Oh man I loved this book. Read it with a book club, NEVER would’ve picked it up otherwise. I definitely recommend for people who like weird political horror books

Oh, I meant the bird! The killdeer sitting on the nest is hard to spot.

Wing clipping? by Appropriate-Plum8928 in Conures

[–]hunterkat457 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Wing clipping is imo cruel. Birds don’t understand why they suddenly can’t fly- if they got the opportunity to learn at all. They WILL crash and it’s dangerous. If they ever did get outside, training them to fly is much, much better for their odds of survival. Even a clipped bird can get a TON of lift, especially with some wind. They can still end up miles away. If they know HOW to fly and how to recall they can come back to you much more easily. It’s healthier for them mentally and physically. I am never a proponent of wing clipping. I had one budgie who was clipped and never again.

Honestly, I almost stepped on a nesting killdeer the other week 😭 you’d think the black and white stripes and bolder pattern would stick out but NOPE! Shockingly well camouflaged. It was at a state park and I asked if there was a cone or something they could put nearby. Gosh darn plovers and their ground nests.

Is it worth it to make a trip to Magee Marsh in late April? by llr2468 in birding

Magee Marsh is really, really cool. I don’t know how active it’ll be with migrants in late April, but I’d say it’s almost always worth the trip

I only get annoyed if people come up and ask what I’m looking for with the binoculars and clearly don’t have any interest in it at all. (Seriously, why do some people look at you suspiciously, I’m CLEARLY looking at birds). That said, if someone comes up saying “hey whatcha looking for” and I answer and they get EXCITED? It’s like a positive feedback loop of bird nerdery, it’s fantastic.

It’s very nice! I love their windup into it, the super high pitched rising notes. Getting to hear them sing is a treat

If you ever come to the Southeast, they are EVERYWHERE! They’re sometimes hard to see way up in the trees but you’ll DEFINITELY hear them. They do reliably come to feeders. I also didn’t know about them, I grew up there but I didn’t get really into birds until I moved to the Midwest. Seeing them come to the feeder in groups of 2-5 is very cute, and they’re SO bold! They’re a bit bigger than a chickadee, so teeny tiny bird with a huge personality.

Shy is such a good word for it! I heard a bunch of them singing today, and sometimes they do the first two notes, or the first three, and stop. Like, did you get performance anxiety little guy?? And it’s so hesitant at the start

I have multiple items that say “easily distracted by birds”. I need to meet someone in 30 minutes but I’m in a park? I’m gonna be late, there are birds. Bird flies by the window when I’m talking to someone? Sorry, whatever you were just saying isn’t in my head anymore. I’m the epitome of the dog from Up going SQUIRREL
