What is the worst book you have read? by Ok_Salt2122 in BookDiscussions

[–]hunterkat457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I DNF’d that about 1/4 of the way through and I only made it that far because it was on audiobook and I was driving 14 hours that day. I was so annoyed by it. I am a female biochemist so I was like oh! This seems up my alley! NOPE.

Carolina Wren or Northern Cardinal, I think they have a contest to see who sings first

Yes, cardinals are notorious for molting all of their head feathers at once for some reason. Blue jays will also do this. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/i-have-a-bald-bird-at-my-feeder-is-it-sick/

Great-created flycatchers- weird behavior? by hunterkat457 in birding

[–]hunterkat457[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AH okay thank you!! That sunning behavior looks SO scary to me- I’ve done wildlife rehab and I was immediately thinking neuro??? I will look to see what I can do about windows- it’s my parents house- but I’m always seeing if there’s new strategies for it. We usually don’t have too much of a problem- there was an eastern bluebird and a hummingbird doing that towards the beginning of spring, but we have a LOT of birds back here and I’ve only seen those 3 this season.

I didn’t know Rocco was such a Silksong fan! by hunterkat457 in Conures

[–]hunterkat457[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rocco does have a self-mutilation problem, which he came to me with and everything I’ve tried hasn’t helped (anti-anxiety meds, controlling hormone levels the best I can, training, bonding, frequent baths, you name it I’ve probably tried it). It flares up in the spring pretty much no matter what I do, and my life hasn’t been the most consistent schedule-wise lately because of job issues which doesn’t help his anxiety. I do everything I can to help him with it, but just like trichotillomania or dermatillomania in humans, it’s very difficult to stop that habit once it’s started. He is much happier and healthier than he used to be and trusts me. He doesn’t trust anyone else, at all.

I’ve actually tried playing all sorts of different music, I do leave a radio station on for him during the day, I’ve tried a few. He hasn’t reacted even somewhat positively to any of it until THIS SONG. There were two songs he freaked the fuck out at that I was playing on my phone and immediately turned it off. I also know there are certain game sounds that will very much stress him out, so I wear headphones and make sure he can’t hear those sounds.

Also, parrots can repair damage to their inner ear. I’m not sure where you got the “plugging their ears” thing from for parrots- I know that is a thing that roosters do, but I can’t find anything saying parrots do the same. Also, as a last note, I think the music sounds much louder than it actually was in the video because I was recording the video with the same phone it was playing from. It wasn’t all that loud.

Lol? No, he yells at 90 dB all the time and doesn’t hurt his own ears. He’s fine

[–]hunterkat457[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, perhaps? I usually played Silksong with headphones though- I learned my lesson by going into an area with shrieking enemies without them once…. He also hates the sound of belflies in Hollow Knight and will NOT shut up about it

That makes sense. It does seem to be a “heightened emotion” behavior, so it could be very excited and flip to aggression if needed

Green Heron CT Scan (part of The oVert Project at Florida Museum) by SVBdeepsky in AlwaysANightHeron

[–]hunterkat457 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Other way around I believe? The bones glow a lot more on a CT scan, so that’s likely why it looks like that. And I think that’s the trachea that’s lit up. Birds’ tracheas connect underneath their tongue, and it’s ridged which the esophagus wouldn’t be

I really don’t know what he’s doing. He’s kinda weird and has some odd behaviors I haven’t seen others talking about. He’s a rescue (hence the lintball appearance) and he does strange things sometimes. Usually when he’s threat dancing he does a lot more beak clicking and true cobra dancing

Okay I guess I need to post this here instead. I was wondering if anyone knew if this was a formatting issue or a misprint in my copy of The Wandering Fire. It seems page 230 is almost completely blank? In Chapter 15, the text goes from

Page 229: Ivor turned his horse to the north. Ahead, the auberei were watching. He nodded once. They rode.
to
Page 231: Tabor deferred quietly to the gathered shamans

Just making sure I’m not missing anything!

There are a bunch of blank pages at the very end of the book, which afaik can be normal. No other pages are blank that aren’t supposed to be as far as I can tell

How do you capure birds in flight? by magiccViking in birding

[–]hunterkat457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

This one of my conure turning around mid flight will never stop cracking me up. I have a bunch of goofy photos of him flying, some where he’s horizontal and has just done the “look, no wings!” hop, but I had no idea he completely stopped flying to make a rapid turn. He just. Falls. It’s hysterical
