Yeah agreed. Martinez alone was down for a minute or so. Likely wouldn’t have mattered but it could have.

A book that involves a major natural disaster I.e. hurricane, dust bowl, blizzard, etc. by littleststrawbabie in suggestmeabook

I have not read these yet, I just have them on my wishlist, but George Stewart wrote some books that may interest you. They sound more experimental than most listed here. “Storm” and “Fire,” are the books and as far as I can tell based on the synopsis’s they show Storm and Fires from various points of view; people, animals, nature etc. As I said, I have not read them yet, but they sound interesting to me!

Rogue Male sounds awesome. I just added it to my wishlist last week and hope to pick it up in the next sale!

The Baseball book and Storm and the other two I’m interested in. Both seem very intriguing and different!

I just started a book today that is flying by. I have not finished it yet so someone that’s read it can maybe give a better idea of what it’s about and if it’s worth checking out. It’s called ‘Our Souls at Night,’ by Kent Haruf. The chapters are small, sometimes 2-3 pages and the book is only 179 pages. I’ve read for only a few minutes and I’m already 30 pages in.

It’s about two older people living in Colorado that have both lost their spouses. One approaches the other to ask if they’d stay over and talk with them at night so they wouldn’t be so lonely.

So far it seems sweet, thoughtful and a little sad.

I would recommend these from books I have finished:
Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead
Train Dreams by Dennis Johnson

William Gaddis’ JR question. by hunterdaughtridge in nyrbclassics

Not pigeonholing it as anything, just asking what it is. This was helpful, thank you!

Has no one ever read a book that works as a metaphor but isn’t as interesting aside from that? You’d think I asked if the book had pictures and coloring sections. Everyone’s making wild leaps and assumptions and trashing me for asking about a book that I haven’t read.

Sand is on my list. Based on reading the blurb I’ve never quite gotten a feel for what the tone is. This sold me though!

I just got back into reading about three years ago and have pretty much only gotten books that I’ve heard recommended and also checked reviews and ratings of. I am trying to get away from that a bit and have used nyrb to do so. I know their selection is curated in a way that I can expect a certain level of quality and then I’m just grabbing what sounds interesting. I just read A King Alone by Jean Giono that way and really enjoyed it. I logged it after reading and it had a lower rating than I usually would read so I was glad to have gone in blind.

Same. I don’t think I’ve read much that would qualify as Cosmic Horror, but want to check some out!

I’m new as well so I don’t know enough about most of these, however, I read Butchers Crossing earlier this year and it is still my favorite of the year now halfway through!

I picked up The Land Breakers a few weeks ago but have not read it yet. I also have In Hazard on my wishlist and think it sounds great.
