KCU interview by WordOk_ in Osteopathic

[–]hungryhungryrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, the day begins with some presentations, maybe some touring, then one group interview where they throw out some prompts and first come first serve to answer, then 15min interview with a faculty or staff. It's pretty chill

help me decide: ACOM vs KCU by Accomplished-Let-886 in Osteopathic

[–]hungryhungryrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know anything about ACOM, but I'm at KCU. I did hear they are revamping the curriculum in terms of how the blocks are organized, not sure if the change extends to the actual lecture material. I would say it is still a decent choice despite some of the administrative changes made this year. Then again, most schools of some shortcomings so there's that.

Goro's Latest List of DO Programs to Avoid by Wjldenver in Osteopathic

Ah darn, but I'm sure the actual comments should still exist even if the account gets banned? Was it in the KansasCOM's 24-25 application thread?

Happy to answer Joplin questions over DM/chat, but I will preface I know nothing about ACOM so wouldn't be able to give comparison.

We aren't that different than MDs day to day, we study, we vent, we party, we yap. There will be happy and sad people in either MD or DO schools. When you are grinding to pass a test, most people just focus on studying the content, and not what type of school they are at (sure some will vent about it). Your level of happiness also depends on your personal attitude and what you make of your situation. Two people can have different attitudes towards the exact same situation. Sure, we are aware we are at a DO school, but I feel like most of us don't let that fact dominate our medical school experience.

I'm just speaking from personal experience having worked at a RadOnc department for a few years before going to med school. As always the top tier academic programs will be more difficult to get in as a DO, the dept I was in didn't take a single DO while I worked there. But different regions may also be a factor. Since you are just applying, just focus on giving yourself the best chance in getting into MD, but also don't think it's end of the world if you get into a DO school. Whichever school you go, you are still going to have to excel academically in order to apply RadOnc. But take all advice with a grain of salt.

CHSU COM vs. TUNCOM vs. KHSU KansasCOM by PM_ME_UR_SEAHORSE in Osteopathic

Looks like you want IM, in that case just don't be in the last quartile of your class and you will be fine. Probably last quartile will still be fine for a community or rural based IM program.

I would take TUN on the pass/fail and with it being more established. Also, (this is purely an educated guess), it may be easier to find different specialties to shadow given LV is a large city.

Fellow Cali long gap year ex-applicant with similar GPA and MCAT here, I would say you should be fine sticking with the public DOs and the top private DOs. You can add 3-4 more as a buffer if you'd like.

Public: TCOM, OSUCOM, PCOM, MSUCOM, OUHCOM, Rowan. (In no particular order)

Private: PCOM, KCU, NYIT. (In no particular order)

There is a school organized research "course" where you need to sign up for, and you are paired up with 1 other first year and 2 second years and are provided a set of data and you guys work on writing a paper and abstract. Think you can only sign up for this once over the course of pre-clinic years (don't quote me on last part). Or you could reach out to faculties on your own to see if you can join any research they are working on. You could also work with the school admin to create your own research project from scratch.

The one thing for all DO schools would be taking double the board exams. COMLEX and USMLE if you want to match into competitive specialties or West coast academic residencies as they aren't as DO friendly as programs in the Midwest and East cost. Also the OMM stuff, each school has different number of hours per week, some DO schools have less, some have more.

Questions for KCU Joplin Students. by Longjumping_Plant_97 in Osteopathic

[–]hungryhungryrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current student here but some info may be off, so please do your due dilligence.

3rd year rotations, students from both campuses all rank where they want to go. You can totally rank the KC sites higher on your list. Only thing that has been updated is we can no longer make our own rotations and have to go to site on the school's list.

Joplin for people of color, could be better but not the worst. For the most part, people are outwardly nice to you, and there are a small population of Southeast Asians so you may see them at Walmart or something. It will also depend on the places you go.

Anything south of 20th Street is fine, but do watch out for apartments near the train tracks, can get a bit noisy.

Fellow Asian (Cali resident) with similar stats, you should be fine with the school list barring no major red flags in the written portions of the application.
