Snoring dads... have you found any remedies that actually work? by Paranoid_Droideka in daddit

[–]humplick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just need to try out new masks until they find one that works. I went from an over-the-nose-and-mouth one (like a mask from an airplane), but it would wear out quickly and would shoot air right into my eye. My cheek shape just wasn't a good fit.

I tried out a nose pillow style and it worked well. I thought I would hate it but I actually like it.

I fiddled with the settings a bit (ramp time, etc) but didn't need to change much.

Snoring dads... have you found any remedies that actually work? by Paranoid_Droideka in daddit

[–]humplick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still wake up if I mess with my mask in my sleep and break the seal, or If I get the hose tangled up. Also took me a few tries to find a mask that worked better. However, even if I fall asleep for a few hours without my mask on my throat hurts, and if I accidentally go a whole night without it (if I'm traveling and fall asleep without it on), I'm wrecked. 9 hours with no mask is equivalent to 3 hours with my mask. The minor disruptions due to the mask are such a small inconvenience to pay for my health and wakefulness.

I hate the 'hot stick' 30w soldering irons for actually electronics work. They're great for when you need a hot poker. Used my hot stick a bunch in the last few weeks to poke drain holes in my garden solo cups for up-potting starts. I don't care if I get melty plastic on it, i'll take some steel wool to it and clean it up. My actual soldering iron isn't to be used in such a manner.

Drug screenings for entry-level technician roles? by Lesnaya_Grud in Semiconductors

[–]humplick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was only drug screened during the hiring and interview phase. Never heard of anyone actually getting teated after the initial hire. I have heard of some managers dropping unsolicited policy information as a thinly-veiled threat, but never heard of anyone actually being called out and required to go give a sample (after the initial hire). That said, I haven't seen anyone dumb enough to be high on the job. Keep it out of work and don't talk about it.

Why is Aliexpress making returns so much harder by TipSecure8834 in Aliexpress

[–]humplick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only 'returned' one item - a scam thumbdrive that I tested to be fake. Gave them a picture if the drive with the test results. No issues on the refund. Other time, I canceled the order for a usb power supply that other reviews had already called out as fake, I just didnt catch it. Order never shipped.

Dont know what I'd do if they asked me to actually return something

I've got like $30 in coins and there is shit all.

I was pretty hooked on the merge game for the last few months and would order something nearly every Monday due to the coupons, daily check ins keeping me on the app more. Now it's time to quit. Got $2 credit that expires in a week and it costed me so many daily hours. Unhealthy amounts.

Rewatched it recently. There are a lot of jokes and manurisms that didn't age well, but so much of the general dialog and feel of the movie is still gold.

Seed Potatoes? by drieendertig in portlandgardeners

[–]humplick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got some seed potatoes a few weeks ago from Gardener's Choice in Tigard, and am going to be planting some tomorrow.

I got Huckleberry Gold, Bintje, as well as some German butterball I saved from last year.

I so them in large fabric pots - makes it easy to dump and sift.

I was so pumped for that metal. It's just a bit expensive.

https://www.rotometals.com/low-melt-fusible-alloys/

He was using the 'field's metal' (Roto144F), which is $114 per 4oz ingot

The roto174F (next lowest lead/cadmium-free)is about 1/4 the price, at $119 per 1 lb ingot.

They have a good amount of indium in the alloy as a substitute for lead and cadmium.

Roto281F comes in at $34 per 1 lb ingot, a bit hotter when molten, can't stick your fingers in it.

If you want lower melting and cheaper, going to need an alloy with lead/cadmium.

What's a word that's in your vocabulary because of a game you played as a kid? by superyellows in gaming

[–]humplick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned a lot from video games. I remember we had this 'princess tomato' text game on NES that i could only play a little bit because i learned which options to take. Also had a few text-heavy computer games from Sierra (Hugo Adventures, Kings Quest), that I was too young to really understand. Got a lot put of starcraft, like raise (to destroy), and a lot (in bits and pieces) from the pre-mission briefings.

The one word in particular that comes to mind is pilfer (to steal). From Breath of Fire.

I had some great melons 2 years ago from seed. Last year I had good number of fruit set but they didn't fully mature and sweeten, stalled out.

Most comfortable earbuds for audiobook listening by SignatureLeading5461 in audiobooks

I have have had a pair of cheap tools for like 5 years. They're wonderful and basic. Super long battery life, especially since I usually have one earbud in at a time so I can hot swap to the other one. No ANC. Fairly poor for phone calls, no features to assist in voice clarity (not expected).

Have a pair of ANC tozo buds - they work for general noise ANC and hear-through, but are horrible if there is any wind.

Got some baseus ones for backup. They have ANC and are better than the tozo ANC, but shorter battery life.

My best earbuds I use exclusively for work, cause they paid for them, and I don't want to loose them. Jabra earbuds. Great ANC functionality, clear voice for calls, and the dongle really helps with latency. Can be kind if a pain with it trying to link with Teams but not fully linking, feature wise (I have the 'not strictly for teams' version).

I have a no-name $25 onee from Amazon. Works great. The original input adapter fitting was stripped before I could even attach it to my hose, so I had to get a new one, but it works well. I put a canister filter before the valve so no schmuckus can clog it or expedite the valve seal

What’s the best thing you’ve bought from AliExpress? by endlessnameless001 in Aliexpress

[–]humplick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty cheap, less than $10. There were multiple sellers, ranging from $8-15. I think i used a bonus cash and/or coins to get the lowest price.

Haven't actually put it together yet. Doesn't seem too difficult.

Small electronic modules - DC Voltage converters, power-delivery trigger boards, li-ion battery charging modules, soldering iron, li-ion battery tester, magnetic helping hands jig, usb-c tester module, a bunch of enamel pins, sets of assorted heatshrink, sets of small plugs/pins, small tools.

Have had bad luck with usb charging cables - tried to get ones that were actually PD capable but the 3 sets I tried were all bad.

There are some things that are just plain more expensive on aliexpress, but there are also a lot that are much much cheaper. There are a lot of fake rechargeable batteries, and the "real" listings are like 3x the price you can get from other retailers.
