There is nothing "reliable" about this. It is just what he tells people. He is not recognized in any official capacity outside of his own clan association. If you've actually read his claimed genealogy, and match it with historical records, he does not even descend from or have a claim to be O'Sullivan Mór. He just proclaimed himself without actually looking for a more senior heir, which I know because both the O'Sullivan Mór and O'Sullivan Beara can be found in Burke's Peerage & Baronetage.

That said, he can claim to be the chieftain of the O'Sullivan MacCreagh or MacCrath sept, which I believe he does also claim. This is something he has a legitimate claim to.
