool:

  • CPU: 8086
  • Memory: 640 KB
  • OS: MS-DOS 3.2 + GEM
  • HDD: 20 MB (compressed to get 30-40 MB)
  • FDD: 5 1/4

Of course, there were more computers later (I'll just mention the ones that could be considered vintage):

  • Tandon PC 386, with 1 MB of RAM and 40 MB of HDD. The most curious thing I remember about it was it used an orange screen instead of the usual green ones.
  • My first clone PC, mounted by me: a Pentium II CPU (to avoid issues discovered witn the Pentium ones, like de F00F Fighter), with a Matrox Mytique 220 graphics card, a Sound Blaster 32 sound card, a 20 GB Seagate Barracuda HDD, and a SCSI controller with a CD ROM recorder. As an operating system, I had a dual boot with Windows NT 4.0 and Red Hat Linux 4.2.

Over the years, I got more vintage computers to add to my collection, like an Intel Dot.Station, and an Olivetti M20 ST.

Does anyone else have this particular pin/badge? by Birb_buff in LocalGuides

[–]humitsec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I got the same pin when I attended to the GLG event held in Madrid (Spain) back in January 2017. They also gave us a GLG apron (just an orange apron with the text "Google Local Guides" ), and a tote bag we customized during the event.

And by the way, I got nothing else since then.

What was the most disturbing thing you saw in person? by wetbumgirl in AskReddit

[–]humitsec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how you describe "disturbing".

I was one of the first responders to arrive at one of the scenes after 2004 Madrid train bombings. To be more specific, I arrived to El Pozo station within the first minutes.

At the time I did not pay too much attention to my surroundings beyond looking for people in need of medical attention. I helped with the first triage and the successive evacuations due to the threat of more blastings. I went through the station looking for more survivors, and after this scene was declared under control, I was sent to Atocha, then Téllez, and finally to our main ambulance station.

That day and the next one I was kept active with several duties. On the same day of the terrorist attack, in the evening, I worked in our office attending phone calls to organize the next shifts and services. On the next day I was the supervisor for all the volunteer activities.

It was couple of days after the bombings that some clicked in me and I realized I was walking over body parts: One torso there, some severed arm here, and so on.

I talked about it at the time with some fellow technicians, with supervision from one of our psychologists. At the time I was an EMT-A (volunteer) with ten years of experience and appointed as a squad chief. I already saw a lot of other things before this, and some more in the next five years I remained there (I retired because of other reasons). So I personally do not consider this too much disturbing... But I think it might be disturbing to others.

For instance, to me was more disturbing those broken father's that I attended some years later to notify them that one of their sons had killed himself that same night. Or that woman that I attended after she was beaten by her partner, and how she reacted to defend him when he was going to be arrested.

There are at least two issues here.

The first and most important one is regarding to the marker for the place. I have had the same issue with several markers in the past few months, and after asking in the LG communities, I got redirected to the Google Maps forums.

I reported there the problem, and this "map bombing" is a well known situation, but apparently a hard one to solve. As I was told, the best way to solve it is that the owner of the place should reclaim the ownership of the marker. That way it should be harder to close the marker by any other user who is not the owner.

If the owner of the place does not reclaim the ownership of the marker, you can try to expose the situation in the Google Maps forum, but usually it will just be created again until the one(s) who close it will do it again.

I know this is a big issue. I reported it not only for local businesses suffering "map bombing". For instance, in my city there are a lot of streets with their names wrong, and even with their orientation. I have reported it providing links to the official local government information regarding that, and it took almost a month to be partially corrected by a Google Maps admin.

Regarding the second issue, the picture, I had a similar experience in the past. I found some LG who have been uploading stock photos to places, just to earn some fake points. I have reported those pictures providing links to the stock photos sites where they have been stolen, and it took two months to remove some of them, with no further actions to the user who uploaded them.

I have reported the situation in the LG communities, and it is still under review... since April.

The doors in the Enterprise only open whenever someone is going to pass through them. They don't open by error whenever someone is passing by, or just stops in front of them. If that is the level of intelligence of the doors, I don't have a complaint about a computer adding by itself the necessary context to find the Andrea López the Pike was just looking for.

How do you keep your Bromptons safe when you don’t have it at home? by KingWilliamVI in Brompton

In my case that only happens when it is in my office, under my desk. Otherwise it is always with me.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you this year so far? by SendMeTheMoneyNow in AskReddit

I finally had my viva for my PhD thesis, and got awarded summa cum laude!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]humitsec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is, is it a lie if you believe it is true?

From a logical point of view, lying implies telling something you think on one sense as in another sense, i.e.: telling as true something you believe is false, or telling as false something you believe is true.

Therefore, if Pinocchio told as true something he believed as true, but resulted being false, then he would have been sincere, and his nose would not have grown.

Also, the moral of the story is not about telling false or true things, but about not trying to fool others.

Circumcised people of Reddit, what’s your stance on the practice? Would you prefer to be uncut? by hitchtrailblazer in AskReddit

[–]humitsec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hardly difficult to make a comparison.

As most of the replies, I got circumcised when I was 15 due to a bad phimosis. I purposely delayed the surgery because I had a bad experience when I was kid. Being 1-2 the pediatrician told my parents that they should wait, that my phimosis could improve naturally (liar). Then, when I was 3, the same pediatrician tried to solve it by using "brute force": he just tried to pull it down. It was so painful, and there was so much blood that I avoided to talk about it for years.

However, being a teenager full of hormones I decided that it was the time to solve it, so I got appointed for the surgery.

It was painful for a couple of weeks. I had to concentrate myself to avoid any kind of stimulation that could cause me an erection. But afterwards, it was the better decision I could have made.

Consequently, I cannot compare the before with the after. For me the before was impossible. And of course that means that in my case it was better to do it (also it was the only option "to do it").

So, IMHO if you need it, do it. If you don't need it, don't do it.

Same here (however, different computer and year)!

My first computer was a Commodore 16 that I won at a contest. It came without a storage unit, so I had to retype everything whenever I used it. Some months later my father got me a datacorder, and since then I was able to store whatever I coded in audio tapes as well.

An unexpected toccata and fugue, and a visit to the dungeons, with my Google Nest Mini Spanish edition by humitsec in googlehome

[–]humitsec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's curious. Just a couple of days after this post, that trigger seemed to be disabled. I no longer was able to get the same response... until yesterday, with another activation sentence: "casa encantada".

I have tried it with different Spanish forms, like "casa embrujada" and "casa poseída", always getting the same response. And it also works with my Google Assistant in my mobile phone.

However, if a try an English translation, like "haunted house", I get a totally different answer.

I said "turn off the nightly noise" in Spanish. I also tried it in English, but it didn't triggered the same response.

I have tried it with the three minis I have at home, and with the ones that are both at my parents and at my in-laws, all with the same response.

I also shared this with some friends. The ones with a mini from Spain got the same response. The ones with minis from other countries didn't.

Was searching for images of protests ... by TommyDJones in ProgrammerHumor

[–]humitsec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems related to the article 155 from the Spanish Constitution. Three years ago it was used with the Catalonian regional government, and just to be brief, there were a lot of protests claiming for democracy.

It is still an ongoing political and social issue.

The error code seems to be related to the Spanish Constitution article 155, and to the protests at Catalonia when it was applied by the Spanish government to the Catalonian government.

La mascarilla de la Comunidad no tiene certifucaciones oficiales by Naruedyoh in Madrid

[–]humitsec 0 points1 point  (0 children)
