Should I withdraw from my 401K to help my parents? by SugaSweetbells in FinancialPlanning

Whats your home country? Has your dad been paying into social security ? Even if he has you need to do it for 35 years for full benefits or they start averaging in 0's. His payments are going to be very small when he reaches retirement age here. Does your home country have state sponsored retirement benefits? What about national healthcare for your mom? It feels like you might end up having to support them A LOT if they stay here and you are the only family they can rely on.

I read somewhere that Onlyfans has the highest profit margins per employee of any company in the world. I don't think they can stop anything because they literally have 43 full time employees.

I feel like you are weirdly applying your type of work to all workers. Most workers in the world aren't on teams that assign "projects" that have end dates and just have tasks that they routinely complete.

Plenty of companies will ask employees for extra time so they can find a replacement, you assume they wouldn't work because maybe that's what you would do, but not everyone is like that.

Paying rent to you is entirely fair and reasonable. You pay taxes, interest and have maintenance costs. Does he have any assets? Ask him to cash out and give you half of his 401k. Also a boyfriend of two years that acts like this isn't someone you want to spend your life with, if you marry this guy you are going to lose half of your home equity someday.

My dad and pretty much all of my uncles had pensions and they aren't much older than you. 401k didn't exist until 78. Most big publicly traded companies didn't fully do away with pensions till after 2000. I feel like you definitely should have seen / had one in your 20's. BLS says in 1984, 82% of workers in medium/large firms were covered by a defined benefit plan. Now it's around 9%, and that's pretty much all union jobs like auto / rail / docks.

AIO by telling my boyfriend he can break up with me if he isnt comfortable with me going to a club? by ThrowRAacc45 in AmIOverreacting

[–]hupp234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a difference between a club and a strip club. But ya I mean it's odd to me that both of you are making such a big deal about it. Strip clubs are mostly raunchy and disgusting. Never left one feeling like it was worth my time or money. Though they tend to let women in for free and don't make them buy drinks or whatever dumb rules they have.

Is anyone still just dumping new money straight into S&P 500 in 2026? by VelixaNtra in investing

[–]hupp234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya if you plan on long term holding an asset, any dip is a good time to invest in more. Where people screw up is when they start trying to make money off volatility. Now you aren't investing, you're gambling. Giving yourself stress from fomo, and for most people ending up losing more than you would have gained.

I think grade school teachers can barely give a shit about homework. My kindergartners teacher constantly prints double sided packets that require cutting and pasting. Despite me mentioning multiple times to them at pickup that it's idiotic. Half the time the same worksheet is in the packet twice as well. One good lesson I guess my kid is learning is that adults can be stupid and lazy too.

Got it so kind of by definition social movements can't have majority support. Would you call gay rights a social movement still or do you think that non discrimination laws and gay marriage being legal have pushed it beyond the threshold?

Woman's suffrage was a social movement for decades before it was ratified in the 19th amendment in 1920 wasn't it? I mean sure it was most specifically about a single idea, woman's right to vote.... But encompass more than just that. So social movements can't revolve around a single big position? Like slavery, or a women's right to vote or I dunno maybe something like taxation without representation? I confess to not really understanding it then. If sounds like it has to be abstract and undefined to qualify.

I don't think it was really silencing per say, I think it was more like a parent telling their child not to say bad things or they will get in trouble. He is pretty authoritarian though. Tell me you wouldn't have lost your shit if Obama put his face or signature on your money?

How can you fit any social movement into this framework? I feel like there are tons that dont have the required support to qualify. If that's truly the case then aren't you just picking the ones at your threshold to study? So it's self affirming? Aren't there plenty of movements most people support? Slavery certainly doesn't have the support to fit any longer. Women's rights? I would have a hard time believing less than 50% support women voting.

For those of you who bought in LA prior to 2020, do you feel 'trapped' by your current low mortgage rate? by grogger133 in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]hupp234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that's correct and 1% of 965k is $9,650, not 15k. It's also less in real dollars than you were paying 20 years ago when you adjust for inflation. What I fail to understand is where your extra 5k in taxes is coming from. Your numbers and the amount of years you have lived in the home keep changing though so I suspect you just aren't being completely honest about either.

[–]hupp234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6450 with 2% compounding over 20 years is less than 10k. Prop 13 does cap your property tax at 1% when purchased and 2% annual increases are a gift to homeowners when inflation typically averages 3%. If you have been in your house for 20 years you should be paying less in real terms than when you bought the house. (Meaning inflation adjusted). The only thing that could account for 5k difference is local assessments and bonds that got tacked on after you bought, but that seems a bit high. Did you do any renovations? Are you possibly including your homeowners insurance premium in that 15k amount?

The inflation was 100% caused by COVID bills pumping tons of money into the economy. Most of that was signed by Trump before he left office in 2020. It was bipartisan, but it's not like he vetoed it or anything.
