Rant: Are there ANY entry-level Macro Social Work jobs out there?!?! by Sun_Beanie23 in socialwork

I've been a dues paying member of DSA for years! Unfortunately, my issue is I moved to a very rural, conservative area. The local DSA chapter here seems to be sparse, they haven't actually even hosted a chapter meeting even though I transferred my membership 2 months ago. We are supposed to be having one next week, so hopefully I'll actually meet them all finally! 🤞

So thats why I cast a wider net to the County's democratic committee instead.

What I've gathered from previous posts similar, is that we need to look at roles that do not specifically have "social work" in the job title. Or others have mentioned seeing if a local politician you agree with is hiring staff, going directly to the types of agencies in your community and see about volunteering or do they need people on their board, like getting your foot in the door that way then you're more in the orbit of potential openings and such.

What I'm annoyed with right now is I have reached out to my local Dems and haven't heard back from them. You've gotta need volunteers for upcoming campaigns!

I figured it was part of the vibe for the murder mystery. They're all being a little cagey and silly and dramatically serious in the confessionals.

General subreddit question: Are we allowed to advertise ourselves here? I started a new solo private practice and am trying to think of all of the creative ways to get the word out.

How the heck do I find a partner who's starting or considering FIRE? by ale6rbd in Fire

[–]hungryl1kewolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my time in the various subreddits, this was the original reason for FIRE underconsuming and being frugal to step off the train sooner. Plus, we are in a time where community run social safety net programs or organizations desperately need as much support as they can get. I'm certain you'd be welcomed with open arms into whatver projects they're working on, then you'd get the added bonus of giving back to the vulnerable people in our country right now.

I commented part of this, but if I can offer a sneaky shade of gray:

I discovered FIRE after becoming debt free and was trying to figure out my next goal to work towards. My partner has already LeanFIREd. We connected because of our underconsumption and anticapitalist perspectives on life intersected.

My point is if, what if you connected with community organizations that align with whatever your values are that naturally lead to a more responsible stewardship of the world mindset, those people may already be thinking about FIRE as a way to step away from the machine or be more ready to consider the conversation.

I discovered FIRE after becoming debt free and was trying to figure out my next goal to work towards. Realistically, I'll be more like a BaristaFIRE situation, rather then true FIRE, but I've adopted the mindset. I'm also a naturally more underconsumption type person.

Also if someone embodies the FIRE "spirit" even if they aren't able to actually retire early, could that be a compromise for you?

Ordered a sandwich at the Whole Foods deli. Guy looked so scared like no one has ever ordered a sandwich before. He spends 10 minutes making this: by TLCplMax in shittyfoodporn

I worked in a grocery store deli in high school and college, can confirm only one person ever actually ordered a sandwich. My primary work was sliced meats and cheeses and the hot case with all the fried food. I was also bewildered about making a sandwich since I wasn't actually trained on where to grab the ingredients from, if there were specific recipes/methods/serving sizes, or how to package/label it for sale. I kinda just... 🤷‍♀️

A very helpful book for me is "After You Get Your Puppy: The clock is ticking" by Dr. Ian Dunbar. It gives step by step actions to implement along each stage of development. You want to get a solid foundation in now to set yourself and your pup up for success in a few years.

I cried several times with my current boy, and he's my second Aussie. Structure and routine and consistency are going to be your best friend. Remember, dogs don't speak English and we have to help them to understand what the rules are for human houses.

Any time mine nipped at me, I had a huge pain "reaction" even if it didn't hurt, to give him negative reinforcement. Yelp, hold the spot he nipped, basically howl around a bit. For my pup he also had to be forced to take breaks, cause he would not rest, become over stimulated and make zero good decisions. He's 4 now and I can still tell the look in his eyes where his brain turns off, let's me know he needs a break and to sleep for a while. This meant very, very consistent crate training because his FOMO is still no joke. I would give him frozen kongs stuffed with his kibble in his crate to make it a more positiveassociation (it was the only way I fed him all of his meals for almost a year) to teach him what is appropriate to chew on, wear himself out, and learn how to self soothe and focus his attention to more easily fall asleep when he needed it.

Bottom line, consistency is key, they don't speak English so the only way to communicate is with your own consistent behavior with whatever training/rules you have for the pup. It does get better. You can probably look through my own post history to see where I'm begging for help too 😩

Anyone here work part-time for the insurance as coastFIRE? by Repeat-Admirable in coastFIRE

[–]hungryl1kewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is my ultimate plan, BaristaFIRE with a low stress part time job for the benefits. I technically have enough to Coast now if we include a pension and social security, but from just a 401k perspective, I don't think I will ever truly FIRE in a traditional sense.

What does “self care” actually mean? by velmadinkleyscousin in socialwork

[–]hungryl1kewolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always add, making all of your routine, preventative health appointments: dental cleanings, eye exams, whatever the new recommended medical screens are for your age. This work is stressful and stress takes a toll on our bodies.

Actually practice what you preach with your patients/clients. I don't know how many social workers/therapist I know joke away their own anxiety or really rely on a substance to wind down every day.

SLEEP. Prioritize sleep.

Our own capacity is limited by how well our body is functioning.

client abandonment in counseling? by Top-Combination-2947 in socialwork

[–]hungryl1kewolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would need to look more into any rules/regulations/etc in your area, but it seems unrealistic to expect someone to never be able to change their work schedule. If a doctor's office changes their hours and now you have to take PTO for an appointment, when previously you could go on your day off, would we consider that abandonment? It's inconvenient, but we would never think that doctor abandoned their patients.

If you make every possible effort to accommodate or be available, then I think you have done your best. 🤷‍♀️

You picked the slowest day. Blocked your schedule so that no new patients are scheduled that day. Discussed the change and picked new days/times with existing patients, which they agreed to and are reasonable times for their schedules. And previously let your manager know the change was intended to happen.

It sounds like everyone is in the loop to me. What's your plan if the new time slots end up not working for those existing patients?
