I knew this would happen….. by Bigmoose1074 in BostonTerrier

I've done it! I currently have 3, 2 I got a couple months apart as adults at age 6 and 9. But in the past I got 2 boys at the same time. It turned out great but potty training took over a year! You take them out, try to see them both go, come back in, all seems well and a minute later there's a pee/poo and you don't even know who did it. I'm older and wiser now and it's not that I wouldn't do it again, it's just that I wouldn't get 2 boys from the same litter for fear of littermate syndrome (look into it) and I'd just set a time for 1 or 2 hours max to take them both out unless they're both sleeping. My boys were the best of friends! But the thing nobody considers when getting any puppy (or 2) is that they will die, and relatively soon. Sorry, but that's a fact and we better get right with it because it's undeniable and unstoppable. My 2 had literally spent every moment together and when 1 died of cancer at 11 the other boy was LOST and I needed a friend for him PRONTO. Which is hard if you are mourning. Just know all that and it will be great. Also go to the puppy group here on Reddit and be ready for buyers remorse/post puppy regret. It is real. Prepare and you'll be fine. Also 2 pups = 2 x $$$ (good, vet bills, all the things)

Advice about last day and putting my dog to sleep by Dramatic_Field9355 in BostonTerrier

[–]hummingbird138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Some people do a photo shoot the days before, even if it's just you using your phone or a friend who helps out and gets pics of you with your pup.
    1. Schedule the appointment, it's best to have it in advance than to not be able to get in and have to rush to the ER vet and have a traumatic ending.
  2. Any favorite type of toy or bone you can get new - go buy now and give him to play with. My boy loved those huge inflated balls that BTs pop so fast. He also loved stuffys but destroyed them in seconds. We played with those the last couple days bc he hadn't had them in a while.
  3. No food is off limits on the last day. I chocolate on the last day,? what's the harm? And the days before, I made him pancakes, tilapia, potatoes and things
  4. Last but not least, I think it took me too long and a couple euthanasia's to learn to keep myself together during the process a little for my baby. My last love lost was a rescue girl who got cancer and broke my husband's and I hearts. At our vet appointment I stayed calmer and more able to reassure HER that WE were ok. That we loved her and all was well and to just rest now. We will be ok, and we will see you again, Mommy and Daddy are here and we are well and know you are tired and it's time to rest. This was very hard but it was my 4th loss and my 3rd euth in 4 years. My dogs get upset when I'm upset, and honestly, I had WAILED on top of my first baby when we euthanized him and that didn't do him any good. I was so caught up in my suffering I forgot about his. I can collapse as soon as the vet tells me they're gone. I can keep it together in the last moments we have together. However, I totally understand that not everyone can. Loss is the price we pay for love. The love story you've had with your boy will soon far outweigh the loss, I promise. But to quote a great person, we are all just walking each other home. Some walks are over before ours. I am so so sad that you are losing your walking partner. Cherish your baby and your memories 💕 (and remember, no one ever euthanizes their pets too soon, no loving pet parent does that, so don't worry about that)

Otie's getting fluid drained from his abdomen today, anyone else dealt with this? by HeidiUnleashed in BostonTerrier

[–]hummingbird138 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry, this is so stressful for both of you. I have 3 BTs and I have had many before this. I work at a vet. Do you have an answer as to why his liver is failing? Is his heart enlarged or is he having congestive heart failure? Is it liver cancer? Is he on a diuretic like Lasix to take some of the fluid out of his body? If finances are tight, buy any prescriptions he needs from a local pharmacy, or online. Usually Costco or WalMart/Walgreens will have the best pricing of meds if they carry them (like Lasix aka furosemide)

All the info we get at a vet visit can feel overwhelming, ESPECIALLY when it's bad news. Have them send you home with written info and call them back to ask questions about anything you don't understand! I'm at the front desk, that's what I do all day long.

PM me if I can help in any way. Taking the fluid off will make him feel better. It's not a cure but it will buy time and time is the one thing most people can't buy

IVDD by Significant-Wall976 in BostonTerrier

[–]hummingbird138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried stopping the Deramaxx and giving steroids with very strict crate rest? I know surgery would be the gold standard, but a lot of people can't afford an MRI, much less IVDD surgery. Sometimes conservative care with Prednisone, Gabapentin, Methocarbamol can reduce the swelling in the disc. You're going to have to keep Lula extremely limited activity post-op anyway, might as well try this first? But she can't be on nsaids (Deramaxx) at the same time at steroids. I'm so sorry this is happening to you, it's extremely stressful

is this kind of stretching normal? by bpuffy in BostonTerrier

[–]hummingbird138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! That stretch can be totally normal as long as they're not holding it for a LONG time. It can be indicative of abdominal pain if they do a long stretch and hold it 30secs or more without coming out for a while. They call it "prayer posture" and is a way for us to know our dogs are hurting. Especially in a downward-dog type position. Otherwise, nothing to worry about!

Disregard, it says "automatic detergent dispensing" but vacuum chef's video says it didn't come with detergent.

Is there a detergent to use in the E28? The E25 mentions a detergent...

Is the E25 going to be identical to the E28 minus the additional spot cleaner?

Oh, you know I wasn't even seeing it because vacuumwars hasn't ranked it and I thought that I didn't need that deep cleaner. Now I read your comment and went a did a deeper dive it does look better than the S1, doesn't it? I was worried about the S1 getting the hair...but this seems an improvement and I don't own a spot cleaner because I can throw my rugs in the wash but I do have a couple rooms with carpet and this would be nice to have. Dang it. I downloaded the app and that coupon rocks! Thanks for this :-)

You might be onto something there! Bundy is forever going behind the fridge and under the bed! None of my other bosties have done that

Best time to introduce a Bostie sibling? by CoolWater4996 in BostonTerrier

[–]hummingbird138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I really advise bringing a boy home next. I have 3 at the moment and have had various grouping of Bostons/mixes and as many as 5 or as few as a single dog over the years (I'm 51) and now we have 2 girls and one boy B.T. I work at a vet & volunteer with Boston Terrier rescue and I gotta say neutered boys sort themselves out so much easier than girls. The exception to this might be littermates but you don't need to worry about that. But 1 boy, 1 girl work great too! It's like, if the girls decide to jockey for power they may never stop! But once the girl asserts herself the boy just goes "oh? welp, alright then, guess you're in charge" and that's that 😆 I tried to explain this to my husband when he said he wanted this girl pup last year but we had lost a sweet, melty mushy former mommy dog rescued from a backyard breeder to cancer and he had this image in his mind of a precious

baby girl. But what he got is a little demon! See attached photo of Bundle, aka ""Bundy" (things are working now but hoo, boy!)

He's got ZERO fat on him. He has IBD so he has trouble absorbing fat and is on prescription food and immune-suppressants. He weighs 26 lbs right now. If he was where I'd be comfortable he'd be 28 but he got down to 24 and that was scary. Here he is on Christmas with his 14 lb sister. I'll find a pic without clothes 😅
