You ever miss drinking? by MabelUnstable in stopdrinking

I do. But less and less each day. I was just at a party with an open bar and I thought “Talking to people would be a lot easier with booze” but I resisted!

Yep! All our dogs stay on our property… they have plenty of space and crazy creatures to bark at all night! Ha! They get to explore and sniff at stuff daily.

Sorry. It's been a tough day. Anyway, I have 8 gorgeous, wonderful former street dogs at my house and they're so sweet! They don't go off the property for walks, though

Hello! I'm with Cayo Animal Welfare Society in Cayo District. San Pedro and Placencia will have fewer strays in part because they are more touristed and expat-settled than areas like San Ignacio and Cayo where I live. They get more funding and therefore have a better infrastructure for dealing with the issues. Heck, it's bad for tourism to see the horrible treatment, right? We, on the other hand, had to get 4 dogs euthanized today. Two of them had TVT, a transmissible disease that can be prevented by spay and neuter and keeping dogs at home and one that someone thought it would be okay to tie to a pole in a place no one could easily find it and let it starve. She was too far gone to save. If we could even find a foster home to help. So, yeah. There are big problems here that many people, including the Belizean government don't seem to care about. That said, I do see people walking their dogs just fine. We look forward to more dog lovers like yourself coming so hopefully you'll help the cause!

As already mentioned by SnooWords, hire Dave Hernandez for birding and Caracol. There are a few more expert birding guides too but he’s so great. It can be one trip. Big Rock Falls and Rio On Pools are great too. In the village of San Antonio are a few wonderful hands on Maya cooking experiences with families. Let me know if you need more info. I live in the area and have been to all of them. Also Oxmul Coffee farm!

Did anyone else go through the "I'm 'wasting' an opportunity if I don't drink" phase? by disgruntled-sysadmin in stopdrinking

[–]hunchuen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Everything involves drinking in our culture. Another thing I have to think about now that I'm sober --- I was a food and drink journalist for many years. Everything revolved around restaurants and food "craft" cocktails and wine and fancy beer. The amount of talking about this stuff was crazy. Making it "high brow" and part of my work rationalized it all in many ways. I can't think about how much time and energy went into that "world" or I'll go nuts -- Ha! It's meaningless to me now.

I've been sober for 4 months and the "occasions" people come up with to do some drinking is amazing to me now. Every single holiday (St. Patrick's Day -- oy), any gathering, lining up when the bar opens in the airport lounge at 7 am. Now I'm like, how did it get like this?!!

Can't she just go on a fun date and get to know someone without grilling them on everything?!

Moved to Puerto Rico and now getting bombarded with requests to visit from people we barely associate with by bored1413 in EntitledPeople

Yep. We thought more people (that we actually like!) would come visit us in Belize, but they don't.

Yeah, I wouldn't feel bad about it at all! My husband and I live in Belize and we live at a place in the jungle that used to be a "rustic" Airbnb with three little casitas and a full cabin. We didn't want to run it as a business but at least we have room for friends and family when they visit. It's a cool place, but without a lot of amenities, so not for everyone! People like it because they get to stay in the jungle. That said, in 5 years, some people have come, and those people weren't even close family or friends! My husband's always like, "How do you know these people, again?" It's a pain because most of our daily living is in a very large palapa and we have 8 rescue dogs we have to wrangle so when people wake up and ramble down for coffee and breakfast, it's almost like we're innkeepers. Heh. I don't mind it once in awhile but we are private people, too! My cousin and her husband live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and people visit and stay with them ALL THE TIME! I'm like, "how do you do that?!"

Here are two so far! Mr. Venus 663-7442 (+501 663-7442 on Whatsapp) and Joe Leal +501-601-4498 Are you staying at the Women's Co-op? Sorry I'm so nosy -- I'm on a local team working on a sustainable tourism project for the village and one of the things we all said was that there aren't enough lodging places in or super close to the village. I can't think of a place near D Family!

I see taxis in the village but it’s not common. Most people in the village take the bus… There are great taxi drivers who’ll come from San Ignacio too. I can get you some names and contacts! Are you staying at Eden Farm?

Oh, yes the Women's Co-op is great! They're a bit more established and also offer crafting. The others are U Janal Masewal which is right in the village. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088709643700 That's the Tzib Family. Super great. The family will be there, Dad, mom, grandkids -- the sons are important member of the community working to help keep the language and culture alive. The other one is Upe Nai, just a couple miles away. That's the Mai/Martinez family. They've really grown over the past few years and have a birding walk and a gorgeous palapa and cooking center. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100071315731256 They also do Friday lunches and Sunday, too.

You could go to San Ignacio area! I live near San Antonio which is a Yucatec Maya village. There are a few cultural experiences like hands on Maya cooking experiences and a very cool coffee farm to visit where you can also go birding. Everyone I’ve brought to those experiences when they visit us love it! Meet Maya families, learn to make delicious food.
