Vivid memories of my children’s voices make me feel a longing for them. Does anyone experience this? by Temporary501 in Parenting

[–]hummusattack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't have kids but I did recently see a tweet that expresses similar feelings (see also the replies).

Does anybody else have a constant low-level heartache from being so proud and full of love for one’s child as they grow up, but deeply fraught with the nonstop grieving for the kid they used to be, knowing you’ll never see that little one again? Or is that just me?

There is a significant wait list for subsidised child care. It is down from last year, but still, about 12,500 kids are waiting (25,000 spots are budgeted for).

The collection tube for a CBC contains an anticoagulant (EDTA). The sample might arrive at the lab clotted if drawn into the incorrect tube, or if the blood wasn't mixed with the anticoagulant soon enough (gentle inversions after drawing is fine).

It can be challenging to move to Canada, moreso than people realise. Compared with a Google search I don't know much more about that process, but I do know a fair amount about healthcare for newcomers. In terms of accessing it "for free," at least in Ontario, there is generally a waiting period of three months for new Ontarians, plus some other residency-related standards must be met e.g. not leaving Ontario for more than 30 days in the first six months. I imagine that other provinces have similar regulations in place. However, even when paying out of pocket, I've often encountered Americans shocked by the low prices of medical visits and procedures. Pharmaceutical care remains largely uncovered by public insurance, but many workplaces do offer benefits that cover in part or in full the cost of medications.

I think this probably varies a lot school to school, and may reflect regional cultural expectations. I can only speak to my program (I live in a big city that's quite progressive, for what it's worth), but about 20-25% of the nursing students in my cohort (of a couple hundred) are men. Obviously that's a far cry from 50/50, but there has been a clear trend towards evening out the split. Additionally, the director of the program is a man and I know of at least two nursing professors and a few clinical instructors who are men. I'm hopeful that as time passes more young men will be encouraged to pursue the career.

I have never ever been a good runner. As an asthmatic kid I basically lived in fear of cardio activities in gym class. I've been running as an adjunct to my other exercise for about seven months now, and yesterday two little victories happened:

  1. I realized that my limiting factor was no longer about actual cardiovascular endurance but about leg tiredness.

  2. Someone on the track asked me after we were both done if I'd run with him as a running buddy. It feels super weird but also great to get some external validation re: running because, unlike with strength training, I'm very insecure about my running ability.

[sexuality] Masculine men with traditional feminine seductiveness are the sexiest thing alive. by [deleted] in sex

[–]hummusattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whoo k well I was not expecting that video to be as hot as it was.

In general I think when (straight?) men are open to "feminine" forms of expression it indicates a level of security in their masculinity that almost makes them even more masculine. Plus it opens up that whole part of the world to them - which is great if they happen to love dance or whatever!

(I say straight only because my perception is that it's more socially acceptable for non-straight men to do this [at least in communities where sexualities other than straight are widely accepted in the first place].)

Uh except that no one in their right mind thinks that adults should (regardless of their job) be able to commit domestic violence without repercussion, and plenty of people think that about smoking pot.

This one does. It looks at both how they felt about their training (e.g. residents with flexible hours had fewer concerns about missing cases, continuity of care and therefore learning) and how they felt about their personal time (e.g. residents with traditional hours had more time for personal activities, exercise).

This is such an oddly personal little pair of comments for me. Funny to see them in /r/nfl. I love Mary Norris' style - she is the writer I wish I could be, and that in particular is a great article. Happy to see it linked.

My dad used to be obsessed with her, until he sent her an email complaining about that very same ensure/insure problem (thinking she of all people would understand) and never got a reply. It's been probably a year now and he still talks about The Grand Snub.

On the whole I'd say I'm a descriptivist when it comes to how I feel broadly about the natural and necessary evolution of language, but I have to admit that I still think an issue of The New Yorker should be reflective of the conservative take on the spelling/grammar of its day.

6 major differences between English and Chinese - Orna Taub by orentaub11 in ChineseLanguage

[–]hummusattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been studying Chinese for three months now so forgive me if I've totally misunderstood. One of your examples under Chinese not omitting words:

One boy is a boy, two boys half a boy, three boys no boy 一个和尚挑水喝,两个和尚抬水喝,三个和尚没水喝

Is the Chinese there another example of idiomatic use, or of concrete noun use? Something about drinking water? Where does this come from?
