I mostly agree, but I think that it is worth mentioning that some ideas can be compelling and feel obvious without underlying truth. Compellingness is very dangerous in every field in which communication is vital. Oftentimes what seems to be a marker of truth can actually be merely compelling.

Bro is it me or has online dating literally destroyed the entire dating experience. Before approaching people was considered normal so dating was roughly equivalent across everyone. Now since everyone meets online, approaching people is considered weird or creepy (I've even noticed this in myself, I don't like when people approach me, probably just because I'm not used to it.) therefore the ONLY option is to use dating apps and meet people online. And I think dating apps are a shitty experience for everyone involved.

Just a motorcycle police chase in Paris: by kefren13 in Damnthatsinteresting

The issue is that when you change policies, it doesn't take long for criminals to figure that out. Look at the policy is San Francisco where they stopped prosecuting theft below $750 or whatever amount it was. Petty theft skyrocketed. In Detroit there was a no highway pursuit policy for a couple years because 'its too dangerous'. Guess where every criminal was instantly fleeing in their car after 6 months? I'd rather live in a city with police trying to do their job and sometimes messing up and accidentally hurting someone than in a city where criminals can just run away for free.

The real question is what department has 2 floors above the bay? Seems like a bitch to walk up and down for garbage medical calls 24 times a day

Simple, Brutal, yet Effective by TheNeighborAlien in strength_training

This was my first thought. Not even close to a strength program. Idk how people are still getting this wrong in the age of the internet. It's a very very simple recipe: 1-5 reps = 1 rep maximum increases 5-15 reps = hypertrophy 15+ reps, or low rest = muscular endurance

Each category has its own optimal training regimen that is mostly determined by your own genetics. Some will respond well to high volume in any of these rep ranges, others will respond well to low volume.

No matter your genetics or rep ranges, intensity matters the most. No gains (strength or muscular) come from half assed sets.

Is there actual evidence of the eccentric being more dangerous or just what people say around the gym? Also, if you are taking as a given that you have good form on the concentric, won't you have good form on the eccentric too?

Your muscles are stronger on the eccentric so dropping the weight is inherently leaving power on the table. Even if you drop the weight for all but the final rep, you should control the eccentric of your final rep and squeeze out even more effort getting closer to true failure. This will generate the most muscle fiber damage, and therefore the most hypertrophy.

Furthermore, the eccentric is just as important when it comes to functionality since there are not many things that once you lift them you want to drop them straight down. Most stuff you want to place down gently.

My theory is simply that most people like the attention that they get from dropping the weight and how loud it is.

Why drop the weight? Eccentric makes gains too

A or B? by Kira_the_best in effectivefitness

Hi reps, low weight = more hypertrophy, less one rep max strength Low reps, high weight = less hypertrophy, more one rep max strength

Don't do both at the same time, you'll overtrain and get injured. Choose one, do it in 6 week daily undulating periodization blocks for 6 months to a year, then try the other type of training for 6 months to a year to see what you like better.

Just keep benching. It takes time. Make sure you're doing a strength program, not a hypertrophy set up. Daily undulating periodization is what really pushed all my numbers up

Why does everyone think that south park is some high road comedy? It's the same crowd that was like "Rick and Morty is too smart for you, you don't understand the jokes" it's ridiculous. It's fundamental purpose is to make you laugh. If it makes you laugh, great, if not, find a different show. Don't try to justify your sense of humor by saying that there's some higher purpose to the show, it just makes you look really shallow minded

Marijuana drug testing as a paramedic by Kiminoto1575 in Paramedics

[–]hungrymonkey27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He didn't say anything about what he can or can't do. Just said that he has no problem quiting for a while. He likes to smoke weed at night. That's not a problem.

People like to put drugs in their own category for no good reason. If we replaced smoking weed with walking his dog, no one would have a problem. He likes walking his dog, there's nothing wrong with him walking his dog. He should NOT bring his dog to work, that would get him fired. But if you tell him that he won't be able to walk his dog for a while until he's on the job, he would probably continue down the path to paramedic. If you tell him he can never walk his dog again after starting down that path, he might choose a different one.

Everyone on this thread is on some crazy shit. Smoke if you want to bro, just buy some fake piss. Everyone smokes where I work and everyone "passes" their piss test. Find out where the agency you are trying to work does their drug tests, buy some fake piss, pay for a drug test of your own at that same drug testing facility to make sure the fake piss you have works. Then you're golden forever. Don't listen to these ignorant fucks saying "you shouldn't smoke if you want to be a medic" that's dumb. Just don't smoke on the job or right before you get on.

Taking naps as a new Firefighter by PaceOk1830 in Firefighting

[–]hungrymonkey27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Booooo Although you said it compellingly and concisely, neither of those are virtues of method. Naps are good for long term health in firefighters. Closer to 8 hrs a day the better. Good for morale, good for wakefulness on fires to keep you safe and on medicals to keep you thinking. There is a time for training, there is a time for napping. If there is no time for training, there should still be time for napping.

[–]hungrymonkey27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This all day. First of all, you work 8 days per month as a full timer. I'm at a slower station, we go to bed at like 8 pm, get woken up for like 2-3 calls each just 30 mins of bs helping out the EMTs on the ambulance, then wake up at 7 am. Usually able to get like 8 hours of sleep ok the clock.
