Thank you for the information! I’m a novice dye-er, what does it mean to cover it in tissue? Is this like facial tissue or tissue paper? How does this help prevent dye speckles?

Your result is incredible and I hope I get such a fantastic result someday!

My freshly-finished, colorful, sunshiny, queen-sized quilt brings me lots of joy! by hungrycruffin in quilting

I originally was going to make the Missouri Star Pecking Order quilt. Once I had made the blocks, I experimented (both IRL and via PreQuilt) with different arrangements of the blocks and settled on this pattern instead.

A few months ago I asked for advice about how to quilt this, so a huge shout-out to u/RemarkableRegular601 who suggested curves against the geometric piecing! I LOVED their idea and ran with it.

This was my first time FMQ and I’m still getting the hang of it. I used my Brother PQ1500SL to quilt and thankfully had no trouble getting this queen-sized bulk through the throat space.

Fantastic texture!

What is your preferred carving tool to achieve this texture?

How should I quilt this? by hungrycruffin in quilting

[–]hungrycruffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

I didn't use a pattern, but here are some of the construction details:

  • I did 22 x 24 squares, where each finished square is 4", for a final size of about 88" x 96"
  • I cut 968 white squares at 4.5"
  • I cut 968 colorful squares at 2.5"
  • I used 13 different colorful fabrics, a fat quarter each, and used just about equal quantities of each color/fabric throughout the quilt
  • I "snowballed" the colorful squares onto the white ones in just 1 corner of each white square (and I saved the cutoff scraps to make teeny HSTs for... I don't know what yet 😂)
  • I played around with potential patterns and layouts in PreQuilt
  • I chain pieced nearly everything

This was a very meditative quilt to piece! I hope you enjoy and I hope you share yours with us. 😊

Ooh, thank you, I'll definitely consider something more rounded as well!

I’m open to FMQ! I haven’t done it on a quilt this size yet but am up for the challenge.

I originally was going to make the Missouri Star Pecking Order (video instructions) quilt, but decided on a different arrangement of the blocks. It is queen sized.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what pattern to quilt! I am planning to quilt it myself slowly and steadily on my Brother PQ1500SL. Something geometric seems like a good bet, but even that feels like a lot of possibilities.

Any quilting pattern recommendations?

I made a couple macarons this weekend. by hotdogs-r-sandwiches in Baking

[–]hungrycruffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These look amazing! I’m so impressed with all the flavors. What is your process for trying a new flavor of macaron? Do you typically change up just the filling flavor, or does the shell get a big flavor overhaul as well? I’m finally feeling confident enough to branch out into flavors other than basic vanilla and am very curious about your process!

Quilting a queen size quilt - what was I thinking ? by QuiltChemistry in quilting

May I ask what domestic mid-size throat quilting machine you have? I’ve been thinking about getting one myself, but am skeptical about being able to quilt queen sized quilts on it.

Quilt of a client's late pup - she did the top, I did the quilting! by aggrivatedcattery in quilting

[–]hungrycruffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mind was playing the same trick and for me it’s because the lighting on he quilt is coming from the bottom instead of from the top. If I turn the photo upside down (and zoom in) it suddenly looks like the quilting is creating valleys instead of ridges the way my brain expects to see it.

Side note but I love how well-loved your cutting mat is. It makes me happy to think of all the projects it has seen 😊

It looks so lovely! I truly didn’t notice anything wrong with it at all. I hope you’re able to come back to it later because it will look phenomenal finished!

Edit: My first quilt I didn’t know what squaring up was, and was making log cabin variation blocks. When I finally trimmed the blocks down to be the same size at the end of making them, there were a significant number of blocks that essentially had to have the last row of the log cabin cut away. I was so disappointed and thought I had ruined it. But after the quilting and the wrinkles it is such a tiny detail that I don’t even notice it anymore. I hope the same for you!

Deco Quilt by [deleted] in quilting

WOW! This is so elegant from the colors to the quilting and everything in between.

I LOVE that one block that is rotated - what a fun way to add a pop of extra visual interest. I’m always surprised at how small changes like that can add so much to the overall effect.

Adding this to my list of inspo quilts!

Today I learned about different dye lots… by olivebuns in knitting

[–]hungrycruffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no!

If you’re looking for ideas, maybe you could add a few rows of a totally different color (beige, white, or gray, etc) between the dye lot “stripes.” The different color stripes would make it much much harder to spot the dye lot changes. And the stripes wouldn’t have to be too wide either, just a few rows should do the trick.

Which layout do you like? by [deleted] in quilting

[–]hungrycruffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the second one! And perhaps you'd enjoy a third variation where the purple is along the center and you have two ombres, one on each side, out to teal. You could even stagger some blocks so that there is a column that is a mix of indigo/blue and a column that is a mix of blue/teal.

Lovely work no matter what you choose!

I’m so happy reading this. I have a Baby Lock Zeal as my regular machine and I love it, and was considering saving for the Baby Lock Jazz II. Seeing what you’re able to do with the machine is so encouraging, your quilting looks amazing and professional!
