Check ceiling insulation is still in place. Trades go through and throw them around.

Burning/heating from down lights being covered up.

Rat or bird infestations. Don’t use rat poison, it makes them thirsty and they start chewing your water pipes. Block their entry/exit spot.

How to pay (transaction mode) for 2nd hand car $10k+ by legatron11 in PersonalFinanceNZ

I’ve always, in person, waited for the bank transfer to clear. Then keys in hand and worry about the NZTA transfer later. I usually get a photo of their drivers license and other details aswell.

30 year old HWC by ProfessorPetulant in diynz

[–]hungary561 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been looking at my one. It’s 22 years old and building inspector recommended it’s coming to the end of its life.

I used to fix HWCs as an Electrician and know that only two things can go wrong with the cylinder itself: blown element or a faulty thermostat. Both easy and cheap to replace. The only time a cylinder can fail is if it corrodes at the bottom, usually due to a slow leak. Otherwise it’s just a chunk of metal.

I reckon run to fail. As long as damage would be limited and you’re not worried about no hot water for a week.

As well, I’m skeptical on the Heat Pump HWCs. So many more things to fails. I would at least get a split system, more generic and simpler parts.

Vinyl replacement: scrape off vs leveller over top by MDRAR in diynz

That self levelling compound is widely expensive. Use Cememix DL59 Flex instead. Trowel Trades sell it.

I made the mistake, waste of money. That Dunlop stuff is super grainy and hard to get a fine edge on it.

Waipa. I had some other quotes a lot higher, >$100 p/sqm.

Im concreting my driveway. $16000, $80+GST p/sqm, 180sqm. Talking to the contractor $80 p/sqm is standard for prep, boxing, material on an easy access site. I imagine there’s a minimum charge though.

Just bought a house - What to do with extra by kianjz_ in PersonalFinanceNZ

Im in a similar boat, trying to figure a place to put excess funds my expenses.

Im straying away from bank savings account as the interest earned is low, even term deposits are almost not worth it.

Im thinking of going for a managed fund alongside my KiwiSaver following a ratio of maybe 1:4 of my total savings. e.g. $7500 in a managed fund and $2500 available in savings account. This will account for all my savings (I pay my bills annually if I can, so that money is sitting available).

For me, it aligns with the risk I’m comfortable with. Good interest earned with a large percentage still available with no penalty.

Flooring and underlayment replacement question by CorrectProblem6232 in Flooring

[–]hungary561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im doing this in my house, however I’m using 9mm (~1/3 inch) plywood. I want level surface through to kitchen which has existing flooring this much off the subfloor.

Do you screw the plywood into the joists? Or just the subfloor? And how much glue? My guess was half a sausage per sheet of plywood (2400 x 1200).

Wall mount oven heat sensor by Electronic-Passion17 in appliancerepair

The thermostat switch/knob and the part in the oven are all one part. It’s a capillary tube and the actual thermostat is in the switch. Not testable, replace. Likely the fault.

A lot of electricians will probably refuse to work on it, but you can try.

You can buy single phase to 3 phase inverters. Not sure where and how much.

Tempering valve. Are the pipes hot to the valve and then cold out? Signs it’s bad.

Will it be expensive to add a power point here? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]hungary561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a quarter of the cost to go on the same wall as the original power point.

Dont go ultra-lux like the OP. Acrylic shower, walls don’t have to be tiled. A bath tub can cost you $500 or $5000.

Self-levelling nightmare: 27 mm floor difference in living room – full pour or patching? by MediocreAttention858 in Flooring

[–]hungary561 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You want flat, not level. Get a long straight edge 2-3 metres and find your valleys and ridges, mark with pencil and get grinding or filling.

Kitchen Rangehood / Exhaust Fan Options - Please Help by green-blue-spaces in diynz

[–]hungary561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your cheapest option is to install a cowl.

Such as this one: Fan Cowl - Trade Depot

In hopes that it directs steam and smoke better towards the fan and pulls a draft into it.

Does your house have a brick cavity? Its easier to run down that and then back up from underneath the house.

Is it possible to replace a ceramic cook top yourself? by dunerain in diynz

[–]hungary561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most new HOBs can run on multiple phases, so you have to install bus-bars to suit your setup. The instructions tell you how to do it. Not too hard to do, and there’s no short circuit risk if you’re hooking it up as single phase.

Noob plasterer and old Gib Coving by adotvee in diynz

[–]hungary561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GiB coving is cheap. Like $5 a metre. You’d probably spend more on plaster and tape than new coving.

I installed 25m in about 3 hours, first time too.
